Would you mind talking about issues that you’ve encountered when dusting wall voids and how you’ve overcome them? Such as, what happens when paint seals and electrical outlet and removing it will rip off the paint. Do you treat the plumbing area behind the toilets and if so do you drill and patch? Do customers ever have issues with this? Keep you podcasts up! Would love one on hunting spiders. I can call in with my question but I’d rather be known as a “listener of the show” lol. We are mostly concerned with what the customer thinks if they see razor marks around the outlets as an example or patch marks in their walls. When you say you do plumbing, are you taking about all wall voids that contain a water pipe? If there is no easy way to access the void do you skip it? I’ll call in tomorrow for you. We have questions based on your non-repellent podcast too. We feel like our entire product line needs to be non-repellent now for general pest maintenance. Good stuff!  Scheduling Field Service Software For Pest Control Business | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:02

Scheduling Field Service Software For Pest Control Business When is was looking for a field service software for my pest control business I researched 28 field service software’s over a 2 year period and based on my criteria I have come up with the following. If you would like to be part of the pest geek society you can call us at 707-395-7378 Shout out Jane Parsons Dallas TX PestScholar @PestScholar Training and support for Core and More. Tech Tip Crawling in crawl space performing a bedbug job you need to protect yourself from taking home a pest or disease. In the News People are not the only ones in danger of getting mosquito borne disease apparently horses in Texas are at great risk. Dr. Terry Hensley, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service veterinarian and Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory assistant agency director in College Station, “Hensley advises horse owners to work with their veterinarians and vaccinate against the core diseases: West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis and western equine encephalitis. Hensley said the American Association of Equine Practitioners recommends vaccinating for these three diseases along with rabies and tetanus.“ “In 2015 Texas experienced a high number of West Nile cases in the western part of the state as well as the Panhandle and Gulf Coast regions. Cases of eastern equine encephalitis were reported in Southeast Texas, particularly in bayou areas where there are large amounts of standing water that can harbor mosquito populations.” Maybe you can have a ride up clinic where you can get your shots like you do at pharmacies for flu vaccines. http://ipmsouth.com/2016/02/18/texas-horse-owners-encouraged-to-vaccinate-in-preventing-mosquito-borne-neurologic-diseases/ Just a reminder the pest geek podcast is sponsored in part by my wallet and Audible if you like good audio content get a free audio book by visiting

Which is the best software to use for running your pest control? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:21

Which is the best software to use for running your pest control Which is the best software to use for running your pest control business, this is probably one of the top 5 questions I get asked from PMP’s both online email and in person. Shawn McGill McGill Pest Management Solutions 06in Kewanee, Illinois Brownyard Group @PCOpro Insurance policy to meet the complex needs of Pest Control Operators (PCO) Tech Tip Are you sensitive to dust and allergens A 3M Particulate Respirator can help providing at least 95% filtration efficiency against solid and liquid aerosols that do not contain oil. http://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-Particulate-Respirator-20-Pack-8210PPB1-A/100583556 $21.47 /package of 20 Model # 8210PPB1-A My answer is simple the best software to use for invoicing and accounting is quickbooks, I have been using accounting software since the late 80’s I used peachetree for my first business and later switched to quickbooks in the mid 90s now we use quickbooks online. For most people this is not as simple or easy in the age of smartphones and social media there are so many that have resisted using software to automate their business mostly because of several mayor factors. The thought of converting from paper invoices and spreadsheets to learning how to use software intimidate most solopreneur PMP’s. If there is one thing a tech hates is doing paperwork, it’s time consuming and detracts from doing what makes money, serving a client. If you’re a solopreneur meaning you do the sales, service and all the admin stuff like invoicing, deposits, and statements this will get very taxing very quick. A software program like quickbooks online will free up 10 to 15 hours per week that you can invest in more business, yourself or your family. Here is the advantage of software it frees you up to get the only thing you can’t buy, Time. When you do paper invoices in the field and then have to input them into quickbooks desktop you are doing twice the work spending twice the time. If you are lean or have lean thinking what could you do with an extra 5 minutes per customer per day week or month? With my quickbooks online software you can post the invoice in the field mail it to your customers and batch print at the office if the customer wants a paper invoice. Integration with merchant account online payment make it a snap there is no reconciling, the payment is automatically credited to the customers account. Classes are a great feature because you can create a separate pl for each route. Territories can be tracked by city, zip or counties however you decide. If you have multiple branches one online software. It eliminates the need to have an admin for 1 or more route business.

