Trip Henderson (Old Time Harmonica) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:00

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This episode is a great departure from the fiddling you can expect to hear on this program, because my guest is Trip Henderson and his bag of harmonicas. We talk about the harmonica’s role in old time music, which led Trip to invent my new favorite word, which is: banjoistically. Also, we talk briefly about the Old Time community’s brief love affair with Tim Kaine, which in retrospect is just bittersweet to hear.  David Deacon (Kentucky Fiddle Tunes) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:53:57

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is David Deacon, and he curated a nice handful of Kentucky fiddle tunes for us to play! We recorded this at the Brandywine Revival Festival last summer, hidden away up the path near a still pond with a lot of mosquitoes. You can still hear some distant jams from the other side of the holler, and a very alarming bullfrog makes an appearance.  Bertram Levy (Pioneer of Melodic Clawhammer Banjo) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:46:02

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is one of the first people I met at my first ever Clifftop, melodic clawhammer banjoist Bertram Levy. We recorded this late in the week at the Keith McManus tent, so there’s a lot of background noise, but I think it makes a nice, bustling ambiance for our competing bum-diddies. And trigger warning: this episode is all banjo duets. Check out Bertram's website: http://bertramlevy.com/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Andrew Finn Magill (Live at The Random Tea Room) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:50:56

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is the virtuosic and eclectic fiddler, Andrew Finn Magill. We recorded this interview and jam in front a live audience at The Random Tea Room in Philadelphia back in November. Finn is an extremely talented musician with a seemingly bottomless well of interesting stories and experiences. So, he’s basically a dream guest for Get Up in the Cool. And I don’t want to spoil anything in the intro, so I’ll just say that we get into some non-old time shenanigans which I’m always down for.  Best of 2016 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:09

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This is the best of 2016 episode! I spliced together some of my favorite musical and conversational moments from last year, and I gotta say, I’m a lot better at it than those facebook algorithms. Sometime in the next couple months I’m going to make a Best of 2016 CD, and it’s going to have these tunes and a lot more, all remixed and shiny. If you want to check out those full episodes, here are the guests’ names, in order, so you can search for them on your podcatching apps: Adam Hurt on banjo http://www.adamhurt.com/ Harry Bolick on fiddle and vocals http://harrybolick.com/ Jody Kruskal on concertina jodykruskal.com/ Luke Chohany on guitar and vocals https://stringsound.bandcamp.com/releases Rachel Junior and Helen Dana la Fleur on fiddle, viola, and vocals, respectively https://www.facebook.com/sicksadandlonesome/ Alex Kramer on fiddle http://www.alexkramermusic.com/ And Nikos Pappas on fiddle https://www.appalshop.org/store/june-appal-recordings/nikos-pappas-lost-in-the-lowlands/

REBROADCAST: Harry Bolick (Mississippi Fiddle Tunes and Songs from the 1930's) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:49:39

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week is another rebroadcast of an old episode, my interview and jam with Harry Bolick. I wanted to take advantage of my brief pause in posting new content to give this episode a little more love and care. Specifically, I’m slightly better at mixing than I was when I originally released this, so I tweaked a few settings and now the music sounds better. I’m going to keep this intro short and let Harry speak for himself. All I’ll say is that I have an enormous amount of respect for him and his musical interests and ambitions, and when the coup succeeds and Mississippi Fiddle music reigns supreme over all of Old Time, I will be among the assenting voices and I will gladly bow. Stick around after the interview and I’ll tell you where to get Harry’s music, both recorded and printed. Then I’ll tell you how you can support Get Up in the Cool and join the exclusive inner circle of people who listen to each week’s bonus track, or the even more exclusive circle of people who get mp3’s of the tunes from each episode. I hope you enjoy Harry’s stories and the music he’s collected. Take a listen! Buy the recordings: https://harrybolick.bandcamp.com Buy the book: http://mississippifiddle.com

REBROADCAST: Brad Kolodner (New Takes on Old Tunes) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:07

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. I’m currently on vacation in Oregon, doing Christmas with my family and recording Portland area old time players for the show, which, by the way, thank you, faithful listeners, for connecting me with some really big names in the scene out here; I hope to come back to Philly with some awesome interviews and music to share with you all. Anyway, I’m taking a little break from posting new episodes. Not because I’m behind schedule: I’ve actually been keeping up with my goal to record 4 interviews a month since the summer. I was worried that there would be a dry spell outside of festival season, but so far, that has not been the case. Turns out Old Time players are always down to play tunes and talk about Old Time. Who would have guessed? So, this is a rerun of my episode with Brad Kolodner. I wanted to post it again for a couple reasons. First: Ken and Brad have a new CD out called The Swift House, which you should buy. More details on how to buy that after the interview. Second: The newer episodes of Get Up in the Cool sound better because I’m better at mixing now. I wanted to give Brad’s episode the same treatment. Stick around after the interview to find out how to support Get Up in the Cool and hear when Brad’s playing near you and how to buy his music. A quick clarification to my patreon supporters: you won’t be charged this episode or any other rerun, and I won’t typically release rewards for these episodes for the same reason. Once again, don’t worry, I’ll start airing new episodes again sometime in January. I hope you all like banjo duets. Here’s my jam and interview with Brad Kolodner. Enjoy!  Gordon Arnold (Old Time Cello) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:32

