What are they worried about? Let us find out the differences between a permanent position and contract jobs, the gap in between, and the struggles of contract workers. Permanent employees, or regular employees, have direct work contracts with the employer and work full-time without specifying the end of their employment. Any forms of employment other than that are called irregular employees and can be classified as temporary, part-time, and non-standard employees. Recently, "temporary contract workers," or those whose period of employment has already been pre-determined on contract, have become a hot issue. Contract employment is a typical form of irregular employment, where contract workers do not receive the same treatment as regular employees, although they burden the same workload. They also receive a significantly lower salary than standard employees, and they do not receive the same welfare benefits as standard employees. In addition, contract workers are viewed as "those who will be leaving one day," rather than "those who will work long term," so they experience subtle discriminations as well. Furthermore, they cannot help but worry about their future after their two-year contract is over, as they have no idea whether they will be accepted as a standard employee, have their contract extended, or will have to leave the office. Speaking of the heartache of contract workers, we must discuss cartoonist Tae-ho Yoon's his cartoon "Misaeng." The main character, Geurae Jang, is a contract worker who must struggle to become a regular worker only to eventually fail, while his colleagues with standard contracts focus mainly on getting promoted by receiving good grades on their personnel evaluations. This cartoon's spot-on portrayal of the anxieties and sorrows that contract workers experience due to the instability of their employment won the sympathy of many readers. ----Romanization---- hangugui chwieobnaneul ttulhgo dangdanghi sahoesaenghwareul sijaghage doeeotneunde, chughaneun keonyeonk jeonggyujiki anin gyeyagjikeuro ipsahage doen jeomeul uryeohasineun bundeuri juwie ganok inneyo. wae geureonji geu iyuga gunggeumhasidaguyo? jeonggyujikgwa bijeonggyujikui chaijeomgwa, geu saie jonjaehaneun goerikam, geurigo geuro inae balsaenghaneun gyeyagjik geunrojaui aehwaneul salpyeobodorok hapsida. jeonggyujikeun goyonggikani jongryodoeneun sijeomeul miri jeonghaji ango jeoniljero ilhamyeo goyongjuwa geunrojaga jikjeop goyonggyeyageul maejneun ge [...]

Don't forget to stop by KoreanClass101.com for more great Korean Language Learning Resources! “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year~~~” 새해 복 많이 받으세요~~ ----English---- A Goose's Dream KoreanClass101.com listeners, did you have a good week? I'm always doing well, thanks to you guys. I was debating which song I should choose for this last entry, and I decided to go with the theme of a dream and I chose "A Goose's Dream." Why did I choose this song? After we go over the meaning of the lyrics together, I hope that you'll ask me this question again. A Goose's Dream "I once had a dream... Even though I've been thrown away, torn and shabby, my dream is still buried deep in my heart... Even when people were talking and laughing behind my back, I had to put up with it. No. I could bear it for that day... People always speak to me in a worried tone. 'An empty dream can become poisonous.' 'Everything in this world has already been written.' 'Life is a reality you can't go back to.' That's right. I have a dream. I believe in that dream. Watch over me as I break down his cold wall of fate in front of me. I'll be able to break down any obstacles and I believe that I'll be able to fly toward the clear, blue sky. As long as I have a dream, this rough and intense reality will not hold me back. I believe in my dream. Watch over me!" What do you all think? Can you get a sense of what this song is about? Besides caring about other people's right and wrong, as we live life, as we live our reality, we've been bullied in school, weeded out of society, and we've even been neglected by our friends and family. We've all tasted the bitterness of our fate and reality in our lives during each of those times... Then a "goose" will say this to you after these periods of frustration...(A goose's voice) "Don't stop dreaming!" "Don't ever give up on your dreams!" That's right. The moment you give up on your dreams, that wall you call "fate" will seem more distant and impossible to reach... However, as long as you don't give up on that dream, that wall of "fate," you'll see a long rope coming down from that wall. And as long as you have that long ro [...]
