New Sounds from WNYC show

New Sounds from WNYC

Summary: New Sounds is unlike any radio show you've ever heard: a whirlwind tour of new and unusual music from all corners of the globe. New Sounds combs recent recordings for one of the most informative and compelling hours on radio, and aims to make the world smaller. For over 25 years, host John Schaefer has been finding the melody in the rainforest and the rhythm in an orchestra of tin cans. Defying rigid categorization and genre pigeonholing, New Sounds offers new ways to hear the ancient language of song. With guest musicians from David Byrne to Meredith Monk to Ravi Shankar to Philip Glass to Christopher O'Riley to Bang On A Can, Schaefer presents performances (both in-studio and from the New Sounds Live concert series) and premieres new works from the classic and operatic to folk and jazz, and anything else in between. Each show has a theme, ranging from post-rock to klezmer to African blues to minimalism. The variety of cultures and styles explored is boundless. Music you may not have known existed and now can't live without.

A Musical Babel (Special Podcast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Unlikely combinations of cultures and traditional musics give a global perspective on this New Sounds program.  Listen to a musical portrayal of an imaginary Syria, "Syriana." It's a London-based ensemble with musicians from Syria and parts of the Near East, featuring the Pan-Arab Strings of Damascus.  There's also music by sax player Uri Gurvich from his forthcoming record, “BabEl,” a mixture of oud  and North African percussion with some saxophone, piano, bass and drums. Hear the sounds of Fado creep into the original Klezmer tunes by the Portuguese band Melech Mechaya, as well as something from the Manchester-based quartet, Ducie, where a bit of flamenco is worked in to the lilting folk music of the British Isles.  Also, musicians from Belgium and Burkina Faso come together as the Zita Swoon Groupa and Ballake Sissoko collaborates on some music from a group out of southern Italy with Greek roots, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino.  And more.   Piano Grooves (Special Podcast - We're Back!) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For this New Sounds Special Podcast*, listen to a few groove-based pieces for piano and electronics, including brand-new music from Jace Clayton (aka DJ Rupture) which looks back to an outsider figure of “Downtown” Manhattan scene in the 1980’s – Julius Eastman, the late gay African American composer, pianist, vocalist, and dancer. Eastman’s work forms the basis of Clayton’s album; two long works – one involving the “n” word, and “Gay Guerilla.” Hear the conclusion of “Gay Guerrilla” arranged for two pianos and electronics, along with the latest from Brandt Bauer Frick, and 11-musician strong Berlin-based ensemble who reproduce rhythms and sounds of electronic dance music (EDM) mostly acoustically. Plus, the ritualistic groove of pianist Nik Bärtsch's Ronin, a chamber jazz outfit and something new from the trio called Dawn of Midi.  And more. *It's been quite some time since we were able to gather enough permissions to clear an entire podcast for New Sounds.  Special thanks to our New Sounds Spring Intern, Caroline, for her help in securing these permissions and for producing the podcast.  PROGRAM #3443, Piano Grooves(First aired on 3/19/2013)                                        ARTIST(S) RECORDING CUT(S) SOURCE Brandt Brauer Frick Miami Miami Titles, excerpt [1:00] !K7 Records k7.greedbag.com/buy/miami-81 www.brandtbrauerfrick.de Jace Clayton The Julius Eastman Memory Depot Gay Guerilla, Part 5 [6:13] New Amsterdam Records NWAM0445 newamsterdamrecords.com Due out March 26, 2013.  Soldier Songs - Special Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For this New Sounds, composer and founder of the new music group Newspeak, David T. Little, joins John Schaefer to present selections from his hour-long multimedia one-man opera, “Soldier Songs.” The work is in three acts, which explore the perceptions of war throughout the character’s life; Youth – where war is a game, Warrior - where war is reality, and Elder - which is more of a philosophical approach to war.  Games are at the heart of the work, as evidenced by the accompanying visuals - realistic-looking video game imagery by an animator. For background, Little drew from interviews with veterans, as well as enlisted friends and family.  The sound-world of "Soldier Songs," although influenced by the stories collected (where one soldier tells of listening to Metallica on his iPod) reflects both Little’s interests in musical theatre and his experience as a heavy metal drummer.  (Illusions to “Black Metal” and “Death Metal” are actually referring to weapons, not the genres of metal.)  We’ll hear selections from each of the three parts of the opera, including “Still Life with Tank and iPod” from the Warrior section, “Real American Heroes” from the Child section, and “Hunting Emmanuel Goldstein” from the Elder portion, (which, as Little explains, is the nod to George Orwell’s “1984”in the piece.)  Chamber Music with a Groove (special podcast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

On this edition of New Sounds, hear some chamber music by composer Marc Mellits with a populist bent.  We’ll sample his work, “Tight Sweater," which contains traces of funk, echoes of rock, and minimalism's rapidly shifting patterns of notes and interlocking rhythms.  With the provocative and whimsical titles, ("Exposed Zipper," “Pickle Trousers” and “Mechanically Separated Chicken Parts”) the movements are compact and alarmingly catchy. The group Real Quiet — pianist Andrew Russo, cellist Felix Fan, and percussionist David Cossin — brings the perky and spiky cartoon-like energy to bear.  There’s that bit of post-minimalist ear candy, and other post-minimalist chamber works by the likes of Robert Davidson. There’s an hour of music for far-off places on this New Sounds program.  Listen to a work written by Princeton professor Paul Lansky, called “Travel Diary.”  From a new recording by the Meehan/Perkins Duo, the work is a "kind of meditation on travel particularly for those who don't do it that much." Parts were inspired by an actual cross-country trip taken by the composer and his family, wrong turns and a younger child asking "Are we there yet?"
