This is the second episode in our Psychology of the Characterization series. Our premise is that the three leads of the sequel trilogy: Rey, Kylo, and Finn, share the same core conflict which develops in different ways because of their individual character traits, life situations/environments. In this episode we focus on Finn's struggle with childhood trauma, the loss of his identity and his successful use of mature defense mechanisms to form healthy relationships and find a sense of purpose. While we appreciate the elegant resolution of some of Finn's conflict in The Last Jedi, we feel that overall his character has been underwritten and hope for further development of his arc in Episode IX. In this episode, Lee and Denise analyse why Kylo can be considered the protagonist of The Last Jedi. We look at his arc in Episode VIII, how he is a central point where the plots converge, and how Kylo is central to both climaxes of the movie: in the Supremacy with Snoke, and in Crait with Luke. We analyse Rey's arc, and how a lot of it was about Kylo, which can be seen as a problem, but on the other hand, had great Reylo moments. We also talk about Luke's arc, and how it was shaped based on the needs of the plot, and about Snoke. Finally, we analyse the set up for Episode IX, Ben's redemption, and Reylo. We hope this analysis will provide a deeper insight into these characterizations, and believe the shared conflict informs their character arcs up until now and through episode IX. In this episode we focus on Kylo; we talk about his personality structure and relationships with his parents, Rey, Luke, and Snoke. We talk about trauma, narcissistic traits and other psychological traits that can be seen in the character, and what it means for the Sequel Trilogy, for Reylo and for Star Wars Episode IX. Lee's focus is primarily on the psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut and his work in Self Psychology, but other prominent analysts and theories make an appearance.
