Shane Claiborne wraps up the MLK Day of Service and Learning by relating  the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. to Christian faith and our contemporary culture. His presentation includes two video segments.  The first is available on the DVD Another World is Possible: Vol. 2. The second video is by Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. – Shane Claiborne is a bestselling author, prominent Christian activist, sought-after speaker and recovering sinner. With tears and laughter, Shane Claiborne unveils the tragic messes we’ve made of our world and the tangible hope that another world is possible. Shane graduated from Eastern University, and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. His ministry experience is varied, from a 10-week stint working alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta, to a year spent serving a wealthy mega-congregation at Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago. During the recent war in Iraq, Shane spent three weeks in Baghdad with the Iraq Peace Team. Shane is also a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped to birth and connect radical faith communities around the world. Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus. He is featured in the DVD series “Another World Is Possible” and is the author of the several books including The Irresistible Revolution, Jesus for President, and Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers. Shane speaks over 100 times a year in a dozen or so countries and nearly every state in the US. Shane has given academic seminars at Vanderbilt University, Duke University Pepperdine University, Wheaton College, Princeton University, Goshen College and Harvard University. Katharina Zellweger, a career international aid manager with over 30 years’ experience in the field in North Korea, Hong Kong, and China,speaks about the situation in North Korea. Zellweger lived and worked in Pyongyang, North Korea, for five years (2006-2011) as the North Korea country director for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). In her posting, Zellweger focused on sustainable agricultural production to address food security issues, income generation to improve people’s livelihoods, and capacity development to contribute to individual and institutional learning. While in North Korea, she collected the agriculture and public health posters that were displayed on campus last semester. Before joining SDC, Zellweger worked for almost 30 years for the Catholic service agency, Caritas, in Hong Kong where she developed pioneering Caritas involvement in China and North Korea. She is currently the Pantech Fellow in Korean Studies at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University. In December 2005, Zellweger received the Bishop Tji Hak-soon Justice and Peace award from a South Korean foundation established to promote the social justice vision of Tji. In 2006, in recognition of her path breaking work in North Korea, she was made a Dame of St. Gregory the Great by the Vatican.

What does it mean to be an undocumented youth today in the United States? What is the significance of coming out and sharing your story? What avenues do pieces of legislation such as the DREAM Act provide for these youth and how can you lend your support? Isabel Castillo  shares her faith and life experiences as an undocumented Christian and community activist.

This week, Dave reports directly from the NCAA annual convention being held in Grapevine, Texas.  Sue Kolb, women’s soccer coach and Assistant Athletic Director for Student Athlete Well-being joins Dave in reporting on educational sessions they each attended as well as general observations about the annual convention.  Issues of compliance, social media, fundraising and concussions are just a few of the topics covered in the educational sessions.  Dave also provides a brief overview of the conference in general and the governance structure of the different divisions. He gives highlights of the various sport committee reports as well as the discussion held on the issue of establishing conference wide eligibility standards. This issue has been raised due to several reports over the past number of years of student athletes competing for ODAC schools after they didn’t qualify academically at Division I or II institutions. Dave is also joined by Britten Olinger, assistant track and field coach to talk about the role of an assistant coach and the strategies that the coaching staff are implementing to grow the track and field program.
