Friday Phone Call # 47: Jocelyn Prince, Connectivity Director at Woolly Mammoth | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. This conversation with Jocelyn Prince, Connectivity Director at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in DC, epitomizes what I was trying to articulate in my recent HowlRound post and the conversation that followed from it. After this conversation, they opened their production of The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity , which we discuss here, and it went into an extended run. I really appreciate the approach here, integrating the concepts and tools of traditional community organizing into the process of producing the play. And that she's talking about this as something that springs from (and, in fact, is) her dramaturgical work on the play. It harkens back to another post where I was trying to articulate my thoughts about dramaturgy and producing . Jocelyn manages to pull all my muddled thoughts into a comprehensible package and practice, and it's exciting to see Woolly gaining mastery over this thing they've been investigating for...

Friday Phone Call # 46: Noah Siegler, Artistic Director of StageNorth in Washburn, Wisconsin | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Today my guest is Noah Siegler, who is the artistic director of StageNorth in Washburn, Wisconsin. There is such fresh air in this discussion—around the ways StageNorth connects with its neighbors, about the ways it organizes its business, about the purpose of doing it at all. I'm struck, in talking with him, about how close to community and purpose any organization like it is. For all the hand-wringing about impact and relevance that we see in the conversations here at HowlRound so regularly, here's a man who is in full relationship with his audience, his citizenship role, and his definitions of success. What can we learn from each other, what can we share with each other, that brings us closer to what Dudley Cocke started the week off with : "a theater that's national in scope, regional in emphasis, and democratic in attitude"? Thanks for the time, Noah. Very glad...

Friday Phone Call # 45: Jeni Mahoney of Seven Devils Playwrights Conference in McCall, Idaho | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Today I talk with Jeni Mahoney about the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference in McCall, Idaho, where she is the Artistic Director. If this group is new to you, take a look at their New Play Map entry . They've got an outstanding record of impacting playwrights and plays through this developmental conference each summer. After our conversation, Jeni wrote to go deeper into her own personal challenges and preoccupations as they intersected the topics in the call. So this week you have both reading and listening to do. Part of what I so love about being part of HowlRound and the Commons is how it gives the mic to folks who rarely get it, regardless of their commitment and contribution to the sector. Over to you, Jeni! Listen to weekly podcasts hosted by David Dower as he interviews theater artists from around the country to highlight #newplay bright spots. You...

Friday Phone Call # 44: Julianne Brienza of Capital Fringe | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Today, dear listener, I have both a treat and a challenge for you. My guest is Julianne Brienza, cofounder and Executive Director of the Capital Fringe in Washington, DC. That's the treat. The challenge is that I had to record the call from my cell phone sitting outside in a flight path with her Skyping from Stockholm. So the connection is maddening, though the quality of the conversation is sparkling. I love the way Julianne's thinking about this stuff is so at one with the whole energy of Fringe in general. Lots of great stuff in this one. And the Capital Fringe is coming off a banner year, with their Fall season coming up right around the corner. Bright spots and shout outs galore in the very spirit of Fringe. Listen to weekly podcasts hosted by David Dower as he interviews theater artists from around the country to highlight #newplay...
