Wolfman Jack, Reverend Ike, Goat Glands, and More! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:29:55

Border Blasters: Powerful radio stations located on the U.S.-Mexico border from the 1930's to the 1960's. The interesting history of some of these stations and how they came into being is told on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site. Mike, Smitty, and Ian welcome back regular contributor Mike Z, who has all of the details of this fascinating subject. These powerful stations, such as XERB, XERF, XENT, XEAW, and others, which could blanket all of the United States at night, were operated by individuals offering all manner of medical cures for whatever ailed a person: sexual dysfunction, cancer, and a whole host of other ills. Unable to obtain licenses in the U. S. to operate stations and sell their cures here, they turned to Mexico, and it's more liberal manner of conducting business. These stations also introduced many country and western music artists to the U. S. In later years, some of these stations that survived featured religious programming, on-air preachers such as Reverend Ike, and others. When Rock and Roll music became popular in the 50's and 60's, many of the Border Blasters aired this music and such popular jocks as Wolfman Jack, gained immense popularity. This is a very lively history of radio that involves such diverse things as Goat Glands, International Relations, and Rock and Roll. Find out all about it on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!

Ian tells us about both men's literary works. Many of their works are set in the future. Both men wrote stories about trips to the moon. Ian recalls Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", and the classic Disney motion picture of the same name. On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we talk all about early methods of recording television programs. Mike, Smitty, and Ian are joined once again by their good friend and frequent contributor, Mike Z. Mike takes us through the history of video recording, from early film kinescope recordings, to the dawn of electronic recording on videotape. Smitty recalls some of the early color television programs which still exist on early color video tape. These tapes are unique, because so much has been lost and erased over the years.
