The Art of Retouching - Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom Retouching Tutorials

Summary: There are many professional image retouchers, professional retouching websites, and photoshop tutorials that teach a style of retouching that I would refer to as ‘glamour’. The reason I call it ‘glamour’ is because they take a perfectly normal photograph, usually of a model, and then they over exaggerate all the different aspects of the image. For example, the whites are blown out, the contrast is sharp, the colors are over saturated, and the overall image looks very stylized.`` ``The type of photo editing that we do here is not like that at all. Our work is more grounded. We feel that we do our best work, when you can’t tell that we did anything at all. Our photoshop techniques don’t exaggerate the blowouts, we actually fil in the blowouts, leaving the detail and better print reproduction.````Overall, our look is more natural, and that’s what we’re looking to teach. By backing away from the overkill, you’re left with something that looks realistic, and believable. Once you understand the fundamentals of image editing, you can then let your creative side free.

Spotting Images | Photoshop Basic Tutorial | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 4:41

This Adobe Photoshop tutorial describes what spotting images means, and how to do it. In short, spotting simply means that you are going to remove any extra dust spots, or other very quick dirt removal. While it usually means dust from the camera lens, it could also mean quickly removing any other sort of blemishes from the picture, like lint on clothing or freckles. Again, the real key is that it is quick, and usually takes less than 10 minutes, and less than 5 minutes is even better. Ideally, this would be the very first thing done to an image, before any other sort of retouching is done. All you need to do is create a new layer, select one of the cloning tools, and begin removing anything that doesn't belong. Spotting Images should be done for every picture you start working on.

High Pass and Low Pass | Photoshop Advanced Tutorial | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 8:34

This Adobe Photoshop Cloning Tutorial is about the High Pass and Low Pass Frequency Separation method of cloning. We covered many different topics in our Photoshop Extended Cloning Video Tutorial, but we wanted to give you this advanced way to clone, as a sample of the content you can find in the full video. If you use the Clone Stamp Tool, Healing Brush, or Spot Healing Brush straight onto a layer, you are making an exact clone with little control over the fine details. If you approach your clone with a High Pass Layer for texture, and a Low Pass layer for color and tone, you greatly increase your ability to soften or remove skin blemishes, facial hair, and even pores, without a dreaded repeating pattern. This is used by professional retouchers who need to create porcelain skin for the models. This is one of the very few ways of achieving this level of high precision, perfect skin retouching.

Spot Channels | Photoshop Advanced Tutorial | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 7:35

This Adobe Photoshop tutorial video will introduce Spot Channels. This is the third of four videos about working with channels. We will explain what Spot Channels are, and how they differ from regular Color Channels. Before you watch this video, we recommend you watch the previous Adobe Photoshop tutorial about Color Channels and Alpha Channels, and you can then follow this one with the Channel Mixer. Spot colors are intended to be used with CMYK for printing. These will allow you to add extra colors for press such as PMS, create “bump plates”, or for detailed varnishes. The can be used to add a 5th color to a CMYK print run, or limit the image to a two color duotone image. Used with Quark Express or Adobe inDesign, either of the programs just mentioned can select, and print, the Spot Channel that was created in Photoshop.
