Episode 172: The 18-Mile Bike Trek and Trading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:32

In Rob’s absence today, the Producer Jason Pyles is pleased to bring back guest host Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan. At Rob’s request, Brad takes some time to discuss his 18-mile bicycle ride, and as is a steady tradition on this podcast, we draw parallel, metaphorical principles to trading. Everything relates back to trading. Brad says that riding a bike and trading require similar skills. We’ll save the bicycle parallels for the show, but some of the trading-related concepts that Brad addresses are the following: — the futility of thinking we can force the market to do our bidding — working through challenging circumstances that are not ideal — feeling impatient about making lots of money quickly — the key skills of knowing when to keep going and knowing when to stop — the psychology of moving past a loss — removing pressure from our trading by letting go of expectations — and more! Brad also answers a listener's e-mail question about choosing a broker. And finally, we wrap up this episode with Brad’s parting words of wisdom for your trading this summer. Tune in!  Episode 171: Are Spikes in the FX Market Caused by Computer Algorithms? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:57

During Episode 171, your host Rob Booker speaks with “The Coach” — Scott Welsh, co-creator of the Bossilator course and a peak-performance instructor who resides in Columbus, Ohio. Rob and Scott tackle an e-mail from an inquisitive and concerned listener who goes by "Space Pip" (on Twitter). Apparently, Space Pip has been hearing more and more lately that there are spikes in the FX market that have been caused by computer algorithms, so Rob and Scott address the veracity of this theory. Of course, this leads to Rob's vision of what would actually happen if computers took over the world. Along the way, Rob takes a stab at describing what a spike is and where spikes come from. And this e-mail leads Scott to worry a little about the presence of "the world is out to get me" mentality. Oh, and don't miss Rob's radical solutions for solving insider trading! All this and so much more in Episode 171 of The Traders Podcast.  Episode 170: Dress for Success and Mr. Steady | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:22

For Episode 170, your host Rob Booker speaks with Mr. Steady himself — veteran trader Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com, about the concept of "dress for success" and whether this strategy has any merit — especially for traders. Rob and Jared also discuss other requisite preparations (such as sufficient rest) that they bring to the table for each new day of trading. Rob asks Jared why he trades (instead of doing something else). Rob also asks Jared why he's still trading and if it brings him happiness. Rob even asks Jared what's the most amount of money he's ever lost on a single trade and what kept him going after that point. Rob asks Jared what he's looking to get out of trading. Some interesting questions with some interesting answers... Don't miss it!  Episode 169: Our Rocket Ship Stock Market, the Unemployment Rate and a Traders Podcast Box Set? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:37

We think Episode 169 is a good time, and we think you’ll agree... First of all, our friend Keiron wrote and asked about purchasing every one of The Traders Podcast episodes in one fell swoop, so we entertain ourselves as we entertain that thought. Rob also spends some time talking about our rocket ship stock market and the employment market. Are we in some kind of a fake recovery because the economy is not creating jobs fast enough to replace the jobs that were lost during the financial crisis? Rob discusses how the unemployment rate factors in — and how it doesn’t factor in the people who have given up and dropped out of the job market altogether. Rob notes that there are under-employed people who are making less than they used to, and how that’s throwing off the numbers, as well. Other questions posed in this episode: Can the current unemployment rate tank the whole economy? Are we looking at a potential double-dip recession? Has the world economy changed forever? These questions inspire Rob to talk about how we trade our perceptions and how we trade our stories (and not what’s in front of us). Rob says we should play the market where it is, and not where we think it should be... We also dip into the mailbag and read comments from Matt about NLP and an e-mail from Brian regarding Apple, which leads Rob to pose the question: Has Apple become Microsoft? Rob also asks what will be the next latest and greatest thing? (Rob invites you to write and tell us what you think the next big thing will be.) Oh, and we talk about Pets.com. Good stuff. Join us!  Episode 168: Knowing When It’s Time to Stop | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:39

In this episode, your host Rob Booker and the producer dip into The Traders Podcast mailbag to hear some listener feedback. First, we read part of a short e-mail from Heidi, who has a tremendous commitment to listening to The Traders Podcast — even in the face of potentially mortal injury... And next we read about the journey of a trader in Australia named Althea. This e-mail leads Rob into a valuable conversation about knowing when it's time to stop and the power of stopping.  Episode 167: How Massively Disastrous Losing Streaks Begin | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:21

