In this week’s “Inside Athletics” podcast, Dave and James look at EMU Athletics through the lense of “Two steps forward, one step back.”  It really fits so many topics! Inside Athletics is a weekly podcast hosted by Director of Athletics, Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

Is it possible to bring to light the realities of gun violence in the U.S. and to humanize the crisis by people telling their stories of how they have been impacted? The Gun Violence Prevention Storytelling Tour provides a time to reflect on ways that Christians in America are responding. Why this issue? We believe Jesus calls Christians to confront and expose the idolatry and violence of the gun culture in America today. The Gun Violence Prevention Storytelling Tour, with Curtis Book and Fred Kauffman, is sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) East Coast. Curtis serves as Coordinator for Peace and Justice ministries and Fred serves as Philadelphia program coordinator for MCC East Coast. They are both deeply involved in an ongoing weekly Christian protest/presence at a Gun shop in Philadelphia that sells handguns that are used in many of the crimes in the Philadelphia region. Dr. David Brubaker, associate professor of organizational studies offers a presentation on his 2011-12 sabbatical experience. His presentation is entitled A Tale of Two Countries: How “Peace” Came to Mozambique and Angola and the Role of Religious Peacebuilders.

Come on in! The Latino Student Alliance (LSA) extends hospitality with the theme of “mi casa es su casa” for Latino Heritage Month. Pastor Juan C. Malvaez, of Manantial de Vida Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg, VA, is the featured speaker.

In this week’s “Inside Athletics” Dave and James talk about the falls sports as they head into the ODAC games on their schedules.  With the men’s golf team opening up this weekend, Dave also teases the upcoming Yoder Golf Classic along with special guest, Erik Kratz.  Dave closes the show with a thought about recruiting, as the teams are already working on next year’s recruits. “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:3) Campus Pastor and Director of Campus Ministries Brian Martin Burkholder broadens perspective on these abiding characteristics with personal and scriptural reflections on charity.

Dr. Vanessa Ochs is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies Program at the University of Virginia where she teaches courses in Judaism, anthropology of religion and spiritual writing. Her topic here is the dramatic changes brought about by women in Judaism in the last decades. She provides the knowledge about Judaism necessary as background and also addresses  how Jewish women turned to their Christian sisters in the early days of the Jewish women’s movement for inspiration and guidance.
