Dr. Philpot reflects that it’s a significant time in the life of the Church as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. It’s an important time, a wonderful time, and a time of great joy of fellowship that happens within our church body and with our families. There are many different things we do to celebrate the birth of our Savior. At times, though, even for Christians, we can get caught up in the season and place our emphasis on the wrong things. Dr. Philpot asks about what we can do to keep Christ central during this time of year. He asks Dr. Caldwell to share how he has done this over the years. Dr. Caldwell says he will answer and share from his perspective. He doesn't believe that his views need to be that for everyone else. Thinking about this, Dr. Caldwell tells us that Romans 14:5 is on his mind.

How is a book like Leviticus profitable for a New Testament Christian? It’s a very challenging book to read and understand. The WSC defines adoption as an act of God’s free grace, whereby we are received into the number and have a right to all the privileges of the sons of God.” Where do we find adoption in the Bible? The concept of adoption is found throughout the Old Testament but not made clear until we come to the New Testament. In the New Testament, primarily through the writings of the Apostle Paul, we are introduced to adoption as the explanation of how God saved us and how we became part of His family. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell sits with Dr. Josh Philpot to candidly discuss how his family came to be through physical adoption and how physical adoption is a wonderful and beautiful picture of God choosing us and bringing us into His family through adoption. Dr. Philpot shares that after marrying, he and his wife Jennifer were planning to have children a couple of years down the road into the marriage. Around the same time they were discussing their family planning, they heard sermons from Ephesians 1 on adoption. Ephesians 1 teaches that God chose us before the foundation of the world and how, in His love, He predestined us for adoption as sons to the Father through Jesus Christ. Dr. Philpot shares that he had never thought of adoption in those terms as being God’s idea, God’s plan. Those sermons really impacted him and his wife so much that it occurred to them that they ought to consider adoption at the same time they were considering biological children. What ended up taking place, however, in God’s providence, was the opening of one door and the closing of the other.

Dr. Josh Philpot shares that 1 Peter 1 and 2 presents an extended section of the relationship between holiness and the reception of God’s Word. Within this same section, Peter quotes the command from the Old Testament, calling believers to be holy because God is holy. Peter talks about how obedience to the truth leads to a life of purity and love that comes from the living and enduring Word of God. He tells believers to long for the pure milk of the word that we need to grow in holiness. Dr. Philpot points out that James 1 also makes this same point saying that we are to be doers of the word and not hearers only. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell, how serious is this? If believers are to progress in the Christian life, what are we to do? Is there any one way that’s better than another? Today on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell seeks to answer these questions and more as he opens the Scriptures and guides us through some of these verses from 1 Peter.Dr. Caldwell tells us what we are talking about when speaking of this command to be holy is a call for us to continue along the pathway from which we started. Culture today is fast-paced in its ongoing absurdities, perversions, and insanities relating to masculinity and femininity. The culture has no idea what it means to live as a man and what it means to live as a woman. But we are also seeing where some professing believers may not either. Some professing believers, in the name of Christ, have responded to this confusing chaos with versions of masculinity and femininity that do not match the Scriptures. God tells us in His word that He made us in His image. He made us male and female, and in these God-given two genders, male and female, we are meant to give full expression to His image. How can Christians best arm themselves to stand firm on biblical masculinity and femininity? What are some things Christians need to be mindful and aware of as we fight against perversions of God’s design? Dr. Caldwell says that one thing we must be careful of doing in this, and in all realms, is to respond to legitimate spiritual problems with fleshly answers.  There is no doubt that biblical godly masculinity and femininity are under attack....

Today on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot shares that Ephesians 6 speaks about the responsibilities of children and parents in the Christian family. The instructions given in this passage are counter-cultural for today. Most do not see the importance of bringing up children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, let alone understand why it is that children are to honor their father and mother. As Christians, however, we ought to have a proper biblical understanding of Ephesians 6. It is a serious and sobering responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. What happens when we don’t do this is a breakdown in our families. Does this have an effect on society in any way? Or is it only our immediate family relationship that suffers? Dr. Philpot asks Dr.

Titus 2:1-5 envisions older members of the church influencing younger members. We read Paul telling Titus to speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. He shares instructions for Titus about what the older men and women in the church are to be and do so that the word of God will not be dishonored. These instructions include words such as teaching, encouraging, etc., meant for the older as they share with younger men and women. Psalm 145:4 declares, “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”. How can the people of God pursue this kind of ministry? What is required for this influence to occur in our churches? Is this meant to take place through discipleship or mentor relationships? What does this look like in the life of the church? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot will help us to think through this passage and guide us in its application. Dr. Caldwell confirms there is a focus in these verses on the Word of God regarding older men and women. Yet, most of what Paul describes regarding older people influencing younger people has to do with character.

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell has a question or two for Dr. Philpot, who would ordinarily be asking the questions. Dr. Caldwell states that Founders Baptist meets twice on Sundays, holding both a morning and an evening service with different messages. Why do they do that? How do churches determine how often they should meet? Is there specific criteria for determining this, and who makes those decisions? In addition to these questions, he also asks, how should we think about churches that don’t do church this same way? Dr. Caldwell asks Dr. Philpot to walk us through these questions, helping us to understand and reason biblically. Dr. Philpot explains that when the church began in Acts 2, the Apostles and disciples of the Lord Jesus began to meet on the first day of the week, which was Sunday. This was the day they chose to gather to meet and worship because it was the day Jesus rose from the dead. Saturday is no longer a day of rest for them, which was the Old Testament pattern; they are now under the Lordship of Christ.

In one sense, every Christian is a missionary in that we are to share the good news of Christ with others. But most of us will never leave our country of birth to do that as our full-time vocation. So how does someone become a missionary? Is being a missionary based solely on someone having a desire for that work? Or, is there a specific call to be a missionary that is separate or distinct from a call to ministry work? How would someone know if they are being called to be a full-time missionary?Dr. Caldwell answers these questions by presupposing that the person who has this desire probably already has had a call to ministry work. In that, they have already been serving faithfully in their local church. They are men well known by their elder body, meeting the qualifications for ministry, and have exhibited gifts for ministry work in the life of the church. (For further information on the call to ministry, watch our podcast on “How To Evaluate A Pastor” and listen to the sermons linked with it there)Dr. Caldwell says that when considering being a missionary, you want to have a mature perspective of missions work. Missions work is not easy, and the cost of the missionary lifestyle should be counted and assessed carefully. It should not be idealized to be easier than it really will be. There will be things in the mission field that you just do not know until ...

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot shares with Dr. Richard Caldwell that pressure and tension are rising in the culture. We find it in businesses, our workplaces, and all around us. There is this pressure for everyone everywhere to capitulate to the feelings and beliefs of others. This is especially true when it comes to the issues of gender and sexuality. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell about how Christians should and can prepare to respond to these things. How can Christians respond lovingly even as some in authority over us attempt to force immorality upon us? What should Christians do when they are pressured and compelled to speak in ways that are not truthful? How should we react to these things?  Pastor Caldwell reminds us that Christians are to be innocent as doves and shrewd as serpents, but in all things, convictional. As Christians, we made a choice when we received Christ. By the grace of God, through the gospel of God, we saw that Jesus is Lord and received Him as our Savior. As our Savior, King, and Lord – He is our ultimate authority. We follow Him, we submit to Him, we obey Him. We hold to convictions that are based on the Word of God. Whatever comes to challenge His authority, we yield to Him; we follow Him.  We do this imperfectly and often with trembling, knowing that obedience to Christ can bring slander, ridicule,
