WFUV's Take Five

From 2010: During a stateside visit, the Welsh trio The Joy Formidable brought some of their good cheer to FUV's Studio A. They also spoke with host Kara Manning about their parent's record collections and the formidable Welsh indie scene.

From 2010: Guster is American alternative rock band that came out of Boston around the same time that Jonatha Brooke and Dar Williams were first playing open mics, but this group was drawing more from Phish and Widespread Panic than Pete Seeger. Their album 'Easy Wonderful' added some new instrumentation and a poppier feel, and the guys shared those new sounds live in Studio A during a visit with WFUV's Rita Houston.

From 2011: The Apache Relay met in Nashville and quickly hit the road, channeling the sounds of the band's hometown of Motown, and even Springsteen's 'Nebraska.' Hear the sounds of their album 'American Nomad' as host Alisa Ali welcomes the guys to FUV.

From 2010: The band Delta Spirit is not about being conventional or even 'marketable,' but they do love playing music with gritty rock and soul influences. Their sophomore album, 'History from Below,' brought them back to Studio A where they were itching to show off some new tunes and chat with FUV's Alisa Ali about making an album in an actual studio for the first time.

From 2012: Since the growing folk scene of mid-1960s Boston, Chris Smither has proven himself a master of modern acoustic blues. His twelfth album, 'Hundred Dollar Valentine,' is his first to feature only his own tunes, so Chris brought his guitar and his stomp board to FUV to play us a few of them and to chat with host Darren DeVivo.

From 2012: From its roots in Providence, Rhode Island and Montreal, Quebec, the quartet The Barr Brothers pays a visit to FUV to perform songs from its much-buzzed-about self-titled album in a Studio A session with host Alisa Ali.

From 2012: 'Synthetica' is the fifth full-length album from the Toronto-based band Metric.  After its release, the band stopped by Studio A to talk to The Alternate Side's Alisa Ali about the making of the new record and they also performed a few songs live.

From FUV's Alisa Ali, in 2012: 'I got to interview the band Tennis for their first album, 'Cape Dory' (which I still listen to and I suggest you check out if you are unfamiliar with it). They were typecast from that record as being too cutesy, and I know that really bothered them. I honestly was not sure that they'd continue making music, so I was really happy to see Alaina and Patrick again, and under such great circumstances too. Their album, 'Young and Old,' shows that they've really grown as musicians and it was great to reconnect with them. Also, they're such nice people that you can't help but like them - as you will see (or rather, hear).'

From 2011: Elbow is one of the most acclaimed rock bands in the UK, but the success was long-awaited and hard-earned. With their fifth album, 'Build A Rocket Boys!', the band continued to work on winning over U.S. music fans, and stopped by FUV to talk with host Kara Manning and perform live.

From 2010: After more than twenty years of success as the frontman and founder of the Scottish band Del Amitri, Justin Currie went solo with his 2007 album, 'What is Love For.' A few years later, he spoke with host Claudia Marshall at FUV about his follow-up, 'The Great War.'

From 2005: The history of Wilco seems to involve as much band drama as music, and back in 2005, frontman Jeff Tweedy set the record straight on which takes priority during a chat with host Claudia Marshall at FUV.

From 2011: Rhode Island band Deer Tick gives a nod to its hometown in the title of its album, 'Divine Providence,' but don't let the word 'divine' fool you — this is raw rock 'n' roll. Hear the band perform songs from the album during an FUV Live show at Electric Lady Studios, hosted by FUV's Alisa Ali.

From 2011: Sometimes one mic and two guitars is all you need... especially when the two musicians using them are Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. That's how the duo shared songs from Gillian's album, 'The Harrow & The Harvest,' during a return trip to Studio A and a conversation with FUV's Rita Houston.

From 2010: The Vermont-based indie folk trio Mountain Man is actually composed of three young women who combine sweet 3-part harmonies with traditionally-influenced songs to create a uniquely quiet and moving sound. FUV’s Rita Houston talked with Mountain Man, and they sang a few of their songs live in Studio A.    

From 2011: Personnel may have changed, but The Kooks survived quadruple-platinum success to continue their musical development. With the album 'Junk Of The Heart,' Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris from the band stopped by FUV for an acoustic set and a chat with host Kara Manning.
