How the States Can Save Health Care (Guests: Brian Blase and Naomi Lopez) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:26

The nation has waited for years for the federal government to fix health care. Obamacare did not live up to its promises. The Republicans failed to pass reform when they were fully in control in 2017. Now, reformers are fending off a march forward towards bigger government health care. That is why Brian Blasé, a former economic advisor to President Trump has formed The Paragon Institute. Naomi Lopez of the Goldwater Institute is a public advisor. They both discuss how states are showing there are real solutions to fixing the nation’s health care mess. The Paragon Institute opened its doors in November. Its sole mission is health care reform at the state and federal level. The goal of health reform is to put control back into the hands of consumers, freeing providers to treat in ways that best meet the needs of their patients and promoting innovation while letting the market do its magic. Blase and Lopez remind listeners that states often lead the way to health reform. They discuss: How state employee health insurance is an opportunity for states to test out market reforms. Lawmakers seem more open to work across the aisles. Scope of practice, telehealth, right to try laws, direct care, reinsurance are just some areas where states can make improvements without having to wait for the federal government Blasé and Lopez discuss Paragon’s first product, a book, Don’t Wait for Washington: How States Can Reform Health Care Today and where listeners can get free access.  How the “Plan for America” Can Solve the Stability Problems Facing Social Security and Medicare | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:16:03

Social Security and Medicare are rapidly paying out more than they are taking in. Is it time to completely revamp these programs for a “Plan for America?” The “Plan for America” is the brainchild of Terry Nager, a certified financial planner who devoted his time and resources to this proposal since 2004.  Plan for America aims to take all the payroll tax American workers pay each year, a bit more than $1 trillion, and put it into a private trust that would pay for health care and retirement. Nager describes how the Plan can solve a huge problem for the government:  the possibility that the trust funds that support Social Security and Medicare will run out of money within a matter of years. Nager explains the plan is a total reorientation of these programs. The full 15.3 percent payroll deduction would go into the individual’s account. The money would be invested in a low-cost, total market index fund which would become a self-funded retirement plan and would replace social security.  At retirement, the individual would receive the highest of one of three calculations. Receipts would be tax free and when the person dies, the account balance goes to the individual’s heirs.  The Plan replaces Medicare by requiring everyone over age 26 to purchase an individual health plan in the private market for a premium of $11,500, of which $1,500 would go into a health savings account.  The individual would choose what health plan works best. The plans would cover long term care. Those who can’t afford the premiums would be given zero interest loans tied to a life insurance component that they can pay off over future years or from the proceeds of the retirement account.    For more information, see the Plan for America: https://www.theplanforamerica.us Sponsor: Donor’s Trust www.donorstrust.org/Heartland

Plastics Benefit Humans and the Environment (Guest: Chris DeArmitt, Ph.D.) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:26:25

Chemist and materials scientist Chris DeArmitt's book “The Plastics Paradox: Facts for a Brighter Future” shows that plastics are better than the alternatives for both human health and the environment. Other materials use more energy and produce more waste. Neither cities, states, nor the federal government, should discourage the use of plastic bags, straws, utensils, or packaging. Claims that plastic is bad for the environment are based on myths. There’s no research to back up such claims. By contrast, thousands of peer reviewed papers demonstrate that plastics are a boon for humans and the environment. DeArmitt's analysis shows you can be for the environment or against plastics, but you can't be both.

Hospitals – Stop Hiding Your Prices (Guest: Katy Talento) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:48

Hospitals appear to be dragging their feet in posting their prices even though it’s required by a federal rule. The rule went into effect nearly one year ago on January 1, 2021.  Several studies have found that the majority of hospitals have been  “unambiguously non-compliant.” The Biden administration has shown signs of getting tough. This summer, it told hospitals they could face fines up to $2,000,000 for non-compliance. Katy Talento is the executive director of alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries and a former top health advisor at the White House who led the drive for price transparency.  She discusses why enforcement of the rule is desperately needed. Nearly one in five Americans cannot afford necessary care according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Often times, insurance doesn’t cover all of the bills.  Price transparency can have a domino effect on prices. Talento discusses how patients are willing to travel hundreds of miles now if it means saving considerable money. That seems to solve the predicament of having only one hospital in town and no information on prices. Talento also refutes some of the skepticism behind the price transparency rule, even by free market thinking economists.  Additionally, Talento talks about health care share ministries and how these non-profit organizations make full use of transparent prices to keep member costs low.   Useful links: Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries http://ahcsm.org Medicare Program: Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment Systems and Quality Reporting Programs; Price Transparency of Hospital Standard Charges; Radiation Oncology Model; Request for Information on Rural Emergency Hospitals https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2021-15496.pdf
