Grizzly Kiki | Pop Culture & Interviews With Queer Artists

Summary: Grizzly Kiki began in April 2014 as a pop culture and drag-centric podcast hosted by Robert Lechuga & Daniel Silva. We launched with recaps of RuPaul’s Drag Race and other reality programming. Shortly after releasing the first few episodes, we narrowed our focus to create a podcast that was unique in concept and would serve a community near and dear to us: DRAG QUEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The podcast is equal parts oral history and good old-fashioned kiki. We found that there were few platforms where Drag and Nightlife Artists could talk about their art and themselves in an open and honest way. Most of what is known about these artists comes from videos posted on the Internet or what they experience in bars and clubs. It was clear that there were stories to be told and shared with the world. Our mission is to create a comfortable and safe environment, where these artists can share their histories and experiences. Ours is a podcast that is meant to serve the drag and nightlife community by capturing the artists’ voices and making them available to the public. Grizzly Kiki is a program for drag enthusiasts, Drag Artists, and everyone in between. Listen and Join the Party!!

Elle Emenopé | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Elle Emenopé is a multi-talented artist who defies the traditional definitions and boundaries of Drag Artistry, instead choosing the title "Gender Artist." On her website, Elle explains how her unique approach to drag developed: “I began becoming very frustrated with drag because it didn’t make sense in my mind for an art form that is supposed to be freeing and breaking the rules has now become a codified “drag queen” with specific parameters of right and wrong, dos and don’ts, and choosing an identity that you actually become stuck in. “ With every look she turns out and high-concept performances that she produces in New York, Provincetown, and other cities, Elle challenges the Drag status quo. She is a stunning creature that enters every room, bar, and cabaret with the elegance of a panther and an explosion of colors. Elle is changing the landscape of drag by breaking it down and building it back up. Listen to our interview and get to know the charming individual also known as "A Boy Named Elle."

Lots of Britney.   Listeners Beware: Rants Ahead.

Dissecting Divas: Madonna VS. Lady GaGa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:10

On "Dissecting Divas," we focus on breaking down the powerful and influential women that have inspired drag queens and gays alike. Every episode will feature a queen who is an "expert" in the field of Diva-ology and who will help us get to the core of what has made these women iconic figures in the gay community. Sherry Vine joins us for the inaugural episode of "Dissecting Divas." A queen who specializes in making parodies of pop music, she was the perfect person to discuss Madonna & Lady Gaga's influence on Drag Queens and why they can co-exist in spite of their supposed feuding.

 Maci Sumcox | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:54

There is a historical legend that needs rectifying - Paul Revere did not shout "The British are coming!"    However, if he had, he would never have been prepared to battle against the charm and grace of Maci Sumcox. After over two hundred years of independence, the United States has once again been colonized by the English. This time, it is in the form of a plus size drag queen diva. Maci arrived on our shores about a year ago with her drag husband and #1 fan, Ed.    Maci is an expert female illusionist and drag queen who combines British wit and congeniality with the art of drag to create her character. She is larger than life, with a collection of wigs and clothing so large that it requires its own storage unit; MissSumcox rarely likes to repeat a look anytime within a 3 month period. This level of decadence is a key element of Maci's drag, which is polished and sumptuous - you will never see ripped fishnets on this girl and she embraces every curve and swerve that her mama gave her.

Gateway Drag: Showgirls | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:28

Twenty years ago, "Showgirls," the big budget highly-anitcipated blockbuster film premiered and proved to be an enormous financial flopped. It won a record seven Razzies, made less than it cost to make, became a symbol of misogyny, and was deemed the worst movie ever made. In spite of its commercial failings, the film became a cult classic almost overnight. It's unintentional high camp factor - due in large part to Dutch director Paul Verhoven's ideas of what  an American audience would want to see - guaranteed it a coveted place among the pantheon of Midnight Movies. It is currently in good company, with fellow camp classics such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Hocus Pocus." "Clueless," and "Mommie Dearest." Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon's performances are pure art. As a result, "Showgirls" has left an indelible mark on movie history and gay/drag culture.Joining us to discuss the importance of the worst film ever made is former Grizzly KiKi guest, Peaches Christ. An accomplished Drag Queen, performer, and filmmaker, she has embraced all that "Showgirls" has to offer. She has also probably seen it more times than anyone else in the world. Only a few years after the films release, she began screening the film and has made it a yearly event ever since, complete with a live pre-show, where the films' infamous scenes are recreated.Peaches will be hosting the 18th Annual Night of 1,000 Showgirls at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco on August 8. The event will feature a pre-show starring Alaska Thunderfuck as Nomi Malone, followed by a screening of the film.

