Learn Polish with PolishPod101! Don't forget to stop by PolishPod101.com for more great Polish Language Learning Resources! Urządzamy bale i imprezy, a o północy wystrzeliwujemy w niebo fajerwerki i pijemy szampana. ----Formal English---- Sylvester Night and New Year's Day In Poland, Sylvester Night is celebrated the same way as in other parts of Europe. We organize balls and parties, and at midnight we launch fireworks to the sky and drink champagne. In spite of the cold, there are a number of open air events organized by city councils, and a lot of people greet the new year in marketplaces and squares, sharing champagne and wishes with strangers. On television, mostly parties and concerts are broadcast, so it's hard to count on closing ourselves off at home in front of the screen and watching a good movie unless it's on a DVD. Sylvester Night, although so-called from a name of a pope, is a very secular holiday. Does it mean there are no interesting Polish traditions connected to greeting the new year? Of course there are—there are even quite a lot of them—but all are related to...the coming of spring. In our climate, it has always been spring that has always constituted the symbolic beginning of the year, and a calendar accepted from the West couldn’t have changed that fully. Still, there are a handful of traditions that your Polish friends may not even know, but they are respected here and there by some people. If you want to secure good luck in the financial sphere, put the scales of the Christmas Eve carp inside your wallet, so that in the new year there will be as much money as the fish had scales! Pay attention not to do housework either on Sylvester Day nor the New Year's Day, or you may sweep the happiness out of your [...]
