Food as a Coping Mechanism | Feel Amazing in your Body | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2246

Amanda Walker's mission is to empower women (mostly mother's) to have the confidence to love, trust and feel amazing in their bodies. So many women use food as a coping mechanism and they have no idea they are. I teach women to empower themselves by overcoming limiting beliefs and truly reconnecting to their bodies. She loves to talk about the power of putting yourself first so it bleeds into all areas of life. How confidence in self and digging into the root cause of a poor relationship with food and self help create long term change. The mother/daughter relationship is so powerful to create a future for our daughters.  Not Just a Princess | Smashing Gender Bias | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3056

Jennifer tolls lives in Oxfordshire in the UK with her husband Ed, their daughter Rosie and dog Leo. She started Not Just a Princess when her eyes opened to gender stereotyping for babies and children. She wanted to create a business that addressed that imbalance. Rosie her daughter has a dinner plate set with a fairy princess on it. Over breakfast one morning, she wondered why she didn’t have a plate with a scientist, surgeon or plumber on it. Research showed Jennifer that those visuals don’t exist in mainstream merchandise, and if they do, they usually show a man doing the job. Next came the clothing. It’s all too easy to find messages like “When I grow up I want to be a mermaid” or “Princess” – but what about an architect, or a doctor? Messaging on girls’ clothing needs to be directly challenged and that’s what they are doing with their Not Just A Princess (NJAP) merchandise. Jennifer aims to expand their range with more aspirational messages, characters, careers and symbols that challenge gender stereotyping. Jennifer wants her daughter to know that when she grows up, her gender won’t impact her career choice. More importantly, She wants her to understand that she doesn't have to be ‘cute’ or ‘sweet’ – she can be brave and ambitious.  Not Just A Princess is about raising the profiles of women who are already #notjustaprincess - they are pilots, firefighters, surgeons and often mothers too. They hope that girls, boys, parents and society understand that there are plenty of alternatives to being a pretty pink princess.

 Exploring Emotional Intelligence a How-to approach | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1222

The concept of Emotional Intelligence is one that we talk about a lot over here at Raising a Powerful Girl and our new platform for girls the Empowered Girl App. I thought today I would do a quick podcast geared to parents of boys and girls on what emotional intelligence is, the importance and how you can foster it in your home! With rates of anxiety, depression and even suicide rising for children these days a huge contributing factor is that children do not have the coping skills they need to manage the situations that arise in life and instead are left with these emotions bubbling and boiling inside of them with no way of being processed which can either lead to making poor choices as a reaction to the behavior or the child retreats, feeling “abnormal” or that there is “something wrong” with them leading to isolation. But before we can even tackle giving children coping skills to manage stress and anxiety we need to start at the beginning and this is Emotional Intelligence.

The power of really good questions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2466

We all have a set of default questions we ask - "how are you" or "what do you do" or "how was school" - and it's important to realize that the questions we ask shape the answers we get. On top of that, we need to teach girls that relationships are a cornerstone of their happiness, and that they're responsible for helping to nurture these relationships. If we want to raise happier, stronger, more authentically connected girls, we need to, first, make them aware that lots of default questions get very superficial answers, and second, encourage them to ask more meaningful questions that lead to conversations that they can build relationships on.Sara Blanchard helps communities build connection through conscious conversations. As a writer, facilitator, TEDx speaker, and happiness consultant, Sara holds a safe space for a loosely associated group to connect authentically. Having worked at Goldman Sachs and taught positive psychology at Harvard, she speaks the language of traditional accomplishment, but for over 10 years, Sara has also pursued the science and techniques of well-being as a life coach, mother, and author of Flex Mom. She now bridges the gap between the serious mission of supporting success, and the lighthearted yet impactful actions that build quality relationships, meaning, and happiness in our lives.
