IT in the D show

IT in the D

Summary: So what do a couple of IT guys from Detroit talk about when they go to the bar? Welcome to the IT in the D show, brought to you by long-time Detroit IT veterans Bob Waltenspiel (The Sales Guy), and Dave Phillips (The Geek). The duo has been putting on free networking events for the metro Detroit information technology community for over 10 years, helped more than 1,200 people find new jobs, and been featured in local and national news stories and publications for their efforts. After taking on speaking engagements starting in 2011 that helped refine their message, in 2013 they took their ramblings to a broadcast format that has proven to be far more popular than anyone expected. The IT in the D show is more conversational and less instructional – it is far more geared toward entertainment and local goings-on in the metro Detroit area than a deep-dive about specific technical issues. It’s a bar chat, not technical seminar. You’ll hear more movie quotes than MySQL queries and more Depeche Mode than development methodologies. Not that the guys don’t roll up their sleeves and deep dive from time to time, but with guests ranging from local CIOs and CEOs to roller derby girls and pop culture icons from the 80s, don’t let the “IT” in “IT in the D” scare you. Each weekly two-hour show typically includes current events and stories, guests ranging from local entrepreneurs to local IT rock stars to people with great local stories to tell, rants, raves and everything you’d expect from a couple of guys who have known each other and been drinking together for nearly two decades.

Hey, this is episode three 59 of the one and all the in the D show broadcasting live from our houses. This is Bob, the sales guy that is Dave geek. Randy, I do the Twitters is arguing about satellite broadband. You can find us online@itinthed.com and do us a favor. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. I mean, you should. Cause I mean, God knows you're not going to see us anytime soon.     Uh huh No, we were hell bent. We were all bent on doing an event in August. That's not happening. Nope. Did we were hell bent on doing that last event in March. We were like, it'll be fine. We're good to go. And, and then it all came tumbling down. I'm leaning I'm so we were like, I think I'm just gonna put it on the calendar for September. Just see what happens. Right. Well that's all you can do at this point. You know, just see what happens. Well, you know, Thursday, September, um, we're either going to, we're probably going to be at Nancy whiskeys down at Corktown. So, uh, put it on your calendars and then just keep an eye on what we're saying and doing, because obviously we're not going to put anybody in danger and we want everybody to be safe and cool, except for you. And you know who you are, we'll put you in danger. Yeah, no, I mean, it's, it's been a weird dude. I mean, you know, with just watching, you know, what's going on and, and you've got, you know, some States that are rolling back, uh, you've got, you know, an and starting to close up bars and restaurants again, you've got, you know, all the debates with school, you know, that are going on left and right. I mean, I got, you know, teacher, friends and parent friends and it's, this is like just the biggest cluster of clusters that I've seen. I like, there's been nothing like this in my life. Like, no, cause here's, here's the thing like, and this reminds me of arguments I've had at work before someone needs to drop the gavel because you have too many people saying too many things at the same time. Like it's like, that's okay. That's not okay. That's okay. But this isn't okay. You know? And you know, if he had fries, then it's okay. That's not okay, but not chicken wings or chicken wings, but not fries and chicken, chicken strips, but not chicken wings, chicken, you can be outdoors or you're going to be on motorcycles. New, new, new, new that's bad. No, no, no, you can't do that like, Oh, well, okay. So there's, there's a tie into one of our stories. Like everybody's kind of tweaking big. Well, and there's a difference between being on motorcycles and being on motorcycles, outdoors, and then being on a motorcycle outdoor with 250,000 Other people and bringing great dude. You ever, you ever been to a biker party? You ever been? Oh, when I was at Daytona for spring break, when I was negative the last week of biker week. And how, how socially distant our people during those events. They're common dot. Well, yeah. Cause they were going to kick your ass if you were the guy with the sun and blonde hair and the cheese, Why And the white tree torn. Yeah, the, yeah, the, uh, the wannabe Brian Bosworth look alike. Yeah. They weren't really interested in hanging out with you. Yeah, yeah. Um, no, just, I just wish someone would have a consensus. Um, cause like, yeah, now the school thing now, like normally that type of thing would come from the federal government Leaders And it's like, can we pick a doctor that like says wear masks, then the first thing he goes to in public doesn't wear one while he's sitting two feet from people. Well, but, and I do it, like I saw that meme a lot and it's one of those like, okay, so the person to his right was wearing a mask, uh, the person too. And, and he had it pulled down.