In this valuable episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks with Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan, about Brad’s wild week (last week), when some of his positions went out of control against him. Brad describes his week and how he came out of it. This conversation leads to a number of important discussion topics, such as: How to Know When You’re Finished Trading During a Good Week, and If You’re in a Hole, Do You Stop Digging (or Just Get a Smaller Shovel)? Also, Rob describes the three routes someone can take when they’ve experienced a bad week in the market, and he describes how massively disastrous losing streaks begin. Brad talks about what he looks for when he’s reassessing the trades that went wrong, and he also spends a little time talking about his personal lifestyle as a trader. We highly recommend this episode! Thanks for listening.  Episode 166: Climbing Through Discouragement to Achieve Greatness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:28

We have a very special episode of The Traders Podcast for you today that, oddly enough, isn’t directly about trading at all. ... Or is it? This recording was made in May of 2012 for The Goals Podcast (but was never released). It features your host Rob Booker and the producer, Jason Pyles — along with peak-performance coach and trader, Scott Welsh. Our special guest in this episode is a man named Kevin Buetts, who is a professional arm wrestler of 10 years. In 2005, Kevin took 5th place in the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Tokyo, Japan. During this episode, you’ll hear Rob, Scott and Jason talk to Kevin about climbing through discouragement to achieve greatness. We cover topics such as, how we know if we’re destined for greatness; what motivates us to embark on a goal; the idea that we may already come pre-packaged with raw talent (or is there no such thing as raw talent?). We talk about the humbling journey toward greatness and the fire of determination that seems to burn below the surface of those who become great at something. We talk about pressing forward when the dark time comes and the various roles of fear in achieving greatness. So, if there’s something you want to achieve greatness in — such as trading — then Episode 166 is a must-listen!  Episode 165: What Type of Trader Am I? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:44

In Episode 165, your host Rob Booker is joined by Jared Johnson (the founder and lead trader at Day Traders FX.com), to help answer some listener e-mail questions. The first question is an e-mail from David, who’s having a problem with a chat room moderator who won't stop asking him to share information about his trades! This is a very interesting question, and Rob and Jared rise to the occasion with some great solutions for David. The second question is an e-mail from Robert who asks, “What type of trader am I?," which leads to a great discussion about identifying where one fits in the markets (and if that even matters at all)... Here again, Rob and Jared deliver for Robert, in an episode that we consider to be "classic Traders Podcast" material. Thanks for listening, and feel free to e-mail us with your questions!  Episode 163: Trader Tech Talk Podcast With John Verbrugge | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:59

During Episode 163, your host Rob Booker interviews a fellow podcaster and friend of the show, John Verbrugge, who is the host of Trader Tech Talk, a new podcast that addresses the tech of trading, including trading strategies, algorithmic trading systems, programming concepts, quantitative analysis and even some quantitative finance. Rob asks John what inspired him to create Trader Tech Talk, and he talks to John about his background in programming. Rob and John also discuss which programming language might be an optimal starting point for someone planning to begin automated programming. Rob and John talk about the concept of “simplicity,” and Rob has John verify the veracity of a rumor that John is presently working on a book. We’re excited for you to listen to this episode, because Rob and Jason want to recommend the Trader Tech Talk podcast to all you trading podcast-lovers out there!  Episode 162: Guest Host Bradley Fried Discusses Three of His Trading Rules | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:15

We have a surprise development for you for Episode 162 ... Your usual host, Rob Booker, was on the road while we were recording, so we asked Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan, to stand in as a guest host of The Traders Podcast! And we think you listeners will enjoy hearing from Brad, because he discusses three of his 18 trading rules. Brad talks about Rule No. 15, which addresses how placing expectations of wealth or solving financial problems with trading injects the process with emotion and disables it. This is the rule where Brad says to focus on process, not profits. Brad also discusses his Rule No. 14, which encourages you to make your trading an active and creative process, not a mechanical one. And Brad also tells us about Rule No. 18, which involves the practice of rewarding yourself. You don’t want to miss this episode — Brad tears it up!  Episode 161: Braving the Rapids, Embarrassment and Rob Booker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:33

