ABG - AsianBossGirl show

ABG - AsianBossGirl

Summary: A podcast for the modern day Asian American woman hosted by Melody Cheng, Helen Wu, and Janet Wang. We started this podcast as an outlet for topics we are interested in, and for sharing stories we have as 20-30 something yr. old Asian American women working, dating, and living in Los Angeles. It's no secret that Asian women are lacking in almost all media outlets. As three women working in finance, tech, and production who balance careers, life aspirations, and eventful social lives (we have our fair share of 5am returns from the club), we hope our perspectives can help, inform, and entertain those girls (and guys) with similar backgrounds or an interest in our backgrounds. We like to think of this as our invitation for you to join our once private girl talk sessions! So grab a glass of wine and let's get this show started ;)

 Episode 40: Single and Ready to… Marry? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:56:59

Ah.. the ever continuous discussion of dating (or, lack thereof). For anyone else in their post-collegiate, 30s+ stage in life, this one’s for you! We talk about the sweet spot between our 20s and 30s, where we’re no longer in a low-stakes college relationship, we’ve already been on plentyyy of dates to know the qualities we look for in a significant other, and we feel like we're SUPPOSED to be in a steady relationship building towards a family -- but 2 out of 3 of us, are not. Mel and Janet share their recent date experiences, how to maturely and respectfully 'reject' someone, qualities we gauge in finding a good partner (including wanting to jump them), and Helen talks through how to manage a busy schedule while finding time to spend with her s/o. This is also the first time we're including a "Dear ABG" segment, where we incorporate YOUR voicemails into our podcast and answer your Q's! For your chance to be featured, send us a voicemail at (213) 262 - 8776! Thanks for all the recent submissions!

Episode 39: Dealing with Imposter Syndrome | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:55

Imposter Syndrome - a state of insecurity & self doubt about one’s ability and/or achievements, believing they are due to luck or having successfully deceived others into thinking they are smarter or more capable than they really are. It’s a prevalent feeling (especially amongst women); this fear of being exposed as a “fraud”.  As women, and more specifically, as Asian women, the three of us have had several episodes where we've felt held back by crippling thoughts of not being enough. Whether it's because we said something 'dumb', because we sit in board rooms where no one else looks like us, because we don't feel cultured or worldly enough -- whatever it is, we (sometimes) leave the possibility of success to others. In this episode, we dive into the many moments where we feel imposter syndrome, both in our career and throughout our personal relationships.  Episode 38: In Honor of Father's Day - AsianBossDads | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:52:27

In honor of Father’s Day, we are focusing this week’s episode on the father figures in our lives. We share our relationships with each of our fathers and father figures, discussing everything from who they are as people to what we have inherited from them and how our cultural backgrounds have shaped those relationships. We even get into ideal dad traits that we look for in a partner. We hope this episode inspires you to think about your own relationship with your father or father figures in your life. Don’t forget to call your dad to wish him a Happy Father’s Day!

Let us know also if you’ve tried these questions out with a friend or a romantic interest, and if these 36 questions deepened your ties! Presumably, these questions work for all..

Episode 36: The Menstrual Movement with Nadya Okamoto | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:54:53

May 28th is Menstrual Hygiene Day. We celebrated by sitting down for a conversation with Nadya Okamoto, a 21 year old social entrepreneur, activist, Chief Brand Officer, and speaker for The Menstrual Movement, the power of Generation Z, and youth activism. Nadya drops some major knowledge on female hygiene, generation Z media habits and trends, and experiencing both privilege and homelessness. She shares what it's like being an ivy league student balancing work and dating, her unique family experience and its effects on her cultural identity, and being a badass boss while still experiencing imposter syndrome. Please join us in this episode as we chat with Nadya!

 Episode 35: 36 Questions to Fall in Love (Part I) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:75

Anddddd....we're back! Season 4, we out here! Returning with an intimate episode where we go through the exercise brought to fame by NY Times Article "The 36 Questions That Lead to Love" by Daniel Jones. The activity is based on psychology studies that explore increasing intimacy between strangers by having them ask each other a specific series of personal questions - three sets of twelve questions, each set more intensely personal than the previous set. The premise is that mutual vulnerability creates connection and closeness. Listen in as we ask each other these personal questions, and share our intimate answers. We're also trying out something new - a segment called "Dear ABG" where we address listener questions. Leave a voicemail with your questions or a shout out to a friend at (213) 262 - 8776. We're excited to be back and can't wait to hear from you!