Episode 358, talking about security and the usual fun and excitement with Patrick Garrity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6

What is up? Thank you for hanging out with us. Once again. It's money night. It is time for the it in the D show. This is episode three 58 broadcasting live from our quarantine homes. This is Bob, the sales guy that is Dave. The geek Randy. I do the Twitters is doing the Twitter, his finest online it in the D dot comma. Do us a favor. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine. Podcasts are sold. Yeah. So, Hey everybody, I'm again, this is usually where we talk about our events and we're still not having any, so moving right along Chicka boom, Chicka, boom. He's a looking, I do not anticipate in August of any, even if it is outdoors.     Yeah. It's yeah. I mean, looking at everything going on. I mean, I'm keeping an honestly, I'm keeping a closer eye on what's going on, what door what's going to go on with schools right now, more than anything else. Um, but it's uh, yeah, I I'm, let's just say, yeah, it's not looking good. No, but the show must go on. And now we are joining where luckily joined. We were, we had him scheduled out right. When the suitors were still open. We had to come. I think this was back in March or April. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. And he's shot me a note and said, Hey, I still want me on. I said, yeah, it's not a bad time. So, uh, we're joined by the, uh, the illustrious one. Mr. Pat Garrity. How you doing, sir? Great. Thanks for having me on the show today. Yeah. Thanks for joining us. Appreciate it now. Um, before we get into it, now, you're the VP of engineering at blue Mira operations, operations. I oversee product marketing sales. Got it. I mean, do everything, whatever needs to get them Every, uh, every once in a while we run into, I run into someone at an event. They basically takes over my LinkedIn feed and I like to congratulate you on my LinkedIn feed. That's great to hear. Hey, it's not, you can attribute that. Not to me too, is a amazing, she does content marketing for, for a, I almost said duo, but blue Mira. Um, and, uh, yeah, it's been amazing. The work that she does and also like our security team is creating a ton of the content as well, and trying to make useful stuff for people, uh, in the security industry. So, so you're just putting it all out there, trying to look important and smart is what you're saying. You're not actually creating any of it. You're just, Yeah, I can't, you know, some bit idea wise, um, pointing people in the right direction, but yeah, the team, the team is truly the ones working on that and publishing some cool stuff and some free tools and whatnot. That's awesome. So one of the reasons I was intrigued about having you on the show is a, that I think blue mirror is doing some very cool stuff. And B you kind of have a long history with, uh, you know, with duo, which is kind of a, one of the big, big wind stories. And, you know, and see, I want to talk about what everyone is. Is there a shift in security focus with, with everybody working from home now and, you know, you can kind of reassess your place in the world. So I guess let's start there if your, your, your company X, and you've got half your company or all your company working from home, and you can kind of sit back and look at your, I guess, security strategy. Are you changing right now? Or are you simplifying, are you getting more complex? What what's on everybody's mind right now? Yes, sir. Certainly simplifying, um, is one of the big themes. I think everyone had these ideas of three to five year cloud migrations, um, moving from on premise to cloud. We see that everywhere. Uh, it's essentially accelerated adoption of all of that. And the reality is, is, Oh man, we didn't have security controls in place. And any on any of those things,

Episode 357 – Furbies, Ghostbusters vs Stranger Things, Treasure Hunting, and of course Masks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6