Blogging to get new customers is it worth it? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:11

Blogging to get new customers is it worth it? I have been blogging for just over a year and half now and created only about 100 article most have produced nothing in the form of new customers while others have received thousands of readers in so I asked myself is blogging to get new customers worth it? Adam Montgomery Lives in Northport, Alabama thanks for the like on FaceBook ZoeconCentralLS zoecon.com is following us on Twitter Tech Tip Magnetic Glove/Tissue Dispenser http://www.harborfreight.com/magnetic-glovetissue-dispenser-69322.html $13.99 It took me a year to write my first 50 post, I had difficulty finding topics, sitting down to focus on writing, performing keyword research, editing images, finding images. I had to force myself to write. I have to admit that I am a terrible writers, I hated writing, but after writing over 100 blog posts in one year I have to say my writing has gotten better and I now look forward to writing to the point that I have challenged myself to write 1000 blog posts with a goal of writing a minimum of 300 posts this year. Most blogs on blogging focus on the online world online marketing of ideas and how to sell the next great program, software, app or product. So most people in service business cannot relate to blogging as a way to get new customers. Why with such dismal success would I continue investing my time in writing blogs when 99% of the people reading my blog will never call me for a service. 3 reasons why I write 1 SEO value, 20 blog posts written around one topic will make my target pages rank better. 2 being heard in a noisy world There are a lot of pest control blogs out there written by either bloggers with no real world experience on how to control a pest and second other pest control companies blogs that only tell you what the problem is and how they are only solution. People who read a pest control blog are not reading it so they can be informed and have a new topic to talk about over dinner; they are reading a pest control blog because they have a problem and are trying to solve it themselves. Why would I aid a do it yourselfer do something themselves? It’s self defeating, every study for 50 years tells us that only 20% of households purchase pest control service the other 80% do it themselves they always have and always will so why spend time on someone that will probably never buy from me. It’s simple I want to help people, helping people is something that characterizes me, with so much bad info out there shame on me if i allow it and do nothing about it. 3 Leads If you read a blog post and think what you are about to do is easy and it turns out it’s more difficult than you thought you might be one I convert or you may decide to call a local company instead so it helps the industry as a whole. Blogging is not about you it’s about helping someone else, if you help enough other people get what they want you will get what you want. You never know what reciprocal effect you will get from a blog it could be a write up in the media, and article that goes viral, or a positive review becouse you helped someone. Selling and marketing is a numbers game The one with the most wins more often, from everything I’ve read from dozens of stories there blog really took off after 1000 thousand blogs,  so discipline, persistence, endurance is the key to any goal. The numbers are simple most blog post you write will not be read by anyone, but if you write a blog that solves problems for people that might...

A strategic sales plan could help you land better clients | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:19

A strategic sales plan could help you land better clients Tech Tip SalesForce is the #1 CRM Software on the market http://www.salesforce.com/ You have read articles or heard of how it takes 12 sales calls to close a sale. to some this is just nuts I mean we close a sale in 1 to 3 calls. But most of those statistics are based on strategic sales. To most a typical sale is you meet someone on the street that sees you truck and says I have a pest problem can you come by and give me an estimate, or you go door knocking and 3 of the five doors bought your pest control. In strategic sales you decide on the customers you want and then develop a strategy on how you will acquire those customers. A strategic sales strategy may be as simple as farming an area you want new customers in You perform a service for a customer in an upscale neighborhood where all the resident have pretty much the same buying power so every time you service that account you target the same 10 homes on the block. You first time may leave a card on the door. The next time you yea leave a flyer. The third time you get the address and send a letter stating how your customer the neighborhood is enjoying your services. By now you have made 3 calls, in a year it doesn’t matter the order it matters that you are in front of your select customers. What is 3 customers in a year down the block worth to you. That’s a 30% market penetration in one block it’s a lot easier to repeat that process one block over with brand recognition. When I can tell a customer that we have 75 customers in this development alone and I take them to see the properties that’s impressive. That’s market petration. For example you want to start servicing restaurants you can get a list of all the restaurants in your territory. Make an initial introduction call find out who is the buyer. Follow that up with a sales letter the next day in the mail. In one week stop in find out when pest control contract ends Send a post card to the buyer in 30 days. Repeat the process all over again. Stay in front of your target audience, gather intelligence, make a presentation, ask for the sale. At one point something will happen that will give you the opportunity to get the contract by creating top of mind awareness of your brand in the mind of the prospect. You decide to start visiting them one by one and they all turn you down how many times and ways and how many people do you have to talk to until you get a presentation scheduled prepare a proposal and close the sale the average number is 12. Most people will give up after about three.

