 #291 - Mastering 40, Ep. 7 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4370

The new Mastering 40 episode is out and we break down the first four months and what the next season of the journey has in store. First, coach James McKirdy explains how he was framing the fall season, the primary focus of that time, how my relative fitness level matters (and doesn't), and TONS of treadmill tips. In the second half of the episode, Adrienne Langelier, my sport psychologist, and I talk through talk through many of the things I discussed with James but from a psychological point of view. Per usual, I open up and share all the things that I've been thinking about including how I can make my kids new distance learning work with running, coaching, and podcasting.  #290 - Leah Jantzen - Mental Training to Reach Your Goals | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3459

Leah Jantzen is a self-help author, speaker, triathlete and performance coach living on Long Island. Leah is a firm believer in the infinite potential residing in every one of us, and has dedicated her life to helping others realize it. The creator of Train Your Brain—a system for boosting mental fitness—Leah instructs her clients to clearly see an athletic goal in their mind, then guides them through the process of training their bodies to achieve that goal, utilizing the same principles she used to build a successful business. “At any given time, two of these facets of the self are prioritized while the third takes a back seat,” Leah explains. “For most of us, those are the family and career facets. That’s normal, but if you’re going to find balance and pursue the third facet with all your dreams and goals, then you need tools to block out distractions—to weed out anything non-essential in your life.” The discipline and mental toughness required to root out trivial nonsense can be developed—if you know how to train your mind. Proving the maxim that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, Leah ran her first marathon at the age of 42. Upon crossing the finish line, the mother of four was immediately hooked, spring-boarding from one marathon to the next, and going on to compete in triathlons. After consistently finishing in the top 2% of her age group, she ultimately qualified for the Iron Man World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2020, an unthinkable feat just a few short years ago. “If you can combine visualization, action, and positivity, then there’s really nothing that’s off-limits,” says Leah. “But even as a long-time believer in this principle, I subconsciously allowed self-limiting beliefs to creep into my psyche. Identifying those beliefs, figuring out why they were there, and then proving them to be untrue is one of the most immensely satisfying experiences of my life. Everyone has these limiting beliefs, and I want everyone whose life I touch to experience that same incredible feeling of overcoming them—and realizing that they’re capable of anything.” Learn more about Leah at www.leahjantzen.com.  #289 - Lisa Mueller: H.S. XC Drop-Out to 2:57 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4219

It was an honor to speak with the wonderous Lisa Mueller for this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast.  A year ago she listened to Mary Johnson and Lauren Floris detail their "Project: Breaking 3" women's program in episode 199. It inspired her to chase her own sub-3 goal. But, she was a bit unsure as the women in that program had already run close to 3:00, making her wonder whether a bigger improvement was possible. Lisa is a 35 years old political science professor at Macalester College. One of the best liberal arts colleges in America. Before she got seriously into sports she was a champion debater. A few years later Lisa "flunked out" of cross country in both high school and college, due to crippling race anxiety and toxic teams that fueled depression and eating disorders. A male coach told her when she quit that "running just isn't for everyone." She then made it my mission to show him! Lisa switched from running to bike racing in grad school and found a fun and supportive community. She broke too many bones and moved from California to snowy Minnesota, prompting her return to running. After swearing that she'd never run a marathon she fell into a marathon-centered club in the Twin Cities and caught the bug. Lisa proceeded to run three marathons between 2018 and now (3:24, 3:14, 2:57). Going from being an cyclist to being a runner was her biggest challenge . It turns out running was way more complicated than just putting one foot in front of another! A stress fracture last year taught her the importance of form. Since then, she has gone all-in on form analysis, drills, mobility, etc. Her philosophy is to train like a pro, just a bit slower.  #288 - Stefanie Flippin: From Last-to-First in a 100 Mile Race in 5 Years | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4185

In 2013, Stefanie Flippin ran her first ultra. She didn't make the last cut-off and was pulled from the course with 6 miles to go. She cried herself to sleep that night and vowed to never be so unprepared for anything again. In 2015, she whined her way through my first 100 miler, begging her husband and parents to just let her drop. She came in DFL (dead f'ing last) but learned at the finish why no one would allow her to give up. During those years and beyond she watched in awe as the frontrunners racked fast times and staying so mentally tough and focused for hours on end. Stefanie fell short over and over and didn't think she could every succeed at that level. Then, five years after her first ultra, Stefanie lined up with nine men on the Tunnel Hill 100 start line for the first wave, thinking "who do I think I am?" But after years of doubting herself, she knew exactly who she is now and that has made all the difference. How did she do? 1st female/7th overall. 3rd fastest female all-time on the course. 3rd fastest female 100 mile in the U.S. this year. An 11 hour and 39 minute PR and her 5th 100 mile finish - 15:55:06 (9:33 min/mi pace).  Sponsors: Previnex is a supplement brand that I trust, use, and have greatly benefited from.  #287 - Elysha Omoomy: Positivity Personified | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4281