Hey, welcome. We are live. This is episode three 57 of the it, and the D show. We are broadcasting live from our homes. This is Bob, the sales guy that is Dave. The geek Randy. I do the Twitters is doing the Twitter is finding us online@itinthed.com and do us a favor, give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. Yeah. And so, uh, I mean, yet again, this is where we usually talk about events and we ain't doing them right now. Uh, so we are hopeful that we'll be, uh, doing those again in August. Uh, we're going to see how all this shakes out, you know what I mean? You guys know as well as we do. Nobody knows what the hell is going on. Um, you know, our, our bars and restaurants going to stay open, our school's going to open, who knows? We're going to see what happens.     Is anything going to open? Yeah, no kidding. No, I mean, right now, tentative, I think we're either going to do Nancy whiskeys on the patio. Um, and I wouldn't be opposed to DSC and other, they have that back door or the back alley, a beach party thing going on. That wouldn't be a bad Either. So yeah. And I mean, it's, it's decent. I mean, even the indoor courtyard, um, is, is really wide open. I mean, there's, you know, I mean, that's that whole space to, um, I mean, that's, you know, the issue with, you know, booking something outdoors is your weather dependent, you know, I mean, you know, DSE wound up closing all their restaurants and stuff on Sunday because of all the rain did they really well, it's a thing. If you have no indoor seating, what are you going to do, Dave? You know how bored we all are? How bored are we? We are so bored that Netflix has put on supermarket sweep from the eighties that I'm watching. Aye. Okay. It's it's bad enough that it's on. It's worse that you're watching. Do you remember? Oh yes, no, I do. Are you, are you about to say, do you remember the time? Nope. No. So I was going September. Actually. You were going to Michael Jackson, but that's okay. Here's how bad this show is. Like the guy that's really the guy, the host is dead inside. Like you're watching all, you can tell he's reading cue cards. And he had such High hopes of being gene, Rayburn of being, you know, the guy from Joker's wild of being Pat say Jack, but no, he's the supermarket sweeps guy. That's that's the gig. He landed. If you can hear it in his inflection, how daddy is. Oh yeah. Oh, he's, he's not, he's not, well, someone should check on him and see if he's doing okay. Who's dressing these people. These people were wearing different colored sweatshirts, like a purple and a pink and orange. One with white polos underneath with the collar flipped out. Like, I mean, like which of these three items, Bob? Bob, it was, it was the eighties. People wore that. I didn't say you did. I didn't, but people who were that, it was a thing. No, Mark did the best line. And he goes out and white is all the women on the show look like Marcy Darcy. Oh, they absolutely do. They. Yeah, no, I've, I've clicked through a couple episodes. It's they? They absolutely do Part of like, you have to load up your shopping cart and get the most expensive crap. So like everyone, all they have is these cards full of hams and diapers. They run to the meat aisle and load up on all of the, like the roasts and the ribs and the, and the hams and the Turkey. They just it's. It's ridiculous. It's yeah. If you've never seen it and you want to see the kind of shit that we were stuck with in the eighties could go check out supermarket sweeps and, and, and then, and then feel bad for us. And they're getting

I promise myself the next time we had Fred on, I would have ominous music cued up for the background and I failed If you don't know who that faces in the bottom left, or if you're listening to the podcast after we are joined by the illustrious one, um, one of our, the best guests we've ever had, and he's been gracious enough to be on the show for a third time. Mr. Fred Brown, sir. How are you? And now you didn't need to wear a tie on our behalf. I got, uh, I, I, I was meeting the appropriate standards, so I appreciate, you know, what we thought that everything was kind of making sense. Right? You made, you brought the world to our fingertips. You started to make sense and give a stats. And it seems like since you left us, the planet has completely on that right. Going on. Oh man. Yeah. So yeah, the covert writer is really the tough one. It turns out, uh, we're we're finding out the good news is we're finding out more about it. The Bad news is that we're not managing very well, especially in the Americas. So if you look at the coven outbreak, You don't say [inaudible] Okay. 60% of it between kind of a U S and Brazil. And uh, yeah, we, we made, we made some, some tactical areas. We, and it's just completely unforgiving, you know, this is about nature. So if you, you know, if you make a mistake with nature, it's just, it's just merciless and that's, that's where we're at. We're at right now. Uh, I ran some numbers just so you, if you're interested in for sure. And, and um, yeah, you know what I, uh, hold on, Honestly, I feel like we're seeing the, basically the effect of the numbers that you showed us the last or the first time you were on where this is not a one, like even, okay. You hear about, you know, the, uh, the R T value and it's okay. It's just over one. That doesn't mean that for every like one person infects one person we're seeing that skyrocketing exponential growth rate right now, which is super concerning. Yeah, it is. If you know, the epidemiology is about numbers, eyebrows, and numbers, everyone's kind of coming in at about 200,000 through, uh, September one. That's a lot of people in,

Episode 355 – Still Figuring Out HBO MAX, Microwaving Books and Money, Catching Up | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:07

