Dwa dni później obchodzimy rocznicę uchwalenia Konstytucji 3 Maja, czyli pierwszej polskiej konstytucji, powszechnie uważanej również za pierwszą w Europie. Ze względu na bliskość dwóch dni wolnych, bardzo często Polacy biorą wolne drugiego maja i tym sposobem, zależnie od tego w jakie dni tygodnia przypadają w danym roku te święta, mają czasem nawet pięciodniowe wakacje. Co do obchodów pierwszego maja mamy prawdę mówiąc dosyć mieszane uczucia. Święto Pracy było bardzo hucznie obchodzone w czasach rządów socjalistycznych, wszyscy obywatele musieli obowiązkowo brać udział w długich, uroczystych pochodach, ze sztandarami i przemówieniami. Nie było mowy, żeby nie pojawić się w miejscu zbiórki, bo bardzo skrupulatnie sprawdzano obecność! Po obaleniu socjalizmu znienawidzonych pochodów natychmiast zaniechano, ale zostało trochę niewygodne święto. „A, niech sobie będzie", pomyśleli zapewne nowi, demokratyczni przywódcy, „w końcu szacunek do pracy nie powinien być uwarunkowany ustrojem politycznym, a przynajmniej będziemy mieli długi weekend". Długi, bo właśnie przywrócili zdelegalizowane przez komunistów święto Konstytucji 3 Maja. Przez poprzednie 50 lat 3 maja był głównie okazją do antyrządowych demonstracji, ale od 1990 roku, gdy znowu jest oficjalnym świętem, zmienił się w spokojny, wiosenny dzień. Obchodom nie towarzyszą jakieś specjalnie wyszukane tradycje, ale na wszystkich budynkach, a także na przedzie autobusów i tramwajów wywiesza się biało-czerwone polskie flagi. Oczywiście odbywa się kilka oficjalnych uroczystości, obowiązkowe składanie kwiatów pod pomnikami i na grobach ważnych postaci historycznych (jak się bez wątpienia jeszcze przekonacie, uroczyste składanie kwiatów na grobach Polacy mają we krwi), niekiedy zmienia się też trochę program w radio i telewizji. Przede wszystkim jednak, Polacy cieszą się w tym czasie odzyskaną nareszcie wolnością i często korzystają z niej, wybierając się na majówki! ----Formal English---- Long Weekend in May May first, or Labor Day, is a national holiday in Poland, a nonworking day. Two days later, we celebrate the anniversary of acclaiming the May third Constitution, the first constitution of Poland, which is also widely considered being the first in Europe. Because of the close vicinity of two holidays, the Polish often take paid leave on May second, and this way, depending on the days of the week the holidays fall on in a given year, sometimes they get even five days of vacation. Truth be told, we have rather mixed feelings toward celebrating May first. Labor Day has been very pompously celebrated in socialists' rule times, and all citizens were obliged to take part in long, ceremonial processions with banners and speeches. There was no way not to appear in a gathering place because attendance was being taken meticulously! After bringing down socialism, the much-hated processions were given up on immediately, but the slightly uncomfortable holiday remained. "Oh, let it be," the new democratic rulers must have probably thought. "After all, the respect for work shouldn't be conditioned by a political system, and at least we're going to have a long weekend." Long. Because they have just restored the holiday of May third, which was de-legalized by communists. For the previous fifty years, May third has mostly been an occasion for anti-government demonstrations, but starting in 1990, since it's an official holiday again, it has morphed into a calm spring day.
