Episode 088 : Could Harley buying Ducati be a good thing? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:52:39

Wow, over a lot of the States the weather has been horrible for riding.  Extreme heat and rain over a lot of the country.  We hope you were able to get out and ride some during the past week.  Luckily Kevin and Larry both got in some riding, however, Larry is gearing up for his long riding trip that should provide several moments on upcoming episodes. Thank you for joining us for this Father’s Day edition of Throttled.  Of course we start of with our rides this week and both the guys were able to get out, admittedly not as long as they would have wanted. Mail Call: Email –  This week we covered some constructive criticism.  As a team, Kevin and Larry appreciate our listeners willingness to help out the show and to point out areas where we need a little adjustment. News: Ride to Work Day It’s Official, Harley Davidson will be at the AIMExpo, of course we broke the news weeks ago. Nuviz is out. Another sweep for Indian, and Harley back in 11,13, and 15. Nary a word as to why they are doing so badly. How can it be that the Harley team is doing so badly, even gets wiped out in one race, and I can’t find a single written word as to what is going on? Wow, this week was an interesting week in the motorcycle world.  Let’s dive into all the shenanigans. It wouldn’t be a Throttled episode if we didn’t quickly discuss out riding, Kevin took a quick Lunch ride to fine tune some action camera settings and Larry goes out on a club ride. Mail Call: Email from Darian News: Alpinestars brings it’s airbag system to the street. Zero motorcycles will give you a tax credit. Harley promises 100 new models in 10 years and some will be electric. CFMoto 650MT first ride. Top 10 Motorcycle Theft stats…for what it is worth.  Episode 082 : We demo the Indian lineup | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:32

Welcome back to this weeks episode of Throttled.  We had a great time with this little motorcycle podcast this week.  Both Kevin and Larry got some riding in, here are the details. Larry-Wednesday, 76 mile roundtrip to club meeting through traffic, Thursday ride to Talbott Motorcycle Museum in Castro Valley-a real treat! (280 round trip on Rever) Saturday, Poker run ride at Mt. Diablo H-D, another 160 or so. Great weather, beautiful roads, and a few other Switchbacks that I saw (2 others out of maybe 125 bikes) Brian Hunnicut invited me to a cornering class at the Little 99 raceway in Stockton, later this month, which I signed up for. Still having trouble imagining me circling the race track on my Harley Switchback. Could remove the windshield and bags, but I really think I want to practice with the bike as I usually ride it. Kevin was able to ride out and attend a local demo day for Indian this past week.  Here is what he rode and his impressions: Springfield Scout RoadMaster DarkHorse Springfield – same engine nice pull, comfortable ride easy to handle, not crazy about handlebar position for my size, same cramped riding position for those 5’11 and taller Scout – Doesn’t feel as small as it is, fun bike, instant power but sluggish top end. Hit the rev limiter earlier than I thought, Fun to ride handles great, wonderful around town or back road local ride bike. RoadMaster — much like the Springfield, liked the handlebar position much better since the bars were in front of me. Side Note – they had a Chieftain with Mini Apes, very comfortable to sit on, was able to take it around the block between rides and I liked the handle bar position the best, seemed to open up the cockpit for the upper body. DarkHorse – I liked this bike the best, Handling of the Springfield great feel, seemed to have a little more shake in the bike, not a ton just not as smooth at idle. Gave me more of a visceral connection to the bike. Ranking the bikes. Scout, DarkHorse, RoadMaster, Springfield After thought : Kevin would love to try a Darkhorse or RoadMaster with Mini Apes on a true test ride. Mail Call: Email from Thom Email from Scott New Patreon Supporter Please welcome James Providakes to the Throttled Crew!! Tyler we appreciate your support of the show, it means a lot.  He joins Tyler, Dayne, Tom, Chris, Paul, Micah, Jeff and Chuck.  Thank you all for becoming supporters of the show. News: EatSleepRide is putting on a large synchronized ride. Strider bikes put on a little youth compitetion. Of course we have another Ducati sale rumor. Harley Davidson and Eagle Rider form an alliance for US based rentals. The Honda CB650F is coming stateside in 2018 Yamaha might be revealing a new model at Americade. Review:

Episode 081 : Ace Cafe is opening soon!! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:41

