He argues that while the more celebrated colony of Plymouth, MA was important to America’s origins, so too was the more dysfunctional colony of Jamestown, VA that was established some 13 years before Plymouth. It played an important and overlooked role in the formation of the United States and American democracy.

First we tell the story of the Frederick Tudor, The "Ice King," who single-handedly invented the ice industry way back in 1806. Then I speak with historian Jonathan Rees, the nation's leading authority on all things related refrigeration, to learn how mechanical refrigeration and machine-made ice accelerated this transformation of everyday life.
