Rachael Denhollander Speaks: Justice Matters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:30

Rachael Denhollander is a fierce light. That’s the first thing I thought after watching her testimony at the hearing against USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of molesting hundreds of girls over decades. Then, I got an early copy of her new book, “How Much is a Girl Worth?” and dug into the full story behind how Rachael became the face of the scandal that finally put Nassar behind bars. I watched the HBO documentary, “Heart of Gold” and listened to the podcast, “Believed.” I saw Rachael speak at the Indiana National Prayer Breakfast and then, I got the opportunity to interview her for today’s episode. Without Rachael’s courage and determination to see justice served for the hundreds of girls abused by Larry Nassar, the man may still be perpetrating abuse. As you’ll hear and read, she did it for the girls Nassar abused, but also for the whole the concept of justice as a whole and the girls to come who will suffer. It’s not just about USA Gymnastics, but about “community protectionism” that exists within all kinds of organizational structures — churches, governments, families. The concept of justice has often been buried beneath important ideas like forgiveness and grace. Those things are certainly important, but in this situation, Rachael had to squarely focus on justice in order to ensure it would be rightly served. Her thoughts on this deserver far wider broadcasting than this podcast can offer, but I hope you’ll take them to heart as you listen.  Surviving Infant Loss: Brooke Martin’s Beautiful Deliverance | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:20

Brooke Martin’s story captivated me after I saw it shared on social media months ago. She’s a local news anchor in Indianapolis, so many people are used to seeing Brooke’s face and hearing her cheerful voice on TV. Most of us were not prepared for the news she shared about her personal life, when she and her husband published a video talking about a fatal diagnosis for their unborn baby girl. Viewers watched the initial video and then followed Brooke’s pregnancy journey, as she continued working on TV nearing her due date. As you’ll hear in today’s episode, she already knew baby Emma wouldn’t survive long past birth, if at all. So how did she do it? How did Brooke share her journey so publicly, continue working and become a symbol of strength for so many women facing infant loss? “What’s happened to us — Emma Noelle — has  been my deliverance. She has taught me so much more than I could have ever learned without her.” I was honored to speak with Brooke so candidly about her experience, what it was like getting the diagnosis, walking through pregnancy and how she relied on God’s strength to get her through each day. After baby Emma was born, Brooke held a Celebration of Life for her, and invited families in the community had experienced infant loss to join her there. The stories that came from that event were heartbreaking and healing at the same time. This is a very hard thing to talk about, but Brooke’s beautiful spirit and her reliance on the Lord make it something worth hearing and sharing.  Run Your Own Race: Trisha Lopez-Davis on Overcoming the Trials of Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:57

Trisha Lopez-Davis has the warmest voice and it was an honor to invite her into my kitchen for today’s interview. She’s the co-founder of Hope City Church in Carmel, Indiana — and also a speaker, author, marriage ministry leader and mom of 5. In today’s interview, I speak with Trisha about her recent experience of adopting two children, after already raising three boys, and what it looks like to parent children of a different race who have seen a lot of trauma in their lives. We also talk about when Trisha and her husband, Justin, walked through infidelity in their marriage, causing their marriage and position as pastors to come to a screeching halt. How did they overcome? She tell us — and how they ultimately began a marriage ministry because of it. Her humility and perspective is so beautiful here. One of my favorite quotes from this interview: “Believe that if God has called something on your life — His love for you and belief in you isn’t circumstantial. If you try something and fail, it doesn’t change His love or perception of you. But try anyway.” Trisha also speaks to me about a time recently when she experienced debilitating depression — and how she dealt with it when she didn’t want to tell anyone that she actually reached the the point of suicidal thoughts. She had so many words of wisdom and truths about God’s presence in our lives to share. Though I recorded this weeks ago, I really cherished listening to it again and scooping up some of her advice once again. I know you will get that same feeling as you listen.  Pro-Life Feminism in Action: Destiny Herndon De La Rosa on the Border | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:44

Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa is so compelling to listen to. Get her started about being a pro-life feminist and you’ll just want to keep asking questions — so I did (which is why this interview is so long!) She’s not your average pro-lifer. The girl balks at political Parties (she’s an Independent), doesn’t go to church (“agnostic”) and is pro-life from wombxa to tomb — focusing on everyone from the most vulnerable unborn babies to men on death row to the men, women and children in detainment camps in the border right now. A few weeks ago, Destiny’s organization “New Wave Feminists” spearheaded an effort that brought together more than 50 pro-life groups to bring necessary personal hygiene and baby products to families being kept in detainment camps along the Southern borders. Widespread reports said families didn’t have enough diapers, toothbrushes, shampoo — and more. Pro-lifers made it clear they stand for all life — be it the unborn or the mom and her child trying to find a better life in the United States. Destiny is my favorite spokeswoman for the pro-life cause because she expertly articulates the reason we are struggling with it so much these days: Dehumanization is the root of every single societal ill that we have. Dehumanization breeds more dehumanization — and the only anecdote to that is to humanize others. Destiny and her friends brought over $100,000 worth of items to the border, delivering their load alongside the pro-life Catholic nuns taking care of people nearby. They had no help from Members of Congress (these happened to be Democrats, but we’ve no doubt it would have been bipartisan busy-ness) standing around nearby, too involved in their own press opportunities to help out. In this interview, we discuss what it means to be a pro-life feminist, to respect ALL life and how we can work towards a world where abortion is unnecessary and unthinkable.  No More Shame: Recovery Advocate Ryan Hampton is Changing the Face of Addiction | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:20

Ryan Hampton spent nearly a decade addicted to opioids. He also worked for the Clinton White House, had a good family and education. He wasn’t the type of person you might expect to become addicted to drugs. But what we’ve learned in the past few years is that addiction can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter your race, class, sexuality, background — addiction doesn’t discriminate and if you are wired for it, it’s nearly impossible to escape once it begins. But Ryan did escape. And he did far more than that — he has built up a powerful movement of recovery advocacy that attempts to remove the stigma and shame associated with addiction, and put a face of humanity back on victims. Only four years sober, Ryan has already written a a critically acclaimed book, “American Fix,” endorsed by President Bill Clinton, former Speaker Newt Gingrich and other well known figures across the political spectrum. Want to fix the drug problem? You can’t be partisan about it. Thankfully, finally it seems lawmakers across the board are coming together to combat this horrific epidemic — which killed 72,000 in 2017 alone. But, as Ryan shares in today’s episode, talk is cheap and not enough is being done yet. In addition to publishing his book, Ryan has massed a huge following on social media and implemented multiple advocacy programs urging victims and those in recovery to share their stories, vote and demand to be heard. I loved this graphic that Ryan shared: I was riveted by Ryan’s book and experience. As I mother two young children, I can’t help but worry about how they will navigate this world inhabited by drugs. I’m invested in advocating for better prevention methods, especially, but also for the many other layers involved in solving this crisis. In today’s interview, Ryan explains why addition is a disease, how he thinks we can overcome as a society and addresses some misconceptions even I had.  The Truth About Civility with Alexandra Hudson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:32

You know when you meet someone you were destined to be friends with? That’s how I felt upon meeting Alexandra Hudson — Lexi to her friends. She’s got a creative spirit I vibe with and is a writer after my own heart, spending her days focused on the lost art of civility, conversation, discourse and more. She’s writing a book on the subject, while at the same time writing and working for several other respectable places, landing plum fellowships and passing on her creative energy to anyone who crosses her path. Also, she’s published at places like The Wall Street Journal, the Hill, Quillette and many more. She went to the London School of Economics (wow!) and loves philosophy, the arts, world travel and jazz. She’s one of those people could talk with for hours about really important — or minute — topics and come away refreshed every time. Lexi has been a huge encouragement to me in the past few months and I knew I had to get her on the podcast to talk with me about her book, her life mission and why she knew working for the federal government wasn’t life-giving for a creative spirit so invested in making a real difference in the world. Not that government doesn’t do good things — they do — but having been there myself, I can tell you it stifles a person who needs to write and breathe and express themselves creatively.  Bethany Mandel: Spicy Taking and Baby Making | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:32