We have a great episode for you guys and gals out there on the interwebs.  Thanks for listening and as always we start every show talking about our rides.  Kevin set out on a ride with the intent to ride new and awesome roads.  Uncharacteristically he succeeded in this task and had a near full day of riding (minus time to check out a movie).  Larry as always was able to get out for a ride on both his son’s Ducati and then  on his beloved Switchback. Mail Call: Email from Darian Email from Dave News: Which motorcycle brand has the best dealer network when it comes to customer satisfaction? Ace Café is set to open in Orlando May 10th.  Finally, somewhere to go in Orlando. BMW releases the 2018 R-NineT Urban GS. Jason Disalvo launches a riding school. HJC is making a Luke Skywalker X-Wing helmet. Royal Enfield has increased it’s dealer network to 50 dealers within a single year. 8 ways to spot motorcyclists. Topic: This a meaningless article, which nonetheless we have heard quoted elsewhere as evidence, among other things, that mandatory helmet laws are pointless since some of the states with the largest number of fatalities had mandatory helmet laws.  We don’t think the reporter meant to be deceptive, but rather displayed an amazing inability to critically review the article and see that the numbers cited are meaningless, as the author himself admitted in the 1st paragraph Paddock:. So, last week Larry was going to give a pre-race report on the 4th event in the MotoGP, the Spanish GP at Jerez in which many of the riders were complaining about tires and traction.  Well, the race is over now, and complaints about traction and tires are still prominent.  Although, to be fair, your not hearing them so much from Pedrosa and Marquez, who lined up 1-2 at the start of the race and finished in the same order. Jorge Lorenzo got his first podium, finishing 3rd after starting in the 3rd row along with Rossi and Vinales. Didn’t get a good start, but ran a brilliant race, passing the Yamaha riders, as well as Zarco after a brilliant battle to finish 3rd. Speaking of brilliant, I told you to watch out for Zarco. He ran a torrid first 1/2 of the race, moving up to 3rd place and pushing Marquez until he had to fall off lest he burn his tires to cinders, but still finishing a remarkable 4th.  Episode 080 : Do you love your motorcycle? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:14

Tonight the guys cover a wide array of topics, as always since they like to focus on riding that is were the show starts.  Both Kevin and Larry are able to get out some this week.  Kevin is able to snag a few lunch rides while Larry rides out with some friends. Mail Call: Email from Jeff Bell Email from Andy Facebook post by Jim Johns Email from Mike Retread : Kevin addresses his comments on KTM from last weeks show. News: Polaris releases their sales numbers. Is Ducati going to be up for sale soon? Motorcycles that are themed or inspired from cars. Fort Worth police are using dirt bikes for search and rescue. Harley statements following their earnings report. Here are three points mentioned: Incentives to dealers * Defaults on loans * Environmentally friendly-appeal to millennials, etc. Topic: Do you love your motorcycle?  We do and here is why? You know there are just those day’s where the riding is good, and then there are those days when the riding is great. Well once again we are here and we are going to start off by talking about some great motorcycle riding and shenanigans .  This week Kevin took a nice and diverse ride, while Larry met up with some friends for a ride.  Episode 078 : Should the US go to a tiered licensing system? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:49

Motorcycles are coming out of their hibernation all across the northern hemisphere.  We  hope you have been able to show your ride a little attention this past week.  Both Kevin and Larry were able to get our for nice rides and have big plans for next week.  Here we go as Kevin struggles with his voice. Mail Call: Email from Jeff. Email from Darian. News: Crum sentenced to 15 years. Motorcycling less stressful. Honda CB 1100 RS and EX. Ducati brings back the small monster. Giveaway: Don’t forget to send in your entry for our Ciro 3D giveaway/  Just send us an email with which part you want with Ciro 3d in the subject or body of the email. Topic: Should the US go to a tiered motorcycle license Related topic- Super Sport riders high fatality rate Effects of training and tiered and restricted licensing In brief, the studies generally differed in their findings. Some found modest effects for training, some not. In some the effects from training petered out after 6 months.   A more consistent finding was that trained riders used helmets and protective gear more. Another consistent was that longer restrictive periods resulted in riders with fewer accidents. None of the systems reviewed however included limitations on displacement. European tiered system explained. Whew! In brief, there are 3 classes of license: AM for the youngest riders (ages vary by country, 15 up) and the smallest displacements (mopeds <50cc). Mandatory theory and traffic law classes, and optional skills testing. Helmets required. Can’t carry passengers unless over 18 A1 goes to 125 cc and/or certain power to weight ratio’s). Must pass two theory and two practicals A2 requires 2 years from a1, 4 tests also, or only the practicals if you have a1, about 50% larger engines or double the horsepower bikes with restrictors on them. Full A, minimal progressive age from 20 years and direct to 24 years. No power limitation. These were based on research studies of past statistics. Riders who studied theory, who took at least 2 years to progress had fewer accidents and deaths, and of course, mandatory helmet for driver and passenger.  Episode 077 : Indian unveils two new models | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:57

