 Friday Phone Call # 57: Olga Garay-English | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Many of you have already read the story of my first meeting with Olga Garay-English in 2002 in Portland, Oregon. A TCG-sponsored gathering called New Works, New Ways. From that very first poke in the ribs, Olga has been a critical conceptual collaborator in my own work and in the formulation of the identity of HowlRound. We start from her pre-performing-arts days, move to her work with Miami Dade College, the ideas underpinning her time as the first program officer of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and then the ideas defining her contributions as the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles. Talk about making an impact! This call is equal parts personal, practical, and philosophical. As ever, with Olga, it is also entirely personable. This woman personifies the axiom "angels fly because they take themselves lightly". Olga flies. Where will she land now that she's done her turn at the LA DCA?

Friday Phone Call # 56: The Wilhelm Brothers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Today I get a chance to talk to a team of brothers who have been making work together for decades: David and Jeremy Wilhelm. There's such hybridity in their creative partnership. Sometimes they perform music in club settings. Often they work individually. And in the particular case of "Red Eye to Havre de Grace", the theater piece they have made with Thaddeus Phillips' Lucidity Suitcase, they collaborate on performance pieces over long arcs of time. We talk about how they maintain both their intense connectedness and their individual identities in the work. We talk about their mentors and their inspiration. And we get specific around the long journey of "Red Eye", which will be at New York Theatre Workshop and Walker Art Center this season and just had a very happy run here in Boston at ArtsEmerson.

Friday Phone Call # 55: Deborah Stein and Suli Holum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. Today my guests are Deborah Stein and Suli Holum. Together they are Stein|Holum Projects and ArtsEmerson is about to premiere their second piece, "The Wholehearted". Their earlier piece was "Chimera" and it is currently touring. This call covers their individual lives pre-company and their work together. There's a lot of discussion about the collaborative process, the development of a company, the challenges and advantages of touring, and the infrastructure that they are drawing on for support of their work. If you don't know these two, you are in for a treat. If you do, you will enjoy hearing their thinking now as they approach the time when their projects start layering and their company gathers momentum.

Friday Phone Call # 54: Deborah Cullinan of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

By David Dower. My guest for this call is the Executive Director of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Deb and I have worked alongside each other for decades now—though that must mean we started when she was in kindergarten. If you don't know her work, or her ideas, you owe it to yourself to poke around a bit on the internets. A career in the arts has a throughline just like any story. It's interesting to figure out what your own is, the farther you get along the path of your own life. I am fortunate to live and work in a time of extraordinary thinkers, leaders, and mentors. Deb is all three for me.
