In this episode Dave Chivers, CWUYouth Committee Vice Chair talks to Weyman Bennett, Joint Secretary of Unite Against Fascism (UAF). They talk about the importance and how people can become involved in the fight against far right organisations such as the EDL and the BNP. Weyman explains how important the role of unions are in this fight and explains the simple ways that people can get involved. They also discuss the forthcoming local elections on 3rd May and the Luton demonstration that will take place on 5th May to counter the EDL.
Ryan Case, CWUYouth Chair speaks to Owen Jones (author of Chavs: The Demonisation of the Working Class) at CWU Annual Conference. Owen gives his views on why it is important to recruit young people into the union and offers his ideas on how to do this. They also discuss the implications of the union carrying Motion 16 which urges the union to defend jobs and employment rights; campaign for decent, permanent jobs for all young people and to organise a national demonstration again youth unemployment. They also look at the whole issue of union’s becoming more community-based and supporting the unemployed as well as the employed.
