Summary: There are many professional image retouchers, professional retouching websites, and photoshop tutorials that teach a style of retouching that I would refer to as ‘glamour’. The reason I call it ‘glamour’ is because they take a perfectly normal photograph, usually of a model, and then they over exaggerate all the different aspects of the image. For example, the whites are blown out, the contrast is sharp, the colors are over saturated, and the overall image looks very stylized.`` ``The type of photo editing that we do here is not like that at all. Our work is more grounded. We feel that we do our best work, when you can’t tell that we did anything at all. Our photoshop techniques don’t exaggerate the blowouts, we actually fil in the blowouts, leaving the detail and better print reproduction.````Overall, our look is more natural, and that’s what we’re looking to teach. This is a shortened Imagenomic Portraiture Tutorial for people who want a quick tutorial. While the content is the same at it's core, the version here is less than half the time, and focuses on the most important details of how I use the software. Now that we’ve spent some time delving into the twists and turns of JPGs and RAWs, it’s time for us to show you some differences of the two formats when it comes to editing an actual picture. You already know by now that because JPGs have a smaller file size, it also means that they can’t handle the same amount of information on colors as much as the RAW file can. This results to banding whenever you zoom in on a JPG photo.

When you shoot, the picture taken by your DSLR Camera is stored in the RAW File Format, which essentially keeps your image quality exactly as the camera sees it. The Raw file is made up of ones and zeroes that your computer can process. If you know little about the Raw File Format, then you will soon discover why professionals use it... exclusively.

Short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPEG pictures are compressed images that have the .jpg file extension. Basically, JPEGs or JPGs compress images in order to make their file sizes smaller. The most annoying thing about sending files and pictures online or via email, is to find that your file attachments are too big; and we wouldn’t want that now, would we? Waiting all that time trying to send over files only to have them rejected due to file size…JPGs solve that issue by reducing image file sizes so that they don’t take up too much space, be it in your hard drive or USB or in your camera.

This is an Adobe Photoshop Video tutorial that explains Tonal Range, and the difference between Levels and Curves. While each of these topics is technically different, they each work with the same basic principals, so I thought it would be helpful to understand them, if I covered them all at the same time. Before you seriously get started working with RAW Files, you need to understand Tonal Range, and how the different Sliders affect different aspects of the image.
Color Range tool is a crucial aspect of Photoshop Masking, that many people have difficulties using. The tool plays a significant role in selecting groups of color areas, that need to be adjusted separately in a particular image. Color Range has the quickest, and simplest options available for selecting complex patterns as well. In addition, you are able to preview your selection, and pick the best results, before committing to the task.
Properly masking out an image in Adobe Photoshop is often done using one of the simple selection tools like Magic Wand or Lasso. This is simply the wrong approach. You should be using Color Range and the QuickMask. In this video for beginners, I will slowly explain how to use both these tools to make simple and complex selections.
