My guest today is an internationally acclaimed tango pianist, arranger, and composer. He started studying classical music in early childhood, and in 2005, he won 1st prize at the “Bienal Juvenil” National Competition for Young Artists. From there, he performed for several years, and collaborated with a number of high profile orchestras in Argentina. Upon discovering tango, today’s guest was awarded with the Orquesta Escuela de Tango scholarship, and joined the ensemble under the leadership of the legendary Emilio Balcarce. As a tango musician, he performed in over 1000 concerts in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2015, he won the prestigious Gardel prize for Best Tango Album by a New Artist with his album Tangos Para Piano. He has performed and collaborated with legendary tango musicians, including a decade composing and arranging with Victor Lavallén, who was Osvaldo Pugliese’s arranger. There are a ton of other accomplishments I could list, but I’ll probably kill my wrists if I keep typing them. My guest today is a tango musician and composer. He was born and raised in Moscow, and started playing piano at the age of 7. He then relocated to San Francisco, and picked up the accordion. During that time, he studied with Peter DiBono, San Francisco’s most celebrated accordionist. After becoming interested in Tango, today’s guest then took to playing the bandoneon, and went on to study with great musicians such as Ville Hitula and Hector Del Curto. Nowadays, he keeps busy as the leader of the tango group Tangonero. He is also part of the Stowe Tango Music Festival Orchestra, and in 2018, he entered the Che Bandoneon International Competition and won the Bronze Medal. Let’s meet Alex Roitman... My guest today is an amazing guitarist. He fell in love with the instrument at a young age, and went on to get his Bachelors in Music Performance from SUNY Fredonia. From there, he was awarded a full scholarship to the Arizona State University Graduate School of Music, where he got his Masters Degree in Classical Guitar Performance. Throughout the 90s, he collaborated with several Grammy Award winners, and had some of his music featured on national television programs. In addition to having performed as a soloist all over the US with various orchestras, today’s guest has also taught multiple music courses at community colleges in Phoenix, Arizona, and Eugene, Oregon. Eventually he discovered tango dancing, which would become another creative addition to his musical expertise. His rendition of Milonga del Ayer, released in 2005, became a huge hit in tango communities all over the world. Many thanks go out to Homer Ladas and Chicho Frumboli for helping to promote the song! My guest today is both a dancer and a writer. Originally from Los Angeles, she has spent a considerable amount of time living in France and Mexico. She also spent 11 years living in Buenos Aires, where she immersed herself in the dance scene... and as you can imagine, spent a lot of time dancing, learning, and teaching tango. In 2006, she was a finalist in the Buenos Aires Tango Championships. As a writer, she's published articles on dance, books, travel, and international culture. Her works have appeared in magazines, professional journals, and anthologies, including Solamente en San Miguel and Chicken Soup for the Soul: Reboot Your Life. Her two published books include Arabesque: Dancing on the Edge in Los Angeles, and The Church of Tango: a Memoir. Her third book, which completes her memoir trilogy, is called Intoxicating Tango: My Years in Buenos Aires. It is finished, and will be released in November 2019. Let's meet Cherie Magnus...
