Beyond The Badge: The Philadelphia Starbucks Controversy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:34

Last week, two black men were arrested in Philadelphia after being told to leave because they had not purchased anything and were loitering. Starbucks’ policy, as is the case with many companies, states that in order to use their restrooms or to hang out inside the store, a purchase must be made. That said, social media is in an uproar because it’s become a racial issue so much so the CEO of Starbucks has had to make a public apology and will close stores for half a day in May to go over store policies and race relations company wide. On this episode of Beyond The Badge, Vincent Hill explains why this is anything but a race issue, why the police supervisor who was called in (who was also black) did the right thing by standing by his officers, what would have prevented the episode, and why he thinks this entire thing is politically motivated. This week, Law Enforcement and Security Analyst Vincent Hill discusses the Stephon Clark police shooting death in Sacramento, CA and he explains why the shooting was justified. If you aren’t familiar with the case, Clark was shot 20 times by officers in Sacramento, CA Sunday night because officers believed he was carrying a gun. In reality, Clark was only carrying his cell phone. Then, the latest news from Baton Rouge where Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced he will not seek charges against Officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake in the shooting death of Alton Sterling in 2016. In July 2016, Officers Salamoni and Lake were called to a convenient store to confront Alton Sterling, who had a firearm that was hidden in one of his pockets. Sterling didn’t comply with the officers and a struggle ensued after Sterling had been tased. After the taser showed no effect, the officers pulled their guns and things quickly escalated leading to Sterling being shot and killed.
