Part 2 - A Chat with John Crye, Hollywood Film Producer and Director | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:50:05

Welcome to Part 2 of the conversation with film director John Crye. When John first came to Los Angeles in 95, John had no idea what development was. He had been a stage actor and theater producer in Boston but always had a fascination with film. John Crye's first job was at Summit Entertainment, first as a script reader and then an assistant in the creative department. It was then he learned the importance of the “gatekeepers,” those hard-working folks on the frontlines who are the first and often last audience that a script ever has. His work at Summit brought him to the attention of two investors who hired him to help them form a new independent production company, Newmarket Films. He took the job of creative director and brought in a filmmaker friend as head of the production. In their blissful ignorance, the first film they developed and produced had no stars, half of it was black and white, and the structure was a horseshoe-shaped puzzle box. It was called “Memento,” and it was the second feature of a neophyte auteur named Christopher Nolan. It was bold and daring, and then nobody in the business wanted to distribute it. Fortunately, Newmarket Films stood behind the film and built a distribution arm to support it. So began Newmarket’s run of indie classics, including “Donnie Darko - Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore,” “Monster - Charlize Theron,” “The Prestige - Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlet Johansson,” “The Mexican - Brad Pitt & Julia Roberts,” and “The Passion of the Christ - Directed by Mel Gibson, James Caviezel, Monica Bellucci,” Crye's latest project - Chance is a 2020 American drama film directed by John B. Crye and starring Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Weeds, Stranger Things). Which is based on the true story of Chance Smith, a teenager from Ohio who took his own life.  The Dos and Donts - On How to Contact Music Supervisors and Music Consultants... | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:05

In this week's episode, we take a look at the DO'S and DON'TS of music supervision. A music supervisor is a person who combines music and visual media together. According to The Guild of Music Supervisors, a music supervisor is “a qualified professional who oversees all music-related aspects of film, television, advertising, video games, and other existing or emerging visual media platforms.” In the musical theatre industry, a music supervisor is often responsible for managing a team of music directors working on any number of musical productions at any one time. Music supervisors will often narrow down their focus to a few publishing companies, agents, labels, artists that they know and trust – particularly important. This helps them get deals done more quickly and efficiently, with very little fuss. Before you contact a music supervisor, make sure you know their work, this is especially important, I know it may sound basic. Blindly sending “listen to my music!” emails are a complete waste of their time and yours. Just like your music has its own sound, many music supervisors have their own brand and distinctive credits as well. Demonstrate that you researched the supervisor with a crafted subject line in your initial email. If your brand of COUNTRY OR POP is perfect for a particular Netflix, Disney, or Amazon series, change up your email or social media introduction with a title, for example: “POP/Country for the nightclub scenes with band.” The music supervisor on the receiving end will very much appreciate that you are paying attention, this is good brownie points to start you off.  We chat with Canadian Pianist & Composer Martin Mayer. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:32:26

This week on The Entertainment Engine we welcome Canadian pianist and composer Martin Mayer, who is described as "Canada's Prince of Piano" – by Beijing Times, China's leading English-language newspaper. Born in the Czech Republic, and now based in Vancouver, Canada, his music has been defined as instrumental fusion – a combination of smooth jazz, classical, pop, and rock. Mayer's European roots add a good share of thoughtful and longing soul, his North American education contributes a healthy dose of high-octane energy. An explosive mix.  Martin Mayer’s recordings include Destinations (1998), Live In Concert (2000, nominated for "Outstanding Instrumental Album" at the Prairie Music Awards), This is Who I Am (2003, Nominated for "Outstanding Instrumental Album" at the WCMA Awards), the 2009 single The Orphan Boy, a year-long fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, Alone (2010), Unbreakable (2018) and the holiday single Carol of the Bells (2020). The classically-trained pianist spearheaded the launch of his instrumental fusion career in true music industry fashion. He risked a $35,000 bank loan to mount and produce his dream debut concert – complete with a 20-piece orchestra, film, and live recording crew. That risk paid off when the Live in Concert album garnered him his first music award nomination and opened the doors to his premiere international tour. A Chinese Arts Agency took Martin Mayer on a 16-city six-week-long concert tour in mainland China in 2001. It would become the biggest tour of any artist in China's modern history, and all of his tour dates since then would be sold out. He entertained thousands in concert and millions on Chinese TV.  A Guide to Planning Music Festivals and Concerts! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:24

In this podcast episode we are looking at how to put on a successful music festival in the GLOBAL pandemic, is this possible, or is this a step too far? Let us take a closer look - A lot of work goes into planning a music festival, from setting your goals to securing your team to then making it all happen. Even more so this year will require more planning and preparation to ensure that everyone has an amazing and safe experience at your festival.  Some points to consider for festival planning; Write an executive summary: This is a thorough yet succinct overview of your event and acts as an introduction to both your festival and you with your team, the event creator. It should be a minimum of 1/2 pages covering the following: What your event is and where/when it will take place, Why you are planning this festival, Your festival’s mission and overall objectives, How it benefits the local community, Your estimated income and expenditure from year 1 to year 5 (guide).  Add Complete background & history: This gives you the opportunity to go more in-depth about your event’s history and your own background, including experience and event successes. (if this is your first event — then your history is ltd, but you still need to provide all background info). Why do you want to plan a festival? What will it add to, and not just your bank balance, but the people attending, the event sponsors the investors, brands, and the local community? Planning a festival is not for the faint-hearted and this is your chance to show why you are fully committed to this process. If you have worked on any festivals in the past include information, images, and testimonials. You should also use this section to position your festival in the market. What are you bringing to the table that no one else has covered before, really think hard about all this!  Keep Creating - Discussing ways artists and bands can keep proactive during the pandemic | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:19:32

In this episode, Pete and BeX discuss different ways artists and bands can keep proactive during the pandemic. We look at the live sector and how this has been affected since the Covid-19 outbreak. So we look at time management, and how to use the time wisely to plan and maximise online activity, websites, social media, marketing, online concerts/streaming, creating new content, as people all over the world are consuming much more music and content on various platforms. So it's important to stay active online and keep creating content to share with the world! Over the past 12 months, the music industry has been hit very hard by coronavirus with live performance revenue the biggest casualty so far, with the loss of all concerts and festivals. The global music industry is worth over $50 billion, with two major income streams. The first is live music, which makes up over 50% of total revenues and is derived mostly from ticket sales from live shows. The second, recorded music, combines revenue from streaming, digital downloads, physical sales, and synchronization revenues (licensing of music for movies, games, TV, and advertising). This shows a twelve-month shutdown is believed to cost the music industry more than $10bn in sponsorships, with even longer delays expected being for the live sector. But, the industry as ever is fighting back with new ways to monetize music consumption: For example; Fortnite hosted a live rap concert that attracted up to 30+ million live viewers, now that is impressive! Looking to the long-term, the main core value chain of the music industry is likely to remain largely unchanged. Professional artists release music via the big record labels — UMG, Sony Music, or Warner Music — or alternatively through an independent publisher and label!.
