In 1976, Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky in 3 days after watching a virtual unknown (Chuck Wepner) go the distance with Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight boxing championship. Wepner lost via TKO in the final round but was never expected to last past the first few rounds with Ali.Rocky was produced on a budget of just over $1 Million dollars and was shot in 28 days. It would go on to earn over $225 Million and won the award for Best Picture at the Oscars. It would then go on to spawn a series of sequels that would turn the Rocky franchise into an integral part of Americana and a beloved movie by so many.I have watched the Rocky movies countless times and they never bore me. They inspire me and each film has many lessons that apply to both business and life.In the original film, Rocky is a street thug and aged boxer. Lacking direction, he finds himself working for a loan shark and stripped of his locker at Mickey’s gym in Philadelphia where he trained for years. Then, by virtue of his nickname, the Italian Stallion and a stroke of luck, Apollo Creed offers him a shot at the heavyweight boxing championship. Rocky would go on to lose a split decision but inspired many by going the distance and setup a part 2 rematch.The first film has several corollaries that we can draw upon for our own lives and businesses. First is that no matter your age, opportunity is out there. Secondly, creativity gets noticed. Apollo Creed picked Rocky Balboa to fight him because of the nickname he had, the Italian Stallion. Third, even when you lose, you gain ground.In part 2, Apollo Creed demands a rematch because he is embarrassed that Rocky had nearly defeated him and wanted to avenge the fight with a dominating 2nd performance. In the classic final scene, Rocky beats the bell by 1 second after both fall to the canvas in a rare double knock down.In this film, we see the power of relationships and how they affect our lives. Throughout the film, Adrian, the wife of Rocky, is not supportive of a 2nd match with Creed and he trains poorly and without effort. Once Adrian approves the match, Rocky develops new found inspiration and skill. This is the “why” factor we hear so much about in business.In part 3, Rocky loses his manager Mickey to death and Apollo Creed returns to train Rocky in his bid to defeat Clubber Lang after a devastating loss; demonstrating to us all that even when we are on top, we can fall, but we are not defeated.In the final movie, Rocky returns to the ring one last time to fight Mason Dixon in an exhibition match as an aged fighter. This film delivered one of the most memorable scenes of the franchise – “Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! That’s how winning is done!”Rocky will transcend generations because it is the perfect metaphor for life!
