The growth of the Gothic branch with bands like The Damned, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure and Joy Division setting the course for what was ahead. The Second wave of Ska was gaining momentum with the creation of Two-Tone Records and the emergence of The Specials. And, the sound of Hardcore punk because of bands like The Germs were starting to take root in cities across the world. Bands like U2 were emerging from the ashes of punk and creating a fresh new sound. Patti Smith, Kraftwerk and Gary Numan helped facilitate change as well.
