Peter Mawanga (Traditional Music from Malawi) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:59

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a really special friend this week: Peter Mawanga! Peter is a long-time collaborator with former Get Up in the Cool guest Andrew Finn Magill, and when they were on their way through Philly, Finn recommended I get Peter in front of a mic. I was really nervous about it, because Peter is from Malawi, and African rhythms, in general, are way outside my comfort zone. But Peter was lovely and patient and disarming, and he spoon fed me all the polyrhythms. Tunes we’ll play: Samala (Original Malawian Song) Chigule (Original Gule Wamkulu Dance) Nanga Iwe (What About You) (Traditional Malawian Hymn) Lost Indian (Featuring Peter on Sansi)  Seneca Square Dance (Featuring Peter on Talking Drum) Ona (Traditional Malawian Dance) Bonus Track: Rocking in the Weary Land Peter Mawanga's website: http://www.petermawanga.com/ Peter Mawanga and the Amaravi Movement on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PeterMawangaandTheAmaraviMovement/ Contact Peter: PeterMawanga@gmail.com Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool Like and follow Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool/ Join Get Up in the Cool's Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/getupinthecool/ Buy Get Up in the Cool Vol. 1: https://camerondewhitt.bandcamp.com/ Cameron DeWhitt's website: http://www.camerondewhitt.com/

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Devin Forest-Hines, with special guest friend Amelia Baker on guitar. We recorded this in Portland before the Old Time Gathering, about a month and a half ago. Devin chose some really neat tunes for our jam, and I’m pretty sure I’ll keep some of them, especially his version of Shady Grove, which we play towards the end. That’s not clickbait-style rhetoric, I actually liked that tune the best out of all the tunes we played, it just happens to be second to last. This week’s friend is Mark Simos, fiddler and professor at Berklee College of Music. I visited him in his home back in February when I took my Boston trip. I didn’t know Mark at all prior to our session, but both Mark Kilianski and Adam Hurt recommended him, so my expectations were high. And I wasn’t disappointed! Mark’s a fantastic fiddler and he has a lot of ideas about what music is and why it’s important; traditional music especially. So, basically the perfect Get Up in the Cool guest. It was nice to not feel like I was being self-indulgent when I wanted to wax philosophical about fiddle tunes, he was right there with me. But, don’t get the wrong idea, this is by no means an overly talky episode. Mark curated a great jam of great versions of great tunes, with an emphasis on effective, intentional simplicity. I’m really excited for you to hear it! Stick around after the jam and I’ll tell you where to hear more of Mark’s music and possibly study with him. Then, for those of you who are interested, I’ll tell you how to support Get Up in the Cool and feel super good about yourself and also get exclusive bonus content. But first, here’s my interview and jam with Mark Simos. Enjoy!

In Memory of Thornton Spencer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:23

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s episode is a rerun, because I’m on vacation in Oregon with my family, but I thought this would be a great opportunity to remember Thornton Spencer. We recorded this interview and jam with him and his family last spring, and Thornton passed on Nov. 25th at the age of 82 after a short battle with cancer. I am so glad that I got the chance to record him when I did. When I set out to make this show, it was just a pretense to invite myself over to people’s houses and play music with them; I didn’t think I would be confronting mortality, or comforting the dying; Thornton’s son Kilby told me that the day before he passed, he listened to this episode twice, and it was the last time he saw him grinning and talking. I still feel pretty humbled and pensive about the whole thing. But mostly, I’m just relieved that I got to meet him and catch a little bit of his music and his story.
