21: Quit Your Job and Travel the World with Entrepreneur & Traveler Jake Lau | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:08

You owe it to the universe, for giving you the lottery winnings, to do something exceptional and travel.” - Jake Lau The Bucket List Life Podcast #21 - Entrepreneur and World Traveler Jake Lau If we take a moment to comprehend how fortunate we are in this life to be listening to this podcast, to have a smart phone, iPad or computer, to entertain the ideas of business and travel, then we can start to appreciate that we are amongst the most privileged in the world and we are constantly surrounded by opportunity. Our next guest on episode #21 of The Bucket List Life has an inspiring story to share of seizing every opportunity presented before him in full appreciation and recognition of the treasures in life he’s been given. Jake Lau was born and raised Washington DC, currently living in Phoenix, Arizona. At the age of 27 years old, Jake quit his high profile position with PricewaterhouseCoopers and decided to travel around the world for 18 months while he had the opportunity. His travels included a road trip across the USA, hiking Kilimanjaro and backpacking through Nepal, Europe and New Zealand. Jake uses all of the lessons he has learned in his incredible travel experiences today as a successful startup entrepreneur and business owner of the only Chinese gourmet food truck in Arizona, Hoa Boa. Highlights from their conversation: 3:00 Having met through a mutual friend on Facebook, Kenyon and Jake never really connected until after Kenyon started The Bucket List Life. Jake says that the draw to find out more about The Bucket List Life was the impetus and momentum it was building. 5:15 Jake starts off talking about traveling for 18 months and how highly educational and mind blowing an experience it was. Jake then takes us way back to describe how he came to develop his sense and thirst for adventure from a very young age and then end up working for PricewaterhouseCoopers. 13:30 Jake describes the biggest factor in deciding that he needed to make a change in his current career position was the realization that he needed more adventure and excitement in his life. 17:00 Jake breaks down his thought process defining his professional career and his next chapter of life, post graduation and the limited window of opportunity he for travel and adventure, according to life’s prescribed plan. 23:30 Jake describes how his original jam packed adventure of a lifetime began with a four month, cross-country road trip. He describes all of the lessons he learned of the constant need for flexibility, adaptability, endurance and budgeting for the unknown. When planning a trip, only plan 20-30% of it, the important parts, the obligatory stops. Make the rest of your trip and your time about the people you meet, your surroundings, exploration and in the ambience of your travels. 34:15 Jake talks about building relationships in his travels and the dozens of people he had connected with around the world. He highly recommends that getting to know the people in your travels add so much color and graphic definition to an experience. 39:15 Jake talks about how fortunate we all are if we have the ability to buy a smart phone, or a car, or go to school then we have already won the human lottery. There is very little that we really have to lose. The fact that we can even entertain the option of traveling, gives us all the riches of the world. You owe it to the universe, for giving you the lottery winnings, to do something exceptional and travel. 43:30 Jake tells us what happened when he came back from his travels of more than 18 months. He needed two months to just reflect, adjust and take in the mind blowing, horizon exploding experience of a lifetime.  17: The Drive to Survive with Extreme Para-Athlete Lonnie Bissonnette | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:06

