We find it in businesses, our workplaces, and all around us. There is this pressure for everyone everywhere to capitulate to the feelings and beliefs of others. This is especially true when it comes to the issues of gender and sexuality. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell about how Christians should and can prepare to respond to these things. How can Christians respond lovingly even as some in authority over us attempt to force immorality upon us? What should Christians do when they are pressured and compelled to speak in ways that are not truthful? How should we react to these things? Pastor Caldwell reminds us that Christians are to be innocent as doves and shrewd as serpents, but in all things, convictional. As Christians, we made a choice when we received Christ. By the grace of God, through the gospel of God, we saw that Jesus is Lord and received Him as our Savior. As our Savior, King, and Lord – He is our ultimate authority. We follow Him, we submit to Him, we obey Him.

I’m considering selling it, but I’d like to know how and where the proceeds can be used to glorify God. Dr. Philpot asks if all of it should be given to the church. Can it be given to other organizations, or maybe to individuals who have needs? Should our giving be done anonymously, no matter where or to whom we give? He asks Dr. Richard Caldwell how should questions like these be answered. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, the Apostle Paul tells us that each should give as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. But as Christians, how can we know that what and where we give glorifies God?Pastor Caldwell begins with the specific question from the listener. He states that if you sell a piece of property that belongs to you, where you give the proceeds is really up to you. The biblical answer is that this is within the sphere of your own decision-making; it isn’t something someone can determine for you. All giving needs to be for the glory of God; it needs to be voluntary, it needs to be generous, and it needs to be wise. Dr. Caldwell says there's no doubt in the New Testament that the local church is the heartbeat of God at work in this world. So, regarding his own giving, he wants the priority to be the local church. Yet there are also other opportunities and places to give. Places such as Christian schools and colleges, para-church ministries, and organizations are worthy of giving to. There are pregnancy assistance centers and people in your life that may have needs.

Dr. Josh Philpot reminds Dr. Caldwell and listeners that we have previously dealt with the question of why God created the Devil. Because numerous Scriptures tell us that God created everything that exists, all that is and ever will be, we know God created Satan. And because God is omniscient, all-knowing, He knew that this spiritual being would rebel. Sometime after this, we also know that God created Adam and Eve in His image and gave them a beautiful home in Eden. God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. But then, somehow, Satan gains access to Adam and Eve. Why would God allow the Devil to enter this paradise garden after he rebelled? Why would He do this, knowing Satan would tempt Adam and Eve by using a crafty, shrewd creature, which God had also created? Why would God do that?Dr. Caldwell reminds us that there are things that God has revealed, and there are things that He has not. There are things that He has told us that He wants us to know, and there are things that we will never know. One of the greatest disciplines we will learn as Christians is to be content with what God has revealed. Taking the testimony of the Scriptures, we can say that God does everything for His glory - for His na...

Questions asked include: Where is the line of submission when a young woman is dating? Would submission look different for a young woman who lives at home compared to an older one who does not? When should the shift of submission transfer from a woman's father/parents to the man she is to marry? These questions presuppose a belief in submission of which the Bible speaks. But do we really understand submission and what it means? What the Bible says about women and submission is a hotly debated topic in our day and age. But much of it lacks proper biblical understanding and application. Dr. Caldwell seeks to guide us in our thinking as he answers these questions. His approach is as a pastor. But he is not only a pastor. He is a husband, a father of sons and a daughter, and a man who loves and submits to the Lord Jesus Christ.Dr. Caldwell first speaks of a proper understanding of submission in marriage. Marriage is a covenant relationship, a one flesh bond that has two roles, one of head and the other of helper. The husband is described as the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. Hence,

The question pertains to the part that speaks of the inerrancy of the Scriptures. Dr. Philpot reads the statement Founders has on the Scriptures and shares that it is because we believe the Word of God to be the final authority on all matters that is the issue. Dr. Philpot says this presupposes God’s Word is without error, hence the word – inerrant. He asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to share why he believes in inerrancy and where does he get this doctrine? Additionally, he asks for a few good resources that would be helpful for people who want to understand this better and be able to clearly articulate this well.Dr. Caldwell says the Doctrine of Inerrancy is accepted as a matter of faith; there is no way to prove it. At the end of the day, it is a matter of belief. But it is a belief that is firmly grounded. It is the Scriptures themselves that make the claim that the Bible is inerrant. Dr. Caldwell shares 2 Timothy 3:16-17, telling us that when it says inspired by God, the meaning is God-breathed. The Scriptures are breathed out by God. They are the product of God’s own activity. Adding to this passage, we have Psalm 19 and Psalm 119, where the truthfulness of Scripture is celebrated. Also, in these Psalms, we find the usefulness of the Scriptures revealed, along with their authority,

Dr. Philpot also says that Paul says in the book of Titus that unbelievers are not fit for any good work. But this sort of flies in the face of our experience and understanding. We can look around and see numerous unbelieving people who do some seemingly good deeds. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to help us understand this. How can we distinguish the works (good deeds) of unbelievers versus those that are the fruit of the Spirit done by true believers of Christ?Dr. Caldwell says that good works in believers are those wrought by God and explained by God. Good works are impossible apart from God and apart from salvation. We are all born into this world spiritually dead, sinners estranged from God. Therefore, the only abilities and capacities we humans have are those explained by our human nature since the fall. Dr. Caldwell says for something to be good, it has to be aimed at the glory of God, the honor of God; it needs to be something that pleases God. But as the book of Hebrews tells us, without faith,

