Starting his film career with 1977's Pete's Dragon, Don Hahn began a path that would lead to producing the first ever animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards in Beauty and the Beast.  He then produced such films as The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, DisneyNature's Chimpanzees, African Cats, Waking Sleeping Beauty and the upcoming documentary Howard which tells the story of songwriter Howard Ashman.  We are thrilled to have him join us on the show to discuss all of that and more including his latest book, Yesterday's Tomorrow : Disney's Magical Mid-Century.   Support us by becoming a DMH Crew Member at our Patreon page HERE! On November 3rd 1977, PETE'S DRAGON was released and since then has stayed in the hearts of many Disney fans.  On this week's episode we dive into the production history of the film including where the story came from, the director, the animation team and more.  Following that we review the film itself and ask our three questions.  One, does the film have a moral/emotional aim and does it accomplish it?  Two, what is the iconic shot of the film?  Three, does the film hold up?  Let's go! The Disney Magic Hour Book Club visits another classic novel that was later adapted into an animated film by Walt Disney in J.M Barrie's Peter Pan.  The book is also listed as Peter and Wendy AND Peter Pan and Wendy.  This work was first shown as a play in 1904 and then released as a novel in 1911.  The book is considerably darker in tone than the animated classic film but does that aid it?  How does the work hold up today?  Melyssa and Courtney will break it all down in this week's bonus episode!  Support us by becoming a DMH Crew Member at our Patreon page HERE! Beginning in 1952 as an inbetweener on Peter Pan for the Animation department of Walt Disney Studios. He would go on to work as an assistant animator on films such as Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians. Starting in 1959 he would become a vital piece of the WED Enterprises team, helping design such iconic attractions as It’s A Small World, The Haunted Mansion, The Enchanted Tiki Room, and the Tower of the Four Winds as it was featured in the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 2004 he was named a Disney Legend as an Imagineer and in April of 2009 his name was dedicated to one of the windows on Main Street USA as the proprietor of Fargo’s Palm Parlor, Roland F Crump.