If you want to talk about motorcycles, this show is for you.  Thanks for listening and as always we start off with what kind of riding Larry and Kevin got in this week.  Kevin grabbed a quick ride one day but Larry decided to head up to Hollister to get himself and his bike blessed. Mail Call: Email from Jeff Email from Dave Review: Motorcycling Alabama Book Initial review/Frist ride with the Shoei Hornet X2 (Seeker) Updated review of the Mitas Dakar E07 News: Indian announces the Elite and Limited models. Bobbers selling like hotcakes? Kevin goes off on this msn article about looking like an amateur. Recalls: Yamaha recalls the FJ-09, FZ-09 and XSR900 for handlebar issues. Topic: When or why people are downsizing? Paddock: MotoGP After Marquez, Abraham (surprise from non team ducati) and cal Crutchlow on non team honda took the 1st 3 position sin qualifying, the actual race told a different story. Maverick Vignales started in second row but ran another strong race and finished 1st again, with Rossi, who started in 3rd row, ran a brilliant race, beating out Crutchlow in a hard fought race for second. Crutchlow came in 3rd and Marquez unfortunately crashed out and did not finish. Zarco who I mentioned in the 1st race as making a good showing for a newbie, came in a very commendable 5th Special Thanks: A big thank you to Dayne, Tom, Chris, Paul, Micah, Jeff and Chuck.  Thank you all for becoming supporters of the show.  Episode 076 : Indians future plans, CHIPS impressions and a new giveaway | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:34

Wow, This turned into one great show.  As always we start off our motorcycle podcast by talking about riding them.  While Larry only got out on a short ride, he was able to travel up to Tahoe to hear his sons’ band play.  Kevin on the other hand was able to get in around 160 miles over the weekend, he had plans for more but decided to not travel down gravel roads in the middle of nowhere alone. Movie Review: CHIPS – Kevin was able to catch the movie CHIPS, overall he recommends you not pay to see it by yourself unless crude humor is what you enjoy, however the riding and motorcycles are really where this movie shines. New Giveaway: This week we welcome a new sponsor Ciro 3D.  As part of this announcement we are giving away several of their products. To enter send us an email with the subject of Ciro3D, tell us which part you want and we will put you in the drawing. News: There is a lot to learn from this video of a motorcycle accident.  Lot’s of issues with the rider and the car that pulled over.  No word on the rider, he seemed to be ok but we aren’t sure.  Just a cautionary reminder for you all to be careful and look out for each other. Mail Call: Email from Ken News Continued: Another electric possibility? 3d printed, no less. BrakeFree helmet Brake Light. Need a motorcycle steering wheel, April Fools Interesting interview with Steve Menneto, President of motorcycles at Polaris. High points are: * Anticipating that Indian will come out with more modern styled bikes to appeal to younger riders. * Indian will continue the race programs of Victory, including Isle of Man TT and Pike’s peak * Indian will be coming out with a new electric bike designed more for cruising than commuting * Indian plans to expand into other markets such as far East and Europe with new, smaller displacement bikes * Indian plans to design bikes based on their experience with smaller V-twin such as their flat racer, but not the actual bike itself as it is a race only model. Paddock: Another 1-2 for Indian. Bryan smith this time over Jarod Mees. Harley factory 6th. The older Harley xr750r non factory harley did finish 3rd, ridden by Sammy Halbert. Readers comments suggest the new factory Harley’s don’t have enough power to compete with the Indians. Kenny Coolberth finished 6th in the factory Harley xg750r.  More info on the results. Motogp is in Argentina next weekend for the 2nd race of the season. Topic: Will technology take the joy out of motorcycle riding or eliminate it entirely?
