The honeymoon is over and our worst fears were confirmed as an impressive Liverpool all but swept Chelsea aside in the first half. Chelsea fought back but the damage was done and we lost our first game of the campaign and the first defeat for new manager Conte. All the fears over the squad that finished 10th last season came back to haunt us and it looks like it will take much guile and expertise from Il Capo to turn the ship around. Chelsea left it late for the second game in a row this season snatching victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy of a debut goal from Batshuayi and Costa. It was déjà vu with Costa netting the winner having been lucky not get a second yellow and his marching orders, just like against West Ham. But do we care? Not a bit. Conte’s subs fitted like the natty cap he sported during the game, Fabregas patently making the difference with a superb pass for Costa’s goal. But it begs the question why not start with the dynamic duo up front and Fabregas behind? One thing is for certain, ‘Il Capo’ has a midfield conundrum to solve. Chelsea kicked of their season last night with Diego Costa burying a late winner against West Ham London. Cue scenes, but most of all from new Manager Antonio Conte. How fantastic to see such passion from our manager – something evidently lacking from a certain individual last season. In some respects it was a case of déjà vu. Loads of chances created but not being clinical enough; Hazard back to his mercurial best; Costa misbehaving and incurring the wrath of a crazed media. But, so good to get off to a winning start. I for one wish the applauding of Leicester players and their goal had never happened – another poor indictment of modern football and its fans. What a great away trip Bournemouth was – sun, sea and drinking with some great mates all day and for once the football didn’t get in the way of a good day out, with Chelsea cantering to a 4-1 win – or did they? In spite of the alcohol infused warm glow of victory, the nagging doubt remains that Bournemouth had their towel laid out on the sun lounger slightly ahead of Chelsea. Oh well at least Hazard scored for the first time in the league this season and the players were left with no doubt about the importance of beating Spurs next week.