“I can’t believe I just survived all of that, and now I am going to drown, literally inches from life….The only thing I thought about at that moment was that I can’t die because… my kids need me, you know.” - Lonnie Bissonnette The Bucket List Life Podcast #17 - Extreme Para-Athlete Lonnie Bissonnette (https://thebucketlistlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/17-Lonnie-Bissonnette.jpg)Extreme Para-Athlete Lonnie Bissonnette When life throws down the gauntlet and you are given the choice to fight for your life or surrender, what drives you to keep going and overcome any obstacle to survive? What does it mean to be an inspiration to others? Today’s incredibly humble guest on The Bucket List Life Podcast Episode #17 is highly respected, admired by his peers and a true inspiration to many. He is an inspiration because of his ability to overcome the challenges that life has thrown in his path with stubborn drive and an uncommon willingness to go the extra distance to make things happen. Lonnie Bissonnette has been friends with Kenyon in the BASE and skydiving community for well over a decade. Lonnie is an elite extreme athlete from Canada and he has some amazing and, yes, incredibly inspiring stories to share about “the accident” that changed everything and the challenges he has faced and overcome in his remarkable life. And living through all of that really helped cement the “never give up” attitude that you need to just keep putting one step forward, put your head down and keep going.” 23:00 After 1,500 sky dives and 14 years in the sport, Lonnie begins to tell us the most heart stopping and extra-ordinary story of “the Accident” that happened while trying to set a new Canadian record on his 1,100 BASE jump, that changed his life forever. With painful detail, Lonnie shares exactly what happened after his 70mph instantaneous impact with the water and the bottom of the river. 30:30 His thoughts that fuelled his drive to survive while lying 10 feet under water, paralyzed, “The only thing I thought about at that moment was that I can’t die because… my kids need me, you know.” 31:00 After struggling to the surface, without the use of his arms or legs, and taking in a small gasp of air, with what felt like a gallon of water, and sinking back down, completely exhausted, Lonnie thought, “I can’t believe I just survived all of that, and now I am going to drown, literally inches from life.” 37:00 Lonnie talks about the difficult process of accepting the reality that he had suffered a spinal cord injury, he was paralyzed and would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. 40:15 Lonnie shares with us his amazing inspiration to start jumping again and how his son was the one that initiated his incredible comeback to the sport of skydiving. Exploding with pride, Lonnie jumped out of a plane for the first time since the accident, for his son’s first skydive. “As we left the airplane and front flipped out, I looked over at my son and he had his tongue sticking out and he’s giving me the thumbs up yelling, Yeeeew! At that moment all of my fears and doubts where gone. He’s fine, he’s gonna be great!” 46:15 Lonnie talks about his first BASE jump back after “the accident”. “This is not something I want to do, this is something I need to do. I need for myself to do at least one more BASE jump, to prove to myself that the sport didn’t beat me.”

As half stylist, half psychologist, Milena describes how great it feels to inspire people to see themselves differently and help change their lives. “The clothes that we wear are a reflection of who we are and how we feel inside.  13: Flying Through the Transitions of Life with Paragliding Instructor Danielle Kinch | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:14

“Life Transitions are scary but everything in life worth fighting for is difficult and you have to go thru the pain and the heartache to get to the other side again. It’s all the trial and tribulations in life that help you to figure out who you are.” - Danielle Kinch The Bucket List Life Podcast Episode #13 -  Paragliding Instructor Danielle Kinch On the road of life, with all of the peaks and valleys, twists and turns it can be challenging to navigate on our journey alone.  The important thing to remember is that we each have our own individual path and that no one’s road is flat or straight.  Throughout all transitions in life, those that find their way after having been lost would almost all agree that some of the most traumatizing events that happen in our lives are the best things that happen in our lives. Today’s guest on lucky number 13 of The Bucket List Life Podcast is an adventurous, courageous and powerful female force of nature.  She has been paragliding for the past 7 years and has travelled to 15 plus countries with the sport. With over 2,000 successful flights in her life and reaching the podium in competition, she now teaches 100’s of students as an Instructor at Torrey Pines Gliderport Flight School in La Jolla, California. She is a business savvy feminine tomboy that has lots to share about overcoming the curve balls of life. Highlights from their podcast conversation: 6:00     Danielle talks about growing up as a physical, courageous and typical tomboy and how she also embraces her femininity and can flip the switch from a rough and dirty paragliding instructor to a lady in only moments in the gliderport washroom. 9:00     Danielle says that people are her passion and although she went to school for sociology, Kenyon and her both agree that the airport is the best possible place to people watch and study people from all walks of life in their full dynamics of the human emotions. 10:45   Danielle’s life plan out of university was to get married and have children. With the family support and encouragement, being a mom was the only thing that she knew that she wanted in life. She married the man of her dreams and after that her marriage fell apart, her dreams and aspirations quickly disintegrated. Her new life plan? “Oh shit!” “To walk away from someone you love, from every depth of your soul, is the most challenging and hardest thing for me to do personally.  But just because you can love someone to those depths, doesn’t mean that it’s healthy or self-serving.” 16:45   Kenyon acknowledges this scary place of being in between life plans.  When you think you know the road you are on and find yourself not only on the wrong road, but lost.  A lot of people really fear this place.  Danielle acknowledges that “it was scary but everything in life worth fighting for is difficult and you have to go through the pain and the heartache to get to the other side again. It’s all the trial and tribulations in life that help you to figure out who you are.” 17:30   Danielle clarifies how paragliding had been a hobby and a passion of hers before she met her husband, but it’s not until after her divorce that she thought about turning her passion in to a career. 19:00   In trying to figure out her new life plan, Danielle realized the importance of not putting all her eggs in one basket and having a Plan B.  She spent a year as a student, learning to instruct in paragliding, and also completed her Yoga Instructor Certification. 28:00   Danielle explains the importance of site analysis and a self analysis before a flight and how it plays a role in our decision making process. Taking a step outside of yourself and being able to take a look at a situation analytically, whether it’s before a flight or in life, isn’t easy for everyone.  Being able to analyze all aspects of the spectrum, takes a lot of practice but it’s an important aspect in avoiding potential hazards and fatal complacency.