In this wild episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks with Market Strategist Neal Gilbert, who is the author of "Braving the Rapids," an eBook trading strategy that Rob says is reasonably simple, and yet, still powerful enough to be consistently profitable. Rob asks Neal to discuss certain aspects of his eBook, including the five stages of grief as applied to the markets, where Neal explains how Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance can, unfortunately, apply to traders. Rob also discusses some e-mail feedback he recently received from someone who was deeply offended by a story told in Episode 158 about something Rob’s previous employees did on a business trip. Rob apologizes and expresses his unconventional belief that people shouldn’t be embarrassed about their behavior. This leads to a discussion about how we are often embarrassed over our mistakes, even if they were the result of an earnest attempt based on good intentions. Rob calls himself "the first mistake-maker," and he talks about examining what aspect of our lives is holding us back from getting what we really want. You don't want to miss this one, especially the off-the-cuff shenanigans that occur after the podcast...  Episode 160: Fear and Timing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:18

In this memorable episode of The Traders Podcast about “Fear and Timing,” your host Rob Booker and the producer, Jason Pyles, answer a valuable e-mail inquiry from a podcast listener named Jason, who asks us how to know when it’s the right time to make the necessary sacrifices to become a successful trader. Jason the listener also asks how one has the confidence to step out in faith and take that risky leap into the darkness. He also asks how to address the resistance of disapproving family and friends who view such actions as being reckless, foolish and irresponsible. Naturally, Rob answers these questions with all the fiery conviction and honesty that you’ve come to expect from him. And Jason the producer also offers some heart-to-heart answers, since Jason the listener also directed these questions at him. Also in this episode, you’ll hear Rob describe a Tweet that made him want to throw the Starbucks furniture through the windows, and you'll hear a few stories from both Rob and Jason.  Episode 159: 3-2-1 and I’m Done | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:05

In this 49-minute, extended episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker chats with Matt LaCoco and Shonn Campbell about all the usual topics that you’d expect — psychics, yaks and traveling through the time-space continuum — sure, but they also discuss the following: Personal mantras for life; the purpose in having someone to talk with about trading; the practice of skipping the first trade of each day, what it can do for your trading, and if this rule applies to automated trading systems; since robots never get emotional (but humans do), then why does anyone ever want to run their trading account in a discretionary fashion?; the role of intuition or “gut feelings”; the dangers of becoming obsessed with extraordinarily profitable days in the market and the way these big days can alter our thinking about trading; ceasing to worry about “What Could Have Been”; getting fed up with our pitfalls to the point that we’re motivated enough to stop falling into the same traps... just to name a few. Leave a comment below and let us know your personal mantra! The best mantra submitted within one week of this podcast (by June 24, 2013) will receive a $100 Amazon gift certificate! Thanks for listening.  Episode 158: Mirage Trading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:44

Are you a Mirage Trader? Do your biases blind you to seeing the reality of what's actually on your charts? We hope not. Today in Episode 158, your host Rob Booker speaks with veteran trader Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com, about the emptiness of mirage trading, the scary phenomenon of seeing something that isn’t there... Rob was recently speaking with a trader who was struggling and complained that no one appreciated how difficult trading was for this person. Jared describes his friend who would secretly trade from her day job by having a little laptop hidden under her desk. Then Rob shares a story about how he unwittingly and unexpectedly footed the bill for some special services that two of his employees received in New York City... Rob asks Jared about his daily routine when he wakes up at 4 a.m., and they discuss Jared's average amount of sleep on any given night. Rob describes his own odd morning routine that occurs before he starts trading each day. And Rob and Jared bring you an update on their combined trading account for charity, and they comment on how nice it’s been not to worry or stress about each other. Tune in!  Episode 157: Personal Accountability and How Long It Takes to Become Successful at Trading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:24

Welcome to Episode 157 of The Traders Podcast! In this show, your host Rob Booker talks with Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com, about some listener feedback we’ve recently received. Our friend Justin e-mailed in to the podcast to suggest / request that Rob provide more discussions of trading setups, back-testing and technical analysis. So, in answer to Justin’s request, Rob alternates with Jared and provides — more or less — six quick methods for entering a trade. Next Rob talks about having breakfast with Tim Bourquin and their discussion of the universal question that beginning traders always seem to ask: “How long will it take to become successful at trading?” Or another version of this same question is: “How long until I can quit my day job and just trade full time?” This leads Rob to tell a story about his good friend, Shonn, and his response when Rob asked him if he could think of a time when someone asked him to do something and he was absolutely confident in his answer. All of this, of course, leads back to Justin’s e-mail about trading setups. Rob says the important thing is not how you set up your trades, but how you use what you have been given. Rob and Jared also talk about forgiving one’s self and about being sufficiently embarrassed with ourselves for our own mistakes, which leads to a candid discussion of personal accountability and transparency. And finally, Rob and Jared wrap up this episode by making some confessions about their joint trading account for charity. Good stuff. Listen!