Welcome to the one and only IT in the D show. This is episode three 55, happy Canada day happy 4th of July. Um, on behalf of all of us, we hope that a multi Claus brought you your syrup into quality using the States. We hope that kid rock brought you your fireworks and Bush light, 30 packs. Um, we are broadcasting live from our homes, actually have all of our fingers. Um, this is Bob, the sales guy that is David geek. Randy, I do the Twitters is doing the Twitters.       Oh, by the way, breaking news, uh, Trey Parker is still going to be the voice of mr. Hankey, even though he is not a piece of shit. Yeah. I mean, it depends on who you ask, I guess, Find us online it in the D dot comma. Do us a favor, give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere or I guess our soul. Uh, yeah. And so, you know, again, uh, just in case you've missed the last couple episodes, we've decided we're holding off until August for any of our events. I actually just killed off the, uh, the, the one for July for Anarbor. Uh, and so yeah, you know, when things get nice and safe and mellowed out again, uh, we'll, we'll be more than happy to get everybody back together. Cause God knows we miss people. Um, but yeah, such is life. It is what it is. We're trying to stay safe. I looked at my calendar for this week, just from Google and Friday was supposed to be the ministry came at DM concert and I'm like, Hey, good. It got postponed and good. Cause I'm, can't walk still. So a double good. Um, but yeah, April next year. But then, uh, I found Judas priest. It's kind of weird. Uh, went on sale for the Fox Lasar um, like in September. So I'm like, cool. I like a good heavy metal show. Um, tickets are like a hundred bucks. So I'm like, okay. You know, for like early, like, and there's nothing sold. Like if you go to Ticketmaster right now, you can get like fifth row seats, um, all the way around the box, Dude. Well, I mean that that's too early. I like, I'm sorry. That's that's what three months from now? Ish. Wait. No. Yeah, no two months from now. Um, and so, I mean, looking at it, looking at what's going through with, um, you know, Miami just shut down all their bars, restaurants, beaches, gyms, yada, yada, you got Arizona in the midst of all this guy, did it like it's no, this isn't going to be cleaned up in two months at all. Who knows? That's what I like. Yeah. Cause I'm thinking like, Hey, I want to buy the tickets. Nope, no sight, no Bob science knows. It's not going to know. Let's be clear. Science knows it's not going to be done. Well, you know, you know, you don't, you don't never know it could be a vaccine come out. It could just go away. Who knows, or it could be, or a, you know, it could be a world mass hysteria for the next three months. And you know, more people turn into HOA presidents, you know, This is true. Well, and so I do, I love the meme. That's been floating around that said, uh, if nothing else, 2020 has proven to me that time travel is real because they keep going back and trying to fix things. But then they just wind up making it worse, like the premise of every time travel movie ever known to mankind. And so, you know, that's why the murder Hornets, uh, disappeared. Uh, but now we have the bubonic. Plague is back in China. Is that B O O B or No? It'd be, you know, there, there are no boobs on people's necks. It, it is, it is bubonic, No plague. And I'm like, Ooh, is that good? No, it's no, it's not your girl standing behind you while you're sitting down. It's that's not, that's not what this is. Damn it, There are plenty of cases of bubonic plague in the American Southwest over...

Episode 354 – Life Behind The Bar in the COVID World | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6

