On August 13, 2013, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a controversial bill into law that allows the state's transgender public school students to choose which bathroom they want to use and if they want to participate in boys or girls sports.  Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado have all adopted policies designed to protect transgendered pupils; but, California is the first state to write a law.   What happened in California is great; but, the reality is we need more...more awarenes, more advocacy, more support for each other.   Tune in as we talk one on one with Neo Sandja, CEO of FTM Fitness World; Eli Strong, star of the National Geographic series American Transgender; and, the voice the TransGriot blog, Monica Roberts about their journey.  We will also talk with ground breaking director Teresa Dowell Vest and leading actor Tajir Hawkins on his role in the upcoming movie Shirts vs. Skins as well as feature music by The Sexual Side Effects.

 Back2UsShow_Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:00

It's that time of year when everyone is on the hunt for the school supply list, the teacher wish list; and, that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle backpack that Target had online but can't locate in the store (oh wait, that's MY challenge at the moment).  Seriously, this time of year for many is filled with excitement but for children who learn differently and their parents--there is often very little to be excited about as the fights about homework resume.   According to a 2010 report from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, nearly 2.4 million students are diagnoised with LD and receive special education services in schools.   For parents trying to navigate this educational maze to obtain help for their child, it  is often described as the equivilent of attempting to climb Mt. Everest in flipflops.   What do you need to know to advocate effectively for your child? What is an IEP?  Who is eligible for a 504 plan? Is there really a difference between a 504 Plan and an IEP? What are the first steps in the IEP process? Does it really speed up the process to get your child tested outside of the school system? What are some types of things you as a parent or guardian can ask to have included in the IEP?  We're going to cover all of this and more!  If you have a child that you believe may need extra help in school to thrive then this show is for you!  We will have Licensed Psychologist Dr. Arcella Trimble as our guest to help navigate the waters on Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents and Guardians.

Back2UsShow_Quarterly Reflections with Doc and Sharon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:00

So it's been a long time since it was just the two of us...with only a mic between us and our listeners.  What an amazing week this has been as Back2Us Radio launched its first full week of scheduling! I spent the majority of last night crying as the realization of what we had accomplished began to sink in.  Give away that what you need the most...when a friend said that to me last year, I was literally sitting on the floor of my guest bathroom and my life was disintegrating before my eyes. I remember thinking "What do I need the most?"  My brain began responding with one word answers like SUPPORT, UNDERSTANDING, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, ACCEPTANCE, HEALING, SISTERHOOD...give away that what you need the most.  Listen in tonight as Sharon and I are going to talk honestly about our struggle, our hopes, and how we feel watching something we started become a movement that is bringing healing in our community.

 Back2UsShow_Lesbians After Marriage (LAM) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:00

Jennifer Baumgardner, in the September 2007 edition of The Advocate magazine created awareness for a not-so-new-phenomen women who were once married with kids but leave their marriages for a woman after their children become more independent.  These women, knows as Lesbians After Marriage or LAM are defined as " the women who have tied the knot, procreated, and, once the children are out of the home or more independent, found love in the arms of a woman." Coming out is hard; but, coming out after marriage (or for many while still married) brings a whole new set of challenges.  This Sunday, is "kitchen table topic ".  We are going to give our listeners an opportunity to "sit" with us as talk about our experiences as either being a LAM or dating a LAM or choosing not to date a LAM. For many LAMs, this decision costs them more than they  could ever imagine.  So why do women who are lesbians get married to men in the first place?  And what about those women who choose to live a heterosexual life during the week but on the weekend, they become a "weekend lesbian". We will feature music by the talented Tabetha Durham.  Recorded with the bands Shallow Water  and the Forrest McDonald Blues.  She recently sang with Frisky Monkey ..on their latest CD "Involved but not Committed". Join us Sunday as we once again go live and get real!