With a compliance date of February 26, 2019 to meet all the new label requirements. Why where the changes made to 25b FIFRA Exempt Pesticides Here is the Official explanation from the EPA “EPA is revising its regulations to more clearly describe the active and inert ingredients permitted in products eligible for the minimum risk pesticide exemption (40 CFR 152.25(f)). EPA is doing this by codifying the inert ingredients list and reformatting the active and inert ingredients lists, adding specific chemical identifiers, where available, for each eligible active and inert ingredient. These identifiers, through the use of Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Numbers (CAS Nos.), will make it easier for manufacturers, the public, and Federal, state, and tribal inspectors to determine the specific chemical substances that are permitted in minimum risk pesticide products. EPA is also modifying the labeling requirements in the exemption to require the use of a designated label display name for each ingredient in the lists of ingredients on minimum risk pesticide product labels, and to require producers to provide contact information on their products’ labels. EPA is finalizing most of the regulatory text that was proposed in the Federal Register of December 31, 2012 (Ref. 1), with changes based on the comments submitted to the Agency.” Source: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/final-rule-will-clarify-and-improve-transparency-ingredients-minimum-risk-pesticide Official Final Ruling Minimum Risk Exemption Revisions http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=EPA-HQ-OPP-2010-0305-0047 Code of Federal Regulations Title 40 – Protection of Environment § 152.25 Exemptions for pesticides of a character not requiring FIFRA regulation. https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2013-title40-vol25/xml/CFR-2013-title40-vol25-sec152-25.xml What are The Conditions For Exempt Status http://www.epa.gov/minimum-risk-pesticides/conditions-minimum-risk-pesticides What are Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Numbers (CAS Nos.) Mirror Hey, Frank this is Victor with Brightside Pest Control in San Antonio, Texas. I just want to drop you a note and say thank you very much for putting on your podcast very very informative. I’m I hang out also have another reason to look forward to Mondays I wanted to post a quick question to you. I’ve been in business right at a year now, and it’s growing faster than I thought it would it’s doing really really well and it’s pretty exciting but the question. I have is how do you deal with scheduling I cover the entire San Antonio Market by myself so I’d try to group my customers of course into one day in this the total one day and not zip code and I have so many customers that. Are very very quick to ask for a reschedule and I end up dead heading all over town, and I just wanted to ask you guys. How how you or or some of your people might deal with that. Also getting people to sign once they’ve signed up, and you do your first service and they’re doing and they agreed to going to every other month service. How do you deal with keeping them there? I have so many customers that are very excited the first service, and they you say yes, they want to sign up. I don’t hold anybody to any type of contract, but it’s so quick for the second or third or fourth service to get a cancellation, and I would love some input on how to deal with stuff like that once again. Thanks for doing what you do have a great day.

Yo man I am not going to jail for you or anybody | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:57

Yo man I am not going to jail for you or anybody This is on every pesticide label “DIRECTIONS FOR USE” “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” But what does it mean? The label is the law, if you use that product in any other way other than what is specified on that label, you are in violation of Federal Law and could be fined or imprisoned or both. If you are an unlicensed untrained user of the pesticide and you apply it to commercial structure you could be violating state and federal laws and not even know, because you placed other people at risk unforgettably for you ignorance is no excuse for the law. Using the same product in same way from a residential, exterior, broadcast way into an interior commercial food establishment could violate the law cause serious contamination to surfaces and food and put the public at risk. Case Study: The US Department of Justice website United States v. Bio-Tech Management Inc. The indictment states that From October 2005 – through June 2009, Steven Murray directed the technicians of Bio-Tech Management Inc., to use Termidor indoors in nursing homes which is contrary to the label which is a violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). It was only after the Georgia Department of Agriculture inquired that Murray told several of his employees make changes in the service reports in an effort to cover up the misuse of Termidor. Both Steven Murray and Bio-Tech pleaded guilty to conspiracy, FIFRA violations, false statements, and mail fraud. Murray was sentenced to 24 months of prison fined $7,500 fine, Bio-Tech was fined $50,000 3 years of probation. http://www.justice.gov/enrd/prosecution-federal-pollution-crimes Keep accurate records of chemical active ingredient, brand, location, target pest and type of application, record a start date and a termination date for the customer agreement. Mike David Silvas from Riverside California thanks for Following us on facebook. Suburban Pest Yonkers, NY @SuburbanPC thanks for following us on twiter Non Repellents work differently than repellent insecticide by not killing the insects on contact and not disrupting the pheromone trails allowing insect to travel freely allowing more insects to pick up more of the active ingredient and taking it back to there nesting sites allowing for more kills. Check out the possible myth about repellency Since they don’t kill on contact they are not for a quick knockdown but better for maintenance and prevention or in conjunction with baits when other pest problems require immediate attention or with compound services. You will have to explain them to customers because you may get call backs saying you where just here and sprayed and I have ants still crawling all over the place. Class 2 Gaba-Gated Chloride Channel Blockers Termidor fipronil Class 4 Neonicotenoid Alpine WSG ingredient Dinotefuran, Safari Optigard FLEX Thiamethoxam, Meridian Premise imidacloprid neonicatenoids, Merit Class 3&4 Transport Mikron bifenthrin & acetamiprid pyrethroid neonicatenoid. Class 2&4 FUSE Termiticide/Insecticide contains two non-repellents imidacloprid and fipronil. http://www.controlsolutionsinc.com/products/fuse/ Class 13 Uncouplers Of Oxidative Phosphorylation Via Disruption Of The Proton Gradient. Phantom is an indoor/outdoor termiticide and insecticide chlorfenapyr The active ingredient puts the insect’s nervous system into a constant state of excitement, similar to what happens during a muscle cramp. chlorfenapyr disables an insect’s ability to produce energy by disrupting the conversion of energy at the cellular level. http://pestcontrol.basf.us/products/phantom-gpc.html Class 22 Voltage-Dependent Sodium Channel Blockers. ARILON Indoxacarb, oxadiazine insecticide. Works by blocking sodium channels in the nervous system of insects and causes mild tremors, cessation of feeding. http://www.syngentapmp.com/product/arilon-insecticide?tab=overview MagnoGrip 3-Pocket Magnetic Nail Pouch $16 Great for performing wall voids, a place to put the plate and stick the screw. http://www.magnogrip.com/index.cfm?pid=10760