12: Brand Your Passion with Entrepreneur Dave Collier | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:08

“Everyone has something unique to offer that they can do and materialize in their life.  Find your passion and follow it.” - Dave Collier The Bucket List Life Podcast #12 -  Entrepreneur Dave Collier The utopian idea of loving what you do and doing what you love seems almost a fantasy for some people.  For some of us struggling through a mundane work week that is unfulfilling and draining, it can be challenging to see the road to get to where you love Mondays again.  Today’s podcast episode # 12 of The Bucket List Life, is with an ex-Pro Snowboarder who decided to follow his passion and go down that scary road in pursuit of his dreams. Dave Collier took his fun experiences in life and designed a lifestyle brand around what he knows and loves. He is now a successful entrepreneur running a print shop called Ink Floyd out of Charlotte, North Carolina. His business endeavors have thrived because he was driven, focused and believed in what he was doing. He also has a great story behind his brand and he actively promotes his customers in social media.  Dave shares some great advice and insight  with Kenyon about how he turned his passion and his lifestyle into a successful brand and business. Highlights from their podcast conversation: 3:30     Kenyon wants to know how Dave typically starts his day.  Dave wakes up each and every morning with an “attitude of gratitude” and starts his day with a positive vibe right out of bed. 6:30     Dave talks about how he transitioned from skateboarding into snowboarding with his brother JJ back in the day, and then went on to become a sponsored athlete and travelled around the world pursing his passion. 12:00   Kenyon and Dave compare their amazing travel and cultural experiences in visiting, living, snowboarding and competing in Japan. 17:30   Dave talks about life after his snowboarding career, how he never really fit into the corporate game and eventually got that entrepreneurial spasm that told him to get out and start something for himself.  Don’t let fear stop you from taking that first step and taking a  chance. Have a plan of attack and lay the ground work. 19:45   Dave shares how his first entrepreneurial venture, Saturday Skateboards, was conceived out of the desire to follow his passion and create a lifestyle brand. Running on instinct, he strived to be different by designing an “un-professional series” and focusing on the cool factor of the whole brand. 25:00   Kenyon points out the importance of telling and individuals story when branding. “People don’t buy products, they buy the people or the brand or the story behind the product.” 26:00   Dave talks about the success of Ink Floyd and how it came about from Saturday Skateboards. 28:15   Kenyon wants to know, “How important is passion in the success with these brands?”.  Dave says it was all about trying to create his own fun working environment and brand where he can also help his customers stand out in a crowd. 31:00   Dave and Kenyon agree that not everyone realizes that being a successful entrepreneur means that you have to be willing to where a lot of different hats in the beginning.  It requires a lot of work, focus, tenacity and believing in yourself and what you are doing.  There are always going to be challenges that put you into survival mode and sometimes you have to battle unsurmountable odds that put stress on your business and family life, in pursuit of your passion. 36:00   Why are entrepreneurs willing to take bigs risks in life?  Dave suggests that if you are not happy with what you are doing and looking forward to Monday then the greater risk is that you are not living the authentic life you were meant to. 40:00   Kenyon acknowledges that the magic sauce in Ink Floyd is that “they always try to be more”.  Dave agrees that what he really tries to drive home with his team is that “they are only as good as their brand experience.”  “Everyday should be Saturday!”