Elysha Omoomy is back, she was also featured in episode 126, after yet another paradigm shifting performance.  I was going to write-up shownotes, per usual, for this show but decided to simply copy and past Elysha's Instagram post from November 16 because it hits her positivity, relentlessness, and dedication on the head: "From 5:21 12:17/mi to 3:04 7:03/mi, my message to you: NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS! I’m no different than you. I learned how to run back in 2010 and kept at it. It was so hard! But little by little, I improved and eventually learned how to dig deep and push past the discomfort. This is something I am still learning to do as I’m getting “faster” in paces. But you know what, I BELIEVE IN YOU! Now it’s time for YOU to BELIEVE YOU ARE WORTHY OF IT ALL!"  #285 - Mastering 40, Ep. 6 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4286

The new Mastering 40 episode is here and it details my wildest week yet. Last weekend I was able make up for my 10k DNF six weeks ago with a strong effort. In fact, the final 5k was faster than the 5k I ran three weeks ago. Yes! Then, mere hours later I was hobbled by an ankle injury. First coach James McKirdy breaks down 10k, the differences between racing scared or confident, and how the injury could dovetail nicely with a planned decompression in the training schedule.  In the second half of the episode, Adrienne Langelier, my sport psychologist and I talk through talk through the weekend. First we discuss pre-race anxiety and race execution. Then, Adrienne helps me setup a plan mentally work through recovering from the injury while also working full-time with my two kids who will be full-time distance learning for the next few weeks.  #284 - Molly Gutt: Champion Fighter to Endurance Athlete | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3828

Molly Gutt has one of the most unique athletic backgrounds that we've ever had on the show. Cheerleading and gymnastics as a teenager gave way to aerobic kickboxing in her 20's. From there, she was eager to test herself against other fighters and moved to Muay Thai - a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. A short time later, Molly proved herself as one of the best around. She is two-time national amateur Muay Thai Champion at 112 lbs. and 119 lbs.  During her Muay Thai training Molly was introduced to running. At first it was simply a way to gain aerobic fitness. After yet another injury, Molly began to full in love with endurance sport. Running is a far cry from the explosive sports that populate Molly's past. Yet, she has found a deep affection for the sport and now looks to continue striving for PR's and greater distances. You can follow Molly at www.instagram.com/mmarieg6.  #281 - Danielle Turk-Bly | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 5259

In this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast we are joined by the wonderful Danielle Turk-Bly. It was an honor to have Danielle on the show as she is a 2:47 marathoner, accomplished yoga instructor and owner of Lunar Lotus Yoga, home-schooling mother of three boys, and high-level junior alpine skier. She also just successfully finished Des Linden's Run Destober. This grueling challenge involved running a mile for each calendar date in October, ending with 31 miles on October 31. That's 496 miles in total with 196 in the final week. Simply incredible.   Danielle was a bigtime skier as a youngster. She only ran for one year in high school and not at all in college. After her second son was born she really dedicated herself to the sport and fount amazing results. In fact, after several years she found herself within earshot of an Olympic Trials Qualifying time. In the years between those skiing and childbirth Danielle battled a crushing eating disorder. It was a battle she nearly lost.  Today she is not only a sub-elite runner with even bigger visions and goals ahead but she is also high-level yoga practioner. We also talk about how has positively impacted her running and her life. This is a topic we haven't discussed much on the show and it was eager to dive-in.  #278 - Mastering 40, Ep. 5 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4670

The new Mastering 40 episode is here and it details some major variances in performance and mindset. First, Adrienne Langelier, my sport psychologist, and I talk through a recent poor performance in a 10k workout that was a complete mental failure. From there we discuss how I should mentally plan out to my 5k race effort (a model that worked exceedingly well). Finally, we take a deep dive in my lifelong habit that has been killing my potential. This is a topic that we will talk about several times over the coming year. In the second half of the episode coach James McKirdy breaks down my first race of the season - a virtual 5k. This was the first time I have ever successfully completed a coach's pre-race plan and the first time I have negative split a race. Progress!