Bethany Mandel has been outspoken since I met her. She’s blunt, to the point and has a lot of strong opinions. She’s been able to make use of those as a freelance writer, publishing opinions on everything from vaccines to guns to privacy issues and more on impressive outlets like the New York Times, the Atlantic and the Washington Post. In today’s interview, we dig into the vaccine debate (she’s pro-vaxx) and a couple of other issues she’s written about. She also fights fiercely for North Korean refugees and is a crunchy momma who’s into things like natural births and she dabbles in free-range parenting. Shortly after our interview, Bethany gave birth to her fourth baby. It wasn’t quite as exciting as the third, who was born in a car on the side of the road (full story in this episode!) Bethany is always quick to help a friend and always seems up for doing things, even if it means packing up her whole crew and taking them on the road with her. That’s my kind of momma! She took a teary phone call from me weeks after the birth of my first child when I was struggling with breastfeeding — and offered up support and encouragement after hearing I was starting my journey as a stay-at-home mom. I’m still reaping the benefits of all the friends I made living in DC — and Bethany is one of those!  The Rise of a CNN Superstar: S.E. Cupp is Unfiltered | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:43

S.E. Cupp is one of those people who rarely lets things go to her head. We met years ago, back in the days when hardly anyone had Twitter but us silly folks in the political world. Over that time, S.E. Cupp has gone from an already accomplished writer (she was at the New York Times way back when and published her first book in 2008) to become one of the most familiar faces on network television. She’s co-hosted a few different shows on the CNN network, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that she picked up her own show, on their sister network, HLN. The show was so great, it was brought into the regular weekend CNN lineup. Now, she hosts “SE Cupp Unfiltered” on Saturday nights. She’s known as a moderate conservative who chose not to vote for President Trump and has no trouble pushing back where she finds the Right…in the wrong. “I love to find common ground. I love to find solutions to problems big and small. I don’t want to gather people — who sound and talk like me — in a room and yell at the camera for an hour. I want to be the sort of a place you can breathe and actually hear people and have a conversation and maybe learn something.”S.E. Cupp The girl is in her element on a debate panel and projects a confidence and intelligence I can only dream of. She’s charismatic as all get-out (would make an amazing politician, really) and is a grateful mother to one adorable 4-year-old, Jack. I was incredibly honored that she invited me on her show last year to discuss my book, “Leaving Cloud 9” — and she has always been the most kind, gracious person even as her name ID skyrocketed.  Charlotte Pence on Living a Gracious Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:04

Charlotte Pence has an attitude few can match. She’s kind, gracious and welcomes the criticism her family has dealt with serving in public life. She’s managed to find a beautiful balance between her personal life as a screenwriter and author and playing the role of Second Daughter, the middle child of Vice-President Mike Pence. In her first non-fiction book, “Where You Go: Life Lessons From My Father,” Charlotte reveals her life story and a peek behind the scenes into the Pence family. She talks with me about her Dad’s encouragement to pursue her dreams and his ability to put his family first despite everything his job comes with. “He will answer the phone if one of us is calling him, no matter what meeting he’s in or whoever he is with,” said Charlotte. It was refreshing to hear about the way a family that is so public stays healthy mentally. The Vice-President previously served as governor of Indiana and was a Congressman for many years as well, so Charlotte has grown up in the spotlight a bit, but it’s clear her father has always ensured their family was never sacrificed for his political career. I was curious how she handled some fo the criticism thrown at her Dad — and how he manages to remain so even-keeled, never uttering an upset word. “Watching my dad treat others with kindness and grace even when they aren’t treating him that way has been really influential to me,” she said. In this interview, we also talk about Charlotte’s unexpected conversation with Hillary Clinton on Inauguration Day 2017, the kind words Michelle Obama imparted to her — and what it was like visiting some of the most rural areas of the campaign trail throughout 2016. On 2016: “There was a level of enthusiasm for that ticket that I’ve never seen in public life. We went to more rural areas of America and would see people lining up, waiting for us, making signs, people were excited about someone who wasn’t from Washington, DC . People just wanted something different. I’m not a political mind but from the people I met and saw, most were people who had never been involved in politics before. One lady said her father had never voted in an election, but he was going to vote for Donald Trump…[but] he passed away before the election, so their family came out to vote for him.” On meeting President Trump: “He was very gracious and kind…he made time in his schedule to meet with me and have breakfast with my parents and I and get to know us. It was important to us, me being the only sibling available to be there to kind of give my opinion and my advice about it. I was able to meeting the siblings eventually and spent a lot of time with them on the campaign trail. It was cool to see their family interact in such a kind and meaningful way. They are ver supportive of each other and since we are so supportive of each other, it was cool to see.” On meeting Hillary Clinton: “It was cool to see her, right on Inauguration Day….it was probably a weird day for her and she was there and she was really kind. She took time to talk to us and talk to us about what we were doing, talking about school and what I studied. It was very meaningful to me to see that…at the end of the day people are just people and she definitely understands what its like to have a kid in politics and raise a family [that way]. It was very interesting for me — and also fun to see people coming together, and not just being partisan.