Rotating Chemicals Correctly By The Class Mode of Action | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:31

Rotating Chemicals Correctly By The Class Mode of Action Are you Rotating Chemicals Correctly By The Class Mode of Action? If I ask most technicians if they are rotating chemicals correctly most would say they, but when they analyze how they are rotating they are shocked to find out they are not. When I teach at the extension service the on Best Management Practices to landscapers, municipal workers and pest control technicians. I always ask this question. What is IPM? Most of the pest control people in the room almost always answer with rotating chemicals. And that would be wrong, rotating chemicals is not part of IPM but it is part of basic sound pest management practices, so why do so few people understand it and even fewer really practice it. Most of us have not been taught to rotate chemical and if we have we have rotated with a different active ingredient only to be rotating within the same class, but in order to prevent resistance to a specific type of chemical to a completely different class with a completely different mode of action. When talking to pest control technicians I find that few understand the mode of action. To understand this lets discus the two most popular modes of action on the market for PMP’s. Pyrethroids mostly known as repellents. Class 3 Sodium Channel Modulators Acrinathrin, Allethrin, Bifenthrin, Bioallethrin, Bioallethrin S-cyclopentenyl, Bioresmethrin, Cycloprothrin, Cyfluthrin, Cyhalothrin, Cypermethrin, Cyphenothrin, Deltamethrin, Empenthrin, Esfenvalerate, Etofenprox, Fenpropathrin, Fenvalerate, Flucythrinate, Flumethrin, Halfenprox, Kadathrin, Phenothrin, Prallethrin, Pyrethrins, Pyrethrum, Resmethrin, Silafluofen, Tefluthrin, Tetramethrin, Tetramethrin, Tralomethrin, Transfluthrin, alpha-Cypermethrin, beta-Cyfluthrin, beta-Cypermethrin, Allethrin, gamma-Cyhalothrin, lambda-Cyhalothrin, tau-Fluvalinate, theta-Cypermethrin, zeta-Cypermethrin. There are 41 active ingredients in the Pyrethroids Class Plus DDT and Methoxychlor Neonicotinoids more modern known as non-repellents. Class 4 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Competitive Modulators (NACHR). Acetamiprid, Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, Imidacloprid, Nitenpyram, Thiacloprid, Thiamethoxam. 7 Active ingredients in the Neonicotinoid line but there is a total of 4 of types (NACHR) in the Class Nicotine the active ingredient is Nicotine . Sulfoximines with the active ingredient Sulfoxaflor. Butenolides active ingredient Flupyradifurone. The danger of combination products is that they combine 2 active ingredients with 2 classes together and now what do you rotate with? What is the mode of action? Did you know that there 29 classes of pesticides with hundreds of active ingredients? Do you want to know how a pesticide works to control by the mode of action a pest and what chemical active ingredients are in those classes?