 Episode 34: Reflections & Resolutions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:45:18

It’s been such an amazing journey of shared stories and building a small ABG/ABB community with y’all. As we near the end of the first month of 2019, we reflect on our 2018 conclusions, touch upon our 2019 resolutions, and cringe/celebrate how we’ve been tracking on those #goals/#aims/#focuses to date. Join us as we talk about our intentions for the rest of the year: our shift in focus towards mental health, being more open to romance, a dry Janet, continuing to support other Asian women in the areas they excel at, becoming a better friend, and plans for ABG next season. We’ve already helped Janet w/ one of her focuses of the year – becoming a yogi! [jk, but she CAN do a free standing headstand now  - WOW!!] We are taking a short break to get them vital juices flowing again to bring new energy and a season full of fresh, kick-ass content for y’all. We’ll continue to stay connected via the Internets. Keep an eye out for MERCH!! And if you’re in the LA area this weekend, hope to see you at our LIVE meet up this Saturday, 2/2 at 18 Social in DTLA!! Please RSVP in the link in our IG bio if you haven’t already ;)

Episode 33: Mastering the Art of Adulting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:03

Whether you’re still in college and applying for an apartment for the first time, 27 and figuring your shit out after that quarter life crisis, OR in your 30’s and you’re starting a family...we’re constantly trying to master the art of adulting.  In this episode, we want to talk about the moments we realize we’re actually becoming an adult-from the times we'd rather play board games than go to the club, to the times we shell out extra money for kitchen gadgets instead of fast food. Whether we like it or not, we’re growing up aka adulting.

Episode 32: What They Don't Tell You About Giving Birth | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:15

Babies, babies, babies…in the last episode of Season 1 “Episode 12: Labor of Love” we focused on the topic of babies! We fantasized about what it would be like to have children - from pregnancy, to labor, to the process of raising them. But because none of us are actual mothers, this discussion was all hypothetical. Sharing her pregnancy and birthing story for the first time, our good friend Cathy shines light on the blissful moments to the unexpected hardships of being a new mom.  You might know Cathy from her YouTube channel, which boasts over 300,000 subscribers, which she manages in addition to being an x-ray tech, and now, also a new mama! Once you’ve taken a listen, head over to her IG @yeeitscathy for more cute pics of her baby girl, Isla Renee.

Episode 31: Questions from our Listeners! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:27

What’s a season without a Q & A episode? With season 3 more than half way through, we’ve continued to receive encouraging messages & engaging questions. Due to the nature of our work schedules, we don’t have the capacity to answer every question (but we do read each one!). These episodes allow us to address some of the messages that come through :)  In this episode, we chat about our experiences with our first boyfriends, how we manage our finances, what the podcast has taught us and more! Thank you to those who take time out of YOUR busy schedule to write us- it really makes our day. You keep us going

 Episode 30: Pursuit of Yappiness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:48:00

What is a "Yappie"? Some would say it's the epitome of the model minority myth. Others would argue there's nothing wrong with it. In today's episode, we'll explore the definition and effects of a "yappie" life with a special guest who has created an entire mini-series around this concept. His name is Philip Wang. He is a writer, director, actor, and he has been running a lil ol’ YouTube channel called Wong Fu Productions, even before the beginning of YouTube! For someone who stumbled deep into ‘the industry’ through his work, Philip has since voluntarily used his platform to push the Asian American agenda forward through his shorts, his social, his outreach, his mentorship, and many other initiatives that have created a wave for positive community change. Moreover, he has spent many nights single handedly guiding the ABG ladies through the ups and downs of editing and producing a podcast, and he is the crux and biggest supporter of what you are hearing today. We hope you enjoy this episode and this ABB as much as we do.

Episode 29: Asian Women - Do We Fit the Stereotypes? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:17

Whether it’s the color of our skin, the job title on our LinkedIn, or the city we answer when someone asks us where we are from, each of these aspects of identity are an opportunity for someone to assume other traits about us. In this episode, we discuss a handful of stereotypes that apply to us as women of Asian descent: from our driving skills to our math skills, our physical strength to our bedroom preferences, and our spending habits (or lack thereof) to our tolerance for alcohol. We also dig into stereotypes associated with each of our professions: fashion, finance, and technology, as well as the neighborhoods we grew up in: San Jose, Boston, and Orange County. Take a listen and let us know if you can relate. What are some stereotypes applied to you, and are they sometimes true? Please excuse the choppiness in the first half of the episode - we had some technical difficulties! Thank you in advance for your understanding!

Episode 28: The One About Friendships | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:59

Friendships. One of the most important elements in our lives. From the people you go out with on Friday nights to the individuals you can always depend on during tough times...some can say our friends are AS important as family. From a young age, we are taught the idea of friendships and it’s basic foundations/needs. But as we grow older and our interests, values, and where we are in life change, our relationships with our friends change as well. Some remain present in our lives and some relationships take other forms. In today’s episode, we want to talk about the different types of friends/friendships we had in our stages of life, what happens when you grow apart, and how we define a good friendship.

 Episode 27: Thankful, Now! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:16

Happy Thanksgiving from the AsianBossGirl team! It’s been over a year now since we’ve started this podcast journey, and we fully recognize that we would not be here without the incredible talents and support of our team (Philip Wang, Kihong Lee, Eric Wang, and Michelle Hsieh!). We also know we wouldn’t be 3 seasons in without all of the gracious love and support from all of YOU! Now more than ever, we see the importance of sharing stories, relating, and growing together in a unified, supportive way. Thank you from the bottom of our soon to be very full bellies. We hope this is only the beginning of a much larger movement for all of us ABGs + ABBs x — In line w/ today’s celebration of thankfulness, we talk about the little things we’re thankful for (think: lash glue, other families babies, facetime) to the bigger things (think: mommas, friends, bros). Take a second to think about a moment you were thankful for this week - what made you smile? Helped you in a way you didn’t expect it to? Share with us!
