 Back2Us Show_The Power of Friendship | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:00

We have all seen the quotes and memes about friendship.  Even the Mayo Clinic published an article about the impact of healthy friendships on your life"Good friends are good for your health. Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friends prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer needed companionship, too" (Mayo Clinic, 2014).   Friendships are easy to create; but, like a relationship they take work to maintain.  Today, we are going to talk about our friendship over the past decade! We have had disagreements (like the time we bought furniture at IKEA but Sharon didn't want the boxes in her truck), we have had weeks where we were so upset with each other that we would only text or Instant Message but wouldn't speak; and, we have had times when the pain was so deep all we could do is simply sit beside each other without any words.  So pull up a chair, grab an iced chai tea latte, and get ready to dive inside our mind as we talk about not just our friendship over the past decade but also friendships that have really impacted us--both good and bad.

Community Connections The Lesbian Lounge | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:00

When Sharon and I launched The Back2Us Show in March 2013, we did what any good new nerdy, geeky female brand new podcasters would do...we bought every Amazon Kindle book we could find on podcasting, spent hours studying just the right formula to make our podcast successful, enrolled in every continuing education course we could find on platform development, and of course those of you who have been with us from the beginning know that we didn't do ANY of these things but what we did find on our journey was another lesbian owned and created podcast hosted by Denise and her long time best friend Donna.  I purposely waited until after we had hit our 3 month mark of the Back2Us Show and then I began listening to their episodes.  I still remember calling Sharon and screaming "OMG I HAVE FOUND TWO MORE OF US!!"  Denise and Donna are the hosts of the longest running (now international) podcast called The Lesbian Lounge powered by MyLesbianRadio.com (http://www.mylesbianradio.com) and they were recently featured on LGBTicons (http://lgbticons.com/2014/04/02/the-lesbian-lounge-with-denise-donna/)--the hottest trending LGBT Lifestyle Blog that profiles LGBT people of significant achievement, those that have championed equality for all and individuals that have impacted positively on the lives of LGBT people.   Today, I will have the opportunity to talk one on one with Denise and discuss as we reflect on our journey of living our life passions with our best friends by our side.

Teko's Corner- The Myths About Androgyny. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:58:00

The Myths About Androgyny With Nikki Eason and Vjay.  Androgyny is a gender identity that is distinct from the sex of the body. It is not biological nor is it synonymous with sexual behavior, nor necessarily indicative of sexual preference” (Woodhill & Samuels, 2004). It attempts to defy the traditional gender roles that men and women are assigned since birth. Sex is the inherent biological difference between men and women’s reproductive organs whereas gender is learned as social, psychological, and cultural traits associated with one sex or the other (Bond, 2011). Androgyny attempts to blur the lines between traditional gender roles and to combine masculine and feminine traits in order for a person to reach an ideal state. But this basic definition must necessarily be qualified by recognizing the diverse forms of androgyny. who embodies male and female qualities but must “split” to become creative; a “fusing androgyne,” who must merge with a male or female side of the personality to become bisexual; and a “two in one” androgyne, often represented by a couple that unites in a perfect love. Tonight, on Teko's Corner, guests Nikki Eason and Vjay will join us to share their journey and to dispel some of the myths about androgyny.

Community Connections_ Understanding and Preventing Caregiver Burnout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:45:00

As a parent of a daughter with Schizoaffective Disorder, a son with speech/language delays, a partner with MS, and a father in the later stages of Alzheimer's not to mention I am dealing with CIDP, I can say that I have experienced caregiver burnout.   According to WebMd, Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude -- from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don't get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able -- either physically or financially. Caregivers who are "burned out" may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression. Many caregivers also feel guilty if they spend time on themselves rather than on their ill or elderly loved ones. Today, LAPC Song James and acclaimed autor Marion D. Cohen will join me to talk about the very real challenges that caregivers face but no one wants to talk about.   Marion Deutsche Cohen is the author of 23 books, prose and poetry. Besides the two well spouse memoirs, two most recent ones are CROSSING THE EQUAL SIGN, poetry about the experience of and her passion for math (from Plain View Press, TX) and PARABLES FOR A RAINY DAY (poetry chapbook from Green Fuse Press. She is well known in certain communities for her writings on bereaved parenthood, well-spouse-hood, and math. She teaches math and writing at Arcadia University (the old Beaver) in Glenside PA, where she has developed the course, Mathematics in Literature. Marion's latest spouse memoir: http://www.amazon.com/Still-End-Memoir-Nursing-Home-ebook/product-reviews/B00FEX2V9Q/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1   Link to a wonderful article on caregiver burnout: http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/thepulse/item/66876-caring-for-caregivers-when-their-lives-feel-a-bit-like-war-?linktype=dst_share