Hey, welcome. Thanks for hanging out with us. This is the it and the D show. We are broadcasting live from our homes and from the bar. Um, this is Bob, the sales guy, Dave, the geek, uh, Randy, I do the Twitters is doing the Twitters, uh, guests this week include, we got the Mikey from the old shillelagh downtown, and we got August in the house, old friend from whiskey in the jar and Hamtramck. We're going to be talking about life behind the bar, and now that things are slowly opening up. And then also we've got a ton of stories going on. We've got his big boys gone forever. We're running out of pennies and Dave, you may fire when ready? Wait, wait. I don't think we can get started until I get some shredded cheese for my fajitas. Oh, good Lord.       Alright, go ahead, Bob. Hey, welcome. What is going on? This is the it and the d show. Can we still call it the it in the d show, we got to rename it. And at some point, Judy, Bob did, I've been, I've been lobbying for two and a half geeks for four years now. Can you still be Dave? I don't know. We'll figure that out later. This is episode three 54. We are broadcasting live from either our quarantine homes or the bars in one of them in Hamtramck. This is Bob, the sales guy that is Dave. The geek Randy. I do the Twitters is doing the Twitter. You can find us online at [inaudible] dot com. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. We, uh, and again, we've talked about this before. Uh, we are, uh, Lee, we're leaving events out, uh, until August, no pun intended. Uh, and we'll, we'll be bringing them back then. We'll do something outside and yeah. So that's, that's the update there. So yeah. Hey, just like we just introduced earlier, we have two illustrious guests, friends of ours for very, very long time. Both of them bartenders, we kind of want to do, uh, discuss, um, what life was like a behind the bar. We, we, you know, a few of us have been to the bar, but, uh, joining us is, uh, Mikey from the old Shalala downtown Detroit, sir. How have you been, haven't seen you in awhile? Uh, I've been well, man, uh, just getting used to this non quarantine stuff and living the life and working, uh, dealing with all of the wonderful public. And then now this is a, it's actually a first for the show. We've been doing this for what? Seven years. We haven't had anyone ever calling live from the bar. August gets legs in the house. I mean, we've, we've done live broadcasts from bars, but we got August in the house. He is actually tending bar right now at whiskey and a jar down in Hamtramck, sir. How you doing? You're on mute bud August. I'm actually not working tonight, but I figured it'd be fun to come here and show you just exactly what we're looking at These days at afar in Hamtramck. Uh, ms. Katie is pretty much by herself with a few people outside, a couple of regulars. And that's about the state of the world down here. Yeah. So odd. I'll start things off with you like life behind the bar. Like, so I started trickling into a few bars. I live out everyone, you know, I live on Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, um, the bars out here pretty much business as usual. Um, a couple of them took out a couple of tables. Most of them like the open air ones in Rochester Hills are still the same. Dave was telling stories about going to, uh, with down a Cass corridor. They haven't set up like a, like a seven mile gas station with a plastic barricades and little, little windows. So some people are taking it to huge extreme, some people aren't, I guess what's your take on, I guess, the new normal behind the bar? Well, it really depends on where you are. Like I went up to a bar in McComb County last week. I walked in and right walked right the hell out.

Episode 353 – Binging, Financial Apps, New Favorite Shows, Events Updates | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6

Sure. Good to go. Hey, welcome. How's everybody doing? This is episode 353 of the one and only it in the D show. We are broadcasting live from our quarantined homes. This is Bob, the sales guy that is Dave, the geek, get us online it in the d.com. And I do his favorite. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine. Podcasts are sold. Yeah, we would say Randy is doing the Twitters, but we don't know where the hell Randy is. So, uh, yeah, so Randy and Randy, if you're out there or if you know, Randy, go ahead and ping him and tell him he's late. And we're thinking of suitable punishments for him. He might do you want to fire when ready or just roll through? We'll do it in post. That's how that works these days. Perfect fire when ready?       Alright. Hey, welcome back this three 53 of the it and the D show. And like we said, we are a Randy lists and guest list this week. Cheers everybody. We're also a pros. We're also a couple of days late, uh, due to technical difficulties, go figure Highland for everything. Um, we're broadcasting live from our homes. If only we had, if only we knew technology, people that could help with our technology issues who knew it would apparently none of them could fix zoom. You're having it problems that I'm like, did you, is it plugged in? Is it turned on to have you rebooted, but Hey, you can find us online at [inaudible] dot com to his favorite. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. So, and as per usual, uh, we, uh, in case you missed the announcement last week, uh, we have decided to kind of hold off doing our in person events until August. Uh, so we will be setting those up shortly. Um, of course that's assuming everything is still open by the time August rolls around. Cause if you're paying attention, uh, places that opened up are starting to close back down again. So we'll see how that goes. I'm going to be a weather regardless of what it is. It's going to be an outdoor venue. I think we're going to pick Nancy whiskeys down in Corktown. Uh, we're going to see how this all plays out. We should just, we should just have it at like the DCF C soccer field, just we'll we'll all be outside. I think like I saw a thing from rhino. They're doing a wrestling event in the middle of like an eight acre farm. Well, no, it's behind the, uh, the SOC, uh, and it's, they've actually been th they were actually talking about doing it cause you know, we've been running their show for them. Um, they were talking about doing it, uh, at the, at the Marina at, uh, at rhinos Marina. We talked about that when I was hanging out. Cause it's, he's got a huge grab a lot. Yup.
