1255 Dashing, Sounds of the Season | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3635

Navona Records is delighted to present DASHING, a festive album for the holiday season featuring brand new works and arrangements of holiday favorites by several outstanding composers, with performances by The Stanbery Singers, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra. Familiar faces and tunes make appearances here, such as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s perennial holiday favorite, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from his ballet The Nutcracker. Henry Wolking provides a jazz arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; likewise, David Tanner contributes with an arrangement of O Holy Night. His other work, A Visit from St. Nicholas, sets Clement Moore’s classic poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” to orchestra, with narration by Kerry Stratton. Delvyn Case and Timothy Lee Miller deliver rousing, spirited music with their Rocket Sleigh for orchestra and A Christmas Celebration for wind band, respectively. Christopher J. Hoh introduces the album’s choral works with his invitational Come Now and Celebrate, along with a choral arrangement of Thomas W. Talley’s folksong “Behold That Star,” composed in the style of African–American spirituals. L. Peter Deutsch weaves choral voices with solo instruments on each of his Three Winter Holiday Songs, “A Winter’s Rime,” “Hodie Christus Natus Est,” and “The Holly and the Ivy.” James Shrader contributes two choral works—a setting of “In the Bleak Midwinter” as a theme and variations, and Balulalow, written in a traditional Scottish style. Phillip Rhodes rounds out the album with the luminescent A Lullaby for the Nativity.  1254 An Orchestral Journey - Brian Wilbur Grundstrom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5307

A composer equally accustomed to writing for orchestra, opera, film, theater, chorus, and chamber ensembles, Brian Wilbur Grundstrom’s voice includes a strong affinity for long melodic lines, distinctive tonal harmonic vocabulary, engaging rhythms, skillfully executed counterpoint, and dramatic imagery, all of which are reflected in the five orchestral works which span fourteen years on his debut release with Navona Records, AN ORCHESTRAL JOURNEY, to create a visionary and lyrical expedition that is quite accessible and easily travelled for the listener. Contentment, Poem for Orchestra (1999), influenced by the 19th- and early 20th-century tradition of the “tone poem,” is an expressive transformation of mood from beginning to end, while Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra (2000) illustrates Grundstrom’s tendencies to explore rhythm and meter, developing a lively and pastoral dance in a five-pulse meter, moving from a powerful introductory theme to an uplifting and joyous celebration. Suite for Chamber Orchestra (2002) shows some of Grundstrom’s most abstract and harmonically adventurous passages on the album, expounding an emotional experience, from tragedy and anguish, to healing and acceptance, and finally to exultation and maturity. Demonstrating clear concertante style, American Reflections for Strings and Harp (2009) uses rhythmic energy and orchestrations that suggest film scoring, and is praised by Maestro Jeffrey Dokken: “The polyphony in this work is nothing short of genius … [and the piece is] harmonically satisfying and interesting.” Chenonceau (2013) takes its name from a castle in France’s Loire Valley and employs different instrumental combinations to carry the melodic ideas from one group to the other, contrasting the textures of the woodwinds and the strings. SONOS Chamber Orchestra Music Director Erik Ochsner writes: "Many audiences cringe at the thought of new music. We had such positive feedback from audiences on how much they enjoyed Grundstrom's work. It is modern, yet tonal."  1253 Wagner: The Flying Dutchman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9098

