After a two month hiatus, the podcast Inside Sports returns with Dave talking about the changes that have occurred during the summer months and what to expect coming into the new school year.  Physical changes include bleachers at the turf field and a new infield for baseball.  He describes the graduate assistantship program that begins this fall with grad assistants serving as assistant coaches and helping with game management operations.  Additional staff changes at the front desk, in advertising, and men’s volleyball are also highlighted.  Dave includes a brief bio of Dominick(Dom) Porter who was just recently hired as the head coach for the men’s volleyball team.  As excitement builds for the new year, this podcast helps to give things a jump start. Inside Athletics is a weekly podcast hosted by Director of Athletics, Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

This week, Dave’s guest is Justin King, a 2012 EMU graduate and a four year member of the baseball team. This past year, Justin was the JV baseball coach at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater and recently was offered a teaching job in the Rockingham County School system and is being contacted about other coaching opportunities.  While Justin’s baseball experience at EMU wasn’t what he had hoped for or maybe expected, he used every experience and opportunity to prepare him for life after college.  And as he reflects on the growth he experienced, he realizes how important it was for shaping his life.  Justin also reflects on his first year of coaching at the high school level and is able to articulate how his EMU baseball experiences prepared him for coaching. This week, Dave reviews the recent ODAC board meetings that he and Sue Kolb attended.  He reports on some of the actions taken by the board regarding specific issues related to specific sports.  ODAC Board meetings include discussion items and Dave focuses on one that was prevalent throughout the meetings – finances.  There was generous and lengthy discussions, both in and out of sessions about finances and how each of us can reduce our costs.  Ideas included reduction of contests, reduction of size of conference tournaments, teams(from same school) traveling together and joint purchasing ideas.  However, it appeared that no one was willing to make those kind of reductions to help their own budgets due to the potential negative impact on the “student athlete experience”, which is a pillar of the DIII Philosophy. It seems that none of us are willing to “cut” because it will put us at a disadvantage in recruiting students to our university.  And the deeper question is how much can enrollment-driven schools adhere to the DIII philosophy when we have to develop successful athletic programs to attract quality athletes and students.  No answers, just discussion.  Inside Athletics: May 24, 2013 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:29

After a break of several weeks, Dave returns with the Inside Athletics podcast.  Dave’s special guest is Mike Downey, Head Athletic Trainer as they discuss the issue of concussions.  This is part one of a two part series looking at an issue that seems to have “exploded” in the past several years on all levels of sports, including the professional level.   The potential for an “accumulation effect” with concussions as evidenced by increased cases of dimentia among retired professional athletes has caused the medical community to pay closer attention to every blow to the head or body.  Mike describes a concussion, talks about the baseline testing done on EMU athletes, how he goes about diagnosing a concussion and the early steps of treament.  Part II will look at the relationship between the baseline testing and the treatment and recovery as well as some of the work done by local medical groups regarding education and prevention programs.  Mike is serving on a task force that is working on programs for the local high schools and youth programs.
