Without much fanfare, Starbucks opened a “Reserve” bar in SoMa last month, a sleek new shop at 201 Mission St., which, as it turns out, is the first such Starbucks location in San Francisco. Similar “coffee bars” already exist in Los Gatos and Redwood City.For the uninitiated, a Starbucks Reserve bar sells some of the company’s rarest beans (like Jamaica Blue Mountain) brewed in small batches, alongside regular Starbucks coffees.

I’d gotten a taste of the 1992 Chateau Beaux Hauts En Tirage Extra Brut at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, fell in love with it and spent years trying to track down its maker, Don Baumhefner.That 1992 edition, which spent a remarkable 18 years en tirage (meaning the wine rests in bottle with dead yeast cells, developing an amazing set of rich, flavors and texture), was of an endangered species.
