New Sounds from WNYC show

Summary: From the melodious inflections of phone messages, listen to a number of works sourcing voicemails, most from tape(!) on this New Sounds program. Hear Irish composer Roger Doyle’s “Memento Mori,” composed around intimate verbal time capsules culled from various answering machine messages of Doyle's family, close friends and partners, all of them recorded and preserved in the late 80's. Then listen to some answering machine message songs, from Jocelyn Pook’s "Portraits in Absentia."  Plus, Missy Mazzoli's "I am coming for my things," also from a phone message as its source.            PROGRAM #3320 Music from Telephone Answering Machines  (First aired on 4/3/2012)                                                    ARTIST(S) RECORDING CUT(S) SOURCE Penguin Café Orchestra Penguin Café Orchestra Telephone And Rubber Band [2:00] EEG CD 11 www.penguincafe.com Jocelyn Pook Portraits in Absentia Messages [2:23] Private CD, not commercially available.  Stream it at Pook's website, www.jocelynpook.com Roger Doyle Chalant – Memento Mori Memento Mori: It's very serious [3:09] Psychonavigation PSY 052 www.psychonavigation.com www.rogerdoyle.com Jocelyn Pook Portraits in Absentia Parvin & Trevor's Journey [4:50] Arsenal/Trevor’s Conversion [5:20] Private CD, not commercially available.