The Flying Dutchman, WWV 63, is a German-language opera, with libretto and music by Richard Wagner. Wagner claimed in his 1870 autobiography Mein Leben that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in July and August 1839. In his 1843 Autobiographic Sketch, Wagner acknowledged he had taken the story from Heinrich Heine's retelling of the legend in his 1833 satirical novel The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski. The central theme is redemption through love. Wagner conducted the premiere at the Semper Opera in Dresden in 1843. This work shows early attempts at operatic styles that would characterise his later music dramas. Wagner uses a number of leading motifs associated with the characters and themes. The motifs are all introduced in the overture, which begins with a well-known ocean or storm motif before moving into the Dutchman and Senta motifs. Wagner originally wrote the work to be performed without intermission – an example of his efforts to break with tradition – and, while today's opera houses sometimes still follow this directive, it is also performed in a three-act version. This performance, by the CMD German Opera Company of Berlin, is available for purchase at our online CD store - www.ClassicalRecordings.co   Sponsors of this show are: Flowers.FM - Sponsor of the Wagner Opera Series Other Links: Advertise on Classical Music Discoveries Become a Friend of Classical Music Discoveries About our Recording Equipment Websites for Musicians Created by Musicians Grocery and Travel Coupons (save thousands of dollars) Have Your Music Played on Classical Music Discoveries Music Store - download music from our shows (without the show dialogues) Classical Essentials - FREE Classical Music (sponsored by Dennis Loeffel) Join us on Facebook

 1252 SPARKS - Miniature Works for Orchestra | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3443

SPARKS, a compilation of orchestral miniature works by several composers from Navona Records, offers a sampling of much of what post-modern, contemporary orchestral music has to offer, and is most interesting to consider in contrast to nineteenth century orchestral transitions. Miniatures, in their brevity, defy the conventional bias that orchestral music must conform to the characteristics of large symphonies. More generally, the works on this album suggest a wide range of influences unique to contemporary postmodernism. These include the aesthetics of mid century composers, as well as film scores and non-classical genres. We will be pleased to hear: Gangsta by Jay Anthony Gach Still Motion by Rain Worthington Fragments by Marga Richter A Tango Fantasy by Phillip Rhodes Summertime by George Gershwin Prelude for Charles by Steven Winteregg In Memoriam by Douglas Anderson Event Horizon by Bruce Babcock Crown of the Continent by Stephen Lias For more information about this CD, please visit Navona Records at www.NavonaRecords.com This CD is also available on Itunes and Amazon We wish to thank our friends at Parma Recordings for allowing us to broadcast this CD to our listening audience all over the world.  1250 Dan Redfeld: A Hopeful Place | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4443

American composer, conductor, orchestrator and producer Dan Redfeld has had his music and arrangements performed internationally from the concert hall to the musical theater stage to the recording studio. About his work “A Hopeful Place” Dan writes: “I was asked to compose a work for voice and chamber orchestra to be premiered by Ensemble Green, a Los Angeles based group of musicians committed to playing new concert pieces.  I immediately contacted John and proposed we collaborate on a work for Kristi Holden.  Fortunately for us both, she enthusiastically said “Yes!”  John and I quickly settled on a nine movement structure and the idea that the listener would follow a woman’s cycle of life from birth to death.” Concerning the debut performance Dan continues: “I conducted Kristi and eighteen musicians on that night in a premiere performance one cannot forget.  The entire evening was beset with a series of surreal events and yet we made it through to a prolonged standing ovation.  That night reflected what the piece is about - Life.  Sometimes its easy, sometimes its a struggle.  But the human spirit continues. To learn more about Dan please visit his website at www.DanRedfeld.com His CDs are available on Amazon and Itunes.  1249 Wagner: Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 10273

Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes; WWV 49, is an early opera by Richard Wagner in five acts, with the libretto written by the composer after Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel of the same name. The title is commonly shortened to Rienzi. Written between July 1838 and November 1840, it was first performed in Dresden, on 20 October 1842, and was the composer's first success. The opera is set in Rome and is based on the life of Cola di Rienzi, a late medieval Italian populist figure who succeeds in outwitting and then defeating the nobles and their followers and in raising the power of the people. Magnanimous at first, he is forced by events to crush the nobles' rebellion against the people's power, but popular opinion changes and even the Church, which had urged him to assert himself, turns against him. In the end the populace burns the Capitol, in which Rienzi and a few adherents have made a last stand.     Sponsors of this show are: Flowers.FM - Sponsor of the Wagner Opera Series Other Links: Advertise on Classical Music Discoveries Become a Friend of Classical Music Discoveries About our Recording Equipment Websites for Musicians Created by Musicians Grocery and Travel Coupons (save thousands of dollars) Have Your Music Played on Classical Music Discoveries Music Store - download music from our shows (without the show dialogues) Classical Essentials - FREE Classical Music (sponsored by Dennis Loeffel) Join us on Facebook