Being a church that is word-centered finds its basis on a text of Scripture like that of 1 Timothy 3:15, which Dr. Philpot shares. When you think of an idol, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of small carved figures, statues, or images people bowed down before, worshipped, and sacrificed to in the Old Testament. But really, what is an idol, and what does it look like today in our 21st century? As Christians, how should we think about this, and how are we to remove idols from our lives if they aren’t these things? These questions and concerns will be addressed in this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast today between Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot. Listen in as Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell to share what idolatry is. If idolatry doesn't consist of just bowing, etc., before figures, images, and statues today, what is it, and how does it impact our relationship with God? Dr. Caldwell says idolatry is a matter of denying what God has revealed about Himself. We are not to worship the God of the Bible with images, figures, etc. To do so is to reduce what God has revealed about Himself to an image that comes from men's minds. It’s an image that derives from ourselves instead of from God. It’s a denial of God; it is a false god. That is what idols are. Why do men make idols?

It is the story of King David and Bathsheba, found in the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel, chapter 11. Dr. Philpot shares that there seems to be confusion about what actually took place in this account between David and Bathsheba. Did David rape Bathsheba? Did David overpower her and forcibly defile her? Or was Bathsheba a willing participant? Was their interaction one of mutual consent in this act of adultery? Who is truly at fault? How can we know what really happened in this narrative? These questions and more will be discussed and answered as Dr. Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell converse and carefully consider this passage of Scripture.A common error that often happens in Bible interpretation is eisegesis. This error consists of reading things into the text that aren’t actually there. The opposite of this is called exegesis. It is to read what is there and seek to explain it without adding to it. Dr. Caldwell says that we have to be very careful about this. We need to read the texts and let them say what they say. He believes what has happened in this case is that some are reading the Word of God through the eyes of our cultural moment. He is not saying there hasn’t been scholarly debate on some level for years and years. But he has never heard this take on it until recent times. He believes it has to do with what is going on in the culture ...

The Apostle Paul writes about the forgiveness of our sins in these verses. Paul explains that our trespasses have been canceled out by the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross. Dr. Philpot asks, Dr. Richard Caldwell if all our sins are canceled at the cross, and we have received complete forgiveness, why do we need to confess them? And, if all our sins are forgiven, why should we pursue holiness?Dr. Caldwell explains that we must make a distinction between judicial forgiveness and fatherly forgiveness. These distinctions are sometimes called positional forgiveness and relational or familial forgiveness. In judicial forgiveness, all past, present, and future sins, are fully forgiven as we embrace Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The death of Christ has answered for our sins. We are justified and declared right with God. We stand clothed before God in the perfect righteousness of Jesus. God now views us in this legal standing, and this is our position forever. But, says Dr. Caldwell, if we go to 1 John 1:5-10, what we find in reading through these verses as Dr. Caldwell does, is that there are three categories of people that John describes. First, there is the person who says they have never sinned. Second,

He asks him to share the process he goes through, where he begins, and how it takes shape. Dr. Caldwell shares that translating the text, a lexical study, and diagraming a passage are all part of preparing sermons. He undertakes a seven-step process where each step begins with the letter S. He shares one at a time and unpacks them as he moves along for clarity purposes. Seek it – First, you seek the truth. This step is the exegetical process; it’s reading the text taking note of the elements of the text, and paying attention to the definition of words and their syntactical relationship. See it – Second is to see it; by way of the first step. This step involves getting to the point of the meaning of the text.

Previously podcasts covered what a pastor does in his teaching and preaching role and how it is that a man is gifted and evaluated for the position of elder/pastor. This week their discussion will focus on the role of the pastor as shepherd. Dr. Caldwell has written a book titled Pastoral Preaching. In the book, he hones in on the role of the pastor as a shepherd, and he intently focuses on what the task of shepherding entails. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell to talk about this a bit and to help us understand why a pastor is a shepherd and what it communicates to the Church. Dr. Philpot has additional questions he asks throughout the dialogue. His last question for Dr. Caldwell pertains to losing touch with what a shepherd really is since many have never had experience with or seen the visual analogy of shepherding. Is this important? If so, how has it affected the Church and the Lord’s people?Dr. Caldwell shares the first reason this term is used is that Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is the Great Shepherd of the sheep. In the New Testament, the word we translate as pastor is the word for shepherd. Thus, when we speak of pastors as shepherds, it expresses biblical terminology. The terms elder, overseer, shepherd, and pastor are interchangeable terms for the men who lead the Church in the New Testament. Second,

Last week their discussion focused on the difference between preaching and teaching. This week Dr. Philpot mentions that Dr. Caldwell is formally and informally involved in training up a new generation of pastors. He asks Dr. Caldwell if he would share what goes into evaluating a potential pastor, and how does he know that a man is fit for the task and if the Lord has called him?Dr. Caldwell shares that it isn’t just him that does the investing in the men's lives. Founders Baptist Church is a campus for The Expositors Seminary, so all the elders have involvement and interaction with the men who attend here regularly. Which also provides one of the ways to evaluate men for ministry work. The local church is a place where men can receive mentoring by the leadership and pastors of that church; a place where they can grow and develop skills. It is a place where elders can watch over and guide with encouragement as they recognize evident giftedness in men that might pursue serving and working in ministry. As for looking for and evaluating men that might be gifted and called for the pastoral office, Dr. Caldwell says it begins with a desire. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 3 that the office of a pastor is a noble work, and the one who desires it desires a good thing. But desire alone isn’t enough. Dr. Caldwell shares that a man needs other things as well.