Alaska Thunderfuck: ANUS | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:38

Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 is the Queen of Chakras!! In fact, ANUS, her first full-length album, is based on her study of chakras and takes you on a journey from bottom to top, with songs such as Anus, Pussy, Beard, and This Is My Hair. ANUS is a a direct reflect of Alaska's personality - dramatic, over the top, and fun!!! We here at Grizzly KiKi can't stop listening  to it, especially when we're in our car. Blasting Pussy or This Is My Hair as we're speeding down the highway is the ultimate in Decadence!!!   We also discuss Alaska's support for trans rights and equality, as highlighted in her song Pussy. She stands firm behind her lyrics: I Love Hearts, Not Parts.   In the lyrics for Pussy, Alaska sings about her love of "The Golden Girls," which was also mentioned in her recent show, "The Gayest Show You've Ever Seen." Performing alongside her friend, Handsome Jeremy, Miss 5000 went on a riff about her obsession with the show and its importance in her friendship with Jeremy. She even claimed that if there were a "Golden Girls" trivia competition, she would win!!!

"Feel Like A Lady" is where we sit down with a Queen to discover what brings their persona to life.  Jeff Poulin | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:46

Compared to previous Grizzly KiKi guests, Jeff Poulin is a Queen of a different color. In fact, he doesn't consider himself to be a Drag Queen at all. Instead, Jeff, who uses his given name as his "Stage" name, falls into a gray area under the "Drag" umbrella. As he chooses to keep his beard when in face, it is quite easy to put him in the niche of "Bearded Queens." In 2014, he graced the cover of Next Magazine's State of Drag Issue, which proclaimed 2014 the "Year Of The Bearded Queen." However, Jeff is far more than a bearded queen.Mr./Ms. Poulin is a beautiful and ethereal creature of the night - a cross between a superhuman androgynous beauty queen and, occasionally, an aging biker mom. His looks are well-curated combinations of couture and vintage pieces, thrift store finds, and DIY elements. His beauty and immaculately manicured facial hair is truly a sight to behold that will confuse and entice anyone who encounters him.As Next Magazine so succinctly put it, he is a "Fuzzy-Faced Femme Fatale." Listen to our wonderfully insightful interview Jeff and then check outhis custom jewelry collection, Thou Art Uncouth.

Cher Is Dead & Drag Queens Are Missing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:59

On this episode:   Daniel and Robert discuss the recent buzz surrounding Drag Queens missing from social media and gigs just in time for Drag Race filming; Who's missing and where did they go? Give Shangela a call and have her activate her Nancy Drew Powers to help you out.    Also, the National Enquirer is claiming that Cher is dying, but she's live tweeting while on vacation in Turkey. Check out her Twitter feed for some light and hilarious reading!   A lifeguard in North Carolina inadvertently caused a stir by putting a rainbow flag at his station during the 4th of July. Some beachgoers claimed they thought that meant he would only save drowning homosexuals. In other flag news - a gun club in Oklahama uses the rainbow flag for target practice and CNN mistakes a Pride Flag for an ISIS Flag.   On July 10, we went to Courtney Act's Kaleidoscope Cabarave at the Gramercy Theatre featuring Willam Belli and special guest, Alaska Thunderfuck!!

 Sister Roma | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:00

On this episode, Robert & Daniel interview "The Most Photographed Nun In The World," Sister Roma. A member of the San Francisco-based organization The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Roma has been associated with the Order for twenty-eight years. During that time, she has made it her life's work to promote the Order's mission of community involvement, charity, and furthering civil rights.   During our interview with Roma, we learned about her childhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She grew up in a loving family, but with very little gay culture around her. It was during a trip to San Francisco that she fell in love with the city and eventually ended up moving there for good after college. It was here that she first encountered the Sisters, as a close friend of hers was a member. Starting out as a volunteer, Roma slowly realized that social work and community involvement was her calling and, within six months, had become a full-fledged member of the Order. She adopted the iconic white-face makeup, feathers, and habit that distinguish the Sisters from all other Drag Queens. They are not Queens who just perform or are involved with the art form; they are social justice warriors in drag.   Listen to our interview to find out all about The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Sister Roma, and her ultimate fantasy, which left us speechless!!
