T0184 John the Baptist is in jail! He sends a messenger to ask Jesus if He is indeed the Messiah or if they should wait for another. Jesus assures him that He is the Messiah. Jesus then proceeds to explain that John is one of the greatest men that has ever lived and tell of the immaturity of His generation. Pastor John draws parallels between Jesus' generation and the current one. They are marks of immaturity and a world where Jesus is NOT Lord! Such a world will always be "upside-down".

Change does not often come without a lot of hard work. If we count the cost before we begin, there is likely to less discouragement along the way.

W0729 Nehemiah is a book about re-building that which is broken down. It’s about seeing a work that needs to be done and allowing the Holy Spirit the freedom to use us to accomplish that work. Sometimes - even as Christians, there are things in our lives that need building or re-building. It could be our devotional life, a career, being a parent, or even being a godly spouse. On the ministry side of things, it could be as a Sunday school teacher, a Bible study leader, or a family devotional time that needs building or re-building. For us to be effective in any area we need to know that there is a Biblical way to build and there is a carnal way to build. As we get involved in the task, it can be a wonderful, fulfilling experience or: We can end up feeling inadequate, worthless, and frustrated to the point of never wanting to “ever try” again. That is where studying Nehemiah and his success at re-building the walls around Jerusalem can be of great benefit to us. God’s greatest purposes can only be achieved in us inasmuch as we are willing to do things HIS way. John 5:30 (NKJV) "I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. D. The book of Nehemiah gives us tremendous insight into the Biblical principles of re-building that which is broken down.

W0731 Nehemiah face the challenge to rebuild Jerusalem head-on and his decision contained 3 important ingredients. These same ingredients are necessary today if we are going to re-build successfully - 1 Investigation, 2 Cooperation, 3 Determination.

W0732 A lot can be said about a person by the company they keep. Chapter three is a list of names of the people building Jerusalem's wall. This is a study of those names and the character of those building. IF we are going to build or rebuild, we must look around at our daily influences and ask if they are part of the problem or part of the solution.

W0733 In this study - Pastor John takes a look at the tactics of the enemy when we begin to rebuild. He seems to always start on the outside and works his way inside. Often there will be those that try to discourage us from what we have been called to do - from the distant acquaintance to a close friend. But we must have a mind to work and finish what the Lord told us to do.

W0734 Discouragement to rebuild may start from the outside like it did with Sandballat and Tobiah, but if that doesn't work it will often move much closer to home. Nehemiah's discouragement now comes from Judah. Judah, above all, should have shared Nehemiah's vision to rebuild, but they lacked vision and commitment.

W0736 We have tremendous freedom in Christ. So much so that we can actually "hang" ourselves. It is so easy to live our Christian walks according to prevailing culture. "When in Rome. . .” But, the prevailing culture is always changing. What is acceptable to society or a particular group may actually cause my fall. The Jews are already beginning to fall back into old habits. They are taking advantage of each other during a very difficult time of famine.