1248 Ezra Donner: Antigone, A Chamber Opera in One Act | File Type: audio/mp4 | Duration: 3818

In this broadcast we are pleased to present a One Act Chamber Opera by Ezra Donner entitled Antigone. Ezra describes this opera in this way: "I have always been attracted to the idea of telling a story through music, and the idea of writing an opera based on a Greek drama has had particular appeal to me for some time. Remembering from music history that opera began as an attempt to imitate the theatre of the Ancient Greeks, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to re-visit an original Greek drama in a musical context closer to our times. The name “Antigone” means “unyielding”. In a way, she is a great role model for artists: a person who challenges the status quo and goes face-to-face against conventional wisdom, holding fast to her own personal beliefs no matter what. In the same way I feel that we as artists need to continue to produce work which we believe has meaning and worth, regardless of reactions from the general public, patrons, and other artists. Although the original drama is now over 2,000 years old, its central themes continue to resonate with us in surprising and meaningful ways. My musical setting attempts to bring together musical styles of centuries past with a contemporary idiom to highlight the timelessness, and timely relevance, of this text." The libretto is adapted from the ancient Greek drama by Sophocles.   Sponsors of this show are: La Musica International Chamber Music Festival Southwest Symphony Orchestra Dennis Loeffel - Classical Essentials Flowers.FM - Sponsor of the Wagner Opera Series Book-a-Room Other Links: Advertise on Classical Music Discoveries Become a Friend of Classical Music Discoveries About our Recording Equipment Websites for Musicians Created by Musicians Grocery and Travel Coupons (save thousands of dollars) Have Your Music Played on Classical Music Discoveries Music Store - download music from our shows (without the show dialogues) Classical Essentials - FREE Classical Music (sponsored by Dennis Loeffel)

Music to Deliver Newspapers By | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14987

What do we do in our spare time here at Classical Music Discoveries? Well, its all about the music, of course. Here is a very unusual show we did for Newspaper Carriers! Face it, it can get a bit boring and tiring out there at 3:00 AM folding, bagging and delivering those newspapers. This music was created to keep the carriers awake with GOOD music (none of that hard rock stuff). Plus it allows the carriers to keep track of their progress. This is based on a 4 hour shift. The first hour (spent folding, banding, bagging papers) is all soundtracks. The next 3 hours (delivery time) is all about really upbeat dance music and some really quirky stuff thrown in (like "Pineapple Princess" sung by Annette Funicello). Plus the last song is "Smile" reminding everyone to return home (after a long night) with a smile on their face. There is NO narration for promos in this as it is 100% music! Dedicated to the thousands of newspaper carriers out there. We know many are musicians that believe in working for a living and not asking for federal funds for support. We appreciate all musicians everywhere that support themselves with hard work. Performing all night then after the gig, delivering newspapers. We salute you!

1244 Wagner: Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love, WWV 38) | File Type: audio/mp4 | Duration: 10182

Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love, WWV 38), is an early opera in two acts by Richard Wagner, with the libretto written by the composer after Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. Described as a Große komische Oper, it was composed in 1834, and Wagner conducted the premiere in 1836 at Magdeburg. Poorly attended and with a lead singer who forgot the words and had to improvise, it was a resounding flop and its second performance had to be cancelled after a fist-fight between the prima donna's husband and the lead tenor broke out backstage before the curtain had even risen; only three people were in the audience. It was never performed again in Wagner's lifetime. Wagner's second opera, and his first to be performed, has many signs of an early work: the style is modelled closely on contemporary French and Italian comic opera. It is also referred to as the forgotten comedy, in that only two of Wagner's works are comedies, the other being Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