Homesteading Mama: Whitney Athayde on Natural, Home Births & Farm Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:16

Whitney Athayde dreams of eating and living fully off her farm, where she’s raising three kids (and about to give birth to her fourth ) — and her lifestyle is fascinating. In today’s conversation, Whitney and I chat about homesteading (which she defines!), natural, home births, why she ultimately chose to live organically and how caring for the earth and her kids is how she lives out her faith. Whitney says: “My husband and I both pray every day to be good stewards of the land, the children and the resources given to us. This is how we personally have chosen to glorify God…to show we are going to take really good care of this little corner of the earth we have been given and these children we have been giving. Stewarding is a really important part of my faith — being intention in general.” We also dive into a conversation about grief and how Whitney processed the tragic death of her mother, who she was extremely close to. I was impressed and inspired by some of the resources and thoughts she mentioned. If you’ve ever had to deal with grief — and you certainly will if you haven’t — you’ll want to hear what she has to say. She mentions in this episode: “We’re called to grieve to differently and we have a hope and joy that will come for us.” I respect Whitney’s beautiful approach to life and how she has shifted to ensure she’s living in a way that makes her proud and respects the foundational principles she holds as a human being. She’s eating eggs from her own backyard, cleaning with Thieves oil, trying her hand at bee-keeping and spending her days growing these amazing human beings — and you’re gonna love her personality to boot.  Escaping a Cult: Anna LeBaron is The Polygamist’s Daughter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:05

Anna LeBaron is an incredible woman. She grew up the daughter of polygamous cult leader, Ervil LeBaron. She has dozens of siblings and lived through heartbreaking trauma and abuse as a child. Even after escaping the cult at the age of 13, Anna went through even more horrific circumstances no child should ever have to experience. In today’s podcast episode, Anna recounts some of the stories from her past, drawing on her book, “The Polygamist’s Daughter.” I read the book cover to cover — and it was riveting and well-written. I was honored Anna took the time to speak with me today. She is a warm and friendly soul — and quite the book worm like myself. Anna says: Your parents are going to do the best job they can. My mom did the best job she could with what she had. Forgiving and letting go of some of those grievances is so important…that frees you. I met Anna last year when she led my book launch team. In fact, she is a professional book launcher these days, having led teams for Jen Hatmaker, Bob Goff and most recently, the best selling “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. Pretty impressive stuff! I love following her on social media, where she exhibits positive vibes and plenty of social media marketing wisdom. Oh yeah — and she loves CrossFit! — and of course we talked about that in this episode as well.  Anna proves the resilience of the human spirit and the power of redemption through faith in Christ. She’s now a Christian who has worked through the issues of her origin family, and she has shown that there is life after even the worst of trauma.  What We Talked About:  • The Polygamist’s Daughter by Anna LeBaron • The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner • Other Books: For the Love, Girl Wash Your Face, Love Does, Own Your Everyday, Grateful American •

Coming at you today with a pop-up episode with my friend Billy Hallowell. He’s the author of three books, a podcast host and Director of Communications at Pure Flix, a family friendly movie, TV and documentary film company. Billy and I thought we’d take our mutual love of faith and politics and bring it to you in podcast form today. We are both conservatives who struggle with Trumpism sometimes dominating the Right side of the aisle — and in today’s episode, we talk about that divide. We also talk about “Unplanned,” a movie Pure Flix produced about the life of former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson — and the impact the movie has had nationwide. It wouldn’t be a complete convo without some book talk. We discuss our books and how we have dealt with some of the disappointment that can come with being a writer, even with a big accomplishment like that under your belt. This is the most freely I’ve ever really talked politics (at least in audio form), so you can get a peek at what I *really* think, ha ha. Thanks for tuning in!