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This is the last episode of 2016! As awful as this year has been, what with the fascists and the celebrity deaths, I’ve had such a great time recording this show; I think it became a real coping mechanism for me, honestly. I hope it’s been helpful for you, too. This week I’m sharing my jam and chat with Old Time cellist, Gordon Arnold. Gordon is super adventurous, which you know I love, but he’s also very rooted in the tradition.  Rachel Eddy (Inclusivity and Jam Etiquette) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:17:05

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Rachel Eddy! She wanted to talk about inclusivity and etiquette in Old Time sessions, which we sometimes touch on in this show, but Rachel approaches the topic with a lot more nuance and intention, and I really appreciated what she had to say!  Alan Kaufman (The Tunesmith) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:14

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s and next week’s friend is Alan Kaufman! Also joining us is Don Stratton on guitar, who will be featured in his own episode in the near future. Alan is a tunesmith and a songsmith; while most of us make withdrawals from the traditional music bank, Alan makes regular deposits. This week’s episode is dedicated to his original fiddle tunes and next week we’ll play and sing his original songs. Alan possesses that rare combination of whimsy and thoughtfulness necessary to make the perfect neo-traditional tune. If you play Old Time, maybe try to learn a few from this episode. I especially recommend learning “Five Bales of Hay.” Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool Like and follow Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool Like and follow Alan Kaufman's kid's jam: https://www.facebook.com/BBUkidsjam Buy Alan and Don's CD, All in Good Time: http://peapatchmusic.com/

Stephen Landis (Fiddle Hermit) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:09

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. How are you doing? It’s been a rough week. I know I’ve been feeling anxious, pent up. Some of you have been binge listening NPR and Facebooking yourselves to sleep; just leaning into to the discomfort. Others of you, like me, have been checking out. Deleting social media apps on your phone, engaging in lots of escapism; maybe overeating a bit. This week’s guest, Stephen Landis, is a close friend of mine, and I often look to him when I’m contemplating how to be; which is why I’m releasing his interview now, even though I only recorded it a week or so ago. Also, Stephen introduced me to Old Time, and I’m very grateful to him. Not just for teaching me my first tunes, but for sharing his reverence for the tradition.  Alex Lacquement (Old Time Bass) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:54:08

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Alex Laquement, and he’s a bassist! A Get Up in the Cool first, and hopefully not the last. Alex plays Old Time music with a lot of freedom, but he has a keen sense for exercising restraint. It’s pretty rare to find someone who excels at both leading and following; in music, but also, in general.  Ron Buchanan (Square Dance Tunes) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:44:41

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. The Old Time community is of full of internal rock stars. Some of them realize how impressive they are and they act accordingly, and I’m not trying to throw shade, I think everyone appreciates a little well-earned swagger. But for every conspicuous virtuoso, there are dozens of humble, unassuming musicians who are utter revelations on their instruments. My guest today, Ron Buchanan, is an Old Time bodhisattva. He’s one of the warmest, gentlest souls in the community; he’ll play with anyone, anytime, and thank them for it. But nobody plays the fiddle like Ron. He’s especially good at breathing life into tired, overplayed tunes. In the latter half of the show we play Spotted Pony, Arkansas Traveler, and Soldier’s Joy, basically Free Bird, Stairway to Heaven and a third culturally relevant example. It was like playing them for the first time again. Ron loves old time music, and he plays it with a joyfulness that is thoroughly earned.  Jane Rothfield (Chasing the Old Time Muse) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:48:59

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s featured friend is very dear to me, and I’m sure to many of you as well: fiddler, banjoist, tunesmith and vessel of the Old Time muse, Jane Rothfield. Also, joining us as accompanists are Peter Oswald on cello and Alan Carr on guitar. Between Jane’s whimsical talent, Peter’s unparalleled thoughtfulness and taste, Alan’s deep and diverse musical wisdom and, I like to think, my enabling spirit, we had quite the jam. I think you’re gonna like it! Check out Jane's website: http://www.janerothfield.com/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool
