Joel Brown (Folk Punk, Crooked Tunes, and Community) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:06

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Joel Brown! This interview was recorded in August at Joel’s house in Portland, OR, when I was in town to see my family. We talked about how OT is the most punk-rock genre and our mutual love for crooked tunes. But mostly we connected about the unrivaled sense of community in OT music, a topic I’ve yet to get tired of. Oh, and we play some great, notey tunes.  Tunes we’ll play: Johnny Come Along Rats Gone to Rest Roses in the Morning Sally Johnson Poor Little Johnny’s Gone to War Hell on the Nine Mile Bonus Track: Crooks Brothers Breakdown Support Get Up in the Cool: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool  Listen to my other podcast, Think Outside the Box Set: https://boxset.website/

Hunter Walker (Dulcimer Ambassador) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:44:57

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Hunter Walker from Long Point String Band, with special guest guitarist and also friend Brian Bell! Hunter plays the mountain dulcimer, an instrument I haven’t had much exposure to, so… I’m probably not qualified to say this, but I think he’s probably the best. I heard him play for the first time the night before we recorded this and I had an immediate, physically emotional reaction. The man’s music is breathtaking. And when it’s not breathtaking, it’s super fun and clever. I'm excited for you all to hear it!  Agnes Brogeby, Erling Bronsberg, Kristian Herner, Lydia Malmqvist (My New Swedish Pals) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:45

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a lot of friends this week! Agnes Brogeby, Erling Bronsberg, Lydia Malmqvist, and Kristian Herner, from the bands The Rockridge Brothers, Six String Yada, and Friendly Neighborhood Stringband. And they’re all from Sweden! This session was thrown together pretty last minute, late in the week during Clifftop, but it was exactly what I needed after a week of pretty cerebral interviews and tunes. We basically played a bunch of Old Time song chestnuts, and we had a blast.  Tunes we’ll play: Train on the Island Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key Katie Dear Walk Along John to Kansas Gospel Plow Bonus Track: The Strike Song from Pajala Six String Yada at the South Side Cavern in Stockholm: https://www.facebook.com/events/132744920703813/?acontext=%7B%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22messaging%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22attachment%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%7D%7D]%22%7D The Rockridge Brothers (Kristian Herner) http://rockridgebrothers.com/ https://www.facebook.com/rockridgebrothers/ Buy their albums: https://itunes.apple.com/se/artist/rockridge-brothers/id283781304 Six String Yada (Erling and Agnes) http://www.sixstringyada.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sixstringyada/ Buy their albums: http://www.sixstringyada.com/album/ Friendly Neighbourhood Stringband https://www.facebook.com/FriendlyNeighbourhoodStringband/ Bonefaas Banjos: http://www.johannesbonefaas.com/

John Lane (Missouri Fiddle Tunes) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:56:04

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s guest is John Lane, and we’re going to play some Missouri tunes for you, and tell you which tunes you know and love have been Missouri tunes all along. You may be surprised! Some of you definitely won’t be, because you’re Old Time super nerds, and I love that about you. Never change.  Anyway, this episode is very good. We recorded it in Spitzer Space Telescope’s apartment in Chicago while I was in town for the Midwest Sing and Stomp. His room’s part of an old repurposed dentists’ office, and the room at the end of the hall was an art gallery. The bathroom window opened up onto an ancient fire escape, and when Dan made us pancakes, he had to do it on an electric element. It was just about the most bohemian living situation I’d ever seen, and it was delightful. Dan just hung out in the corner while we jammed, and Chet, a contradance caller from knoxville, I think, sat at his desk and practiced calligraphy. I just wanted to set the scene, because there’s a fair amount of street noise in this episode, and I think it will be more enjoyable if you can picture our setting.  Make sure to stick around after the interview to find out where to listen to John’s music and also hear some exciting news about Get Up in the Cool. Let’s get it started. Here’s my jam and chat with John Lane. Enjoy! Tunes we’ll play: Grand Picnic Salty River Reel Pride of America Coming Up the Pike Iberia Breakdown Bonus Track: Johnny Don’t Come Home Drunk John’s album: https://fiddlerjones.bandcamp.com/releases  Follow John on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/johndaniellane  and YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/twolaneroad  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I’m really excited for you to hear my interview with this week’s friend, Lucas Pasley, because Lucas has a real, personal connection to this music, and it’s rare to interview someone who studied so close to the source. Also joining us is Kilby Spencer on guitar, who’s been on the show a few times before; he’s the one who set me up with a whole bunch of interviews, including this one, and hosted me when I came down to Crumpler, NC last spring. Thanks again, Kilby! Make sure to stick around after the interview to hear about Lucas’ new album and find out how to support Get Up in the Cool and get access to exclusive bonus content. Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Sonya Badigian. I’m not sure exactly when I met Sonya; probably at Clifftop a few years ago, but I really got to know her when she invited me to her birthday party last fall back when she lived in Charlottesville, and I decided to go, on a whim, even though I barely knew her. Old Time music is cool like that.  Tunes we’ll play: Blackfoot John Cole Judge Parker, Take These Shackles Off of Me Sally Goodin Who’s Gonna Talk to Dinah Midnight Bonus Track: Prettiest Little Gal in the County Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool  Buy GUitC Vol. 1 https://camerondewhitt.bandcamp.com/  Order and download Field Recorders’ Collective albums: http://fieldrecorder.org/
