This week I’m joined by Jason “JJ” James who is the CIO for Optima Healthcare Solutions. JJ is also the author of the upcoming book “Make IT work: Practical IT guide to mergers and acquisitions.” In our conversation, JJ outlines how the CIO is similar to an anthropologist and must be a study of human tools, culture and development. We also discuss JJ’s perspective on how innovative technology is impacting the healthcare industry. During our conversation, JJ details his perspective on data including data toxicity and the value of data over time. Closing out our conversation, JJ talks about why hype is valuable and the role the CIO plays in the changing landscape.

This week I’m joined by Dave McCandless who serves as the Vice President of IT for Navis. In our conversation, Dave outlines the complicated challenges facing the shipping industry and how he is leveraging technology such as cloud computing. While vendors oversimplify the value that technology can bring, the reality can be incredibly more complicated. Dave discusses how cloud and data are playing significant roles in helping their customers. This week I’m joined by Mark Settle who is the Chief Information Officer for Okta. Mark has served as CIO for a number of companies prior to his role at Okta including IHS, BMC, Corporate Express, Arrow and Oxy. Mark is also author of the book ‘Truth from the trenches: A practical guide to the art of IT management.’ During our conversation, Mark outlines the value of IT in today’s enterprise and how IT can generate value through seismic changes. Mark outlines the challenges that many CIOs gets caught up in and how they can escape the vortex. We discuss the role of the CIO and get Mark’s very interesting and enlightening perspective on ‘data as the new oil’. Mark outlines his perspective on how technology orgs lose sight of the problem and how they can realign themselves.

This week I’m joined by Ashwin Ballal who is the Chief Information Officer for Medallia. Ashwin has served as CIO for companies of different sizes and is Medallia’s first CIO. One of Ashwin’s passions is customer experience. In our conversation, Ashwin outlines how great employee experiences lead to great customer experiences. He outlines how everyone talks about customer experience, but few know how to operationalize it. As part of the discussion, we cover the role of data, privacy and a moral compass.

This week I’m joined by Sheila Jordan who is the Chief Information Officer for Symantec and author of the book “You are NOT ruining your kids.” During our conversation, we discuss the CIO role and how the outcomes are the same, but the mechanics have changed and are more complex. Sheila talks about cleaning the garage and emphasizes that what got you here isn’t going to get you there. We discuss Sheila’s passion with diversity and how diversity ultimately leads to better business outcomes. Lastly, we talk about Sheila’s book and how to kiss your guilt goodbye.

This week I’m joined by Kevin Haskew who is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for ON Semiconductor. Kevin also serves on the board of directors for Desert Financial Credit Union. Our discussion digs into how IT is constantly changing and Kevin’s secret sauce for business success. In IT, many focus on the hard skills, but don’t spend enough time on the soft skills. Kevin discusses how he looks at the soft skills and how these are critical for understanding the business.

This week I’m joined by Steve Comstock who is the Chief Information Officer for CBS Interactive. Steve is not your typical CIO and brings a very unique perspective. Our conversation takes a markedly provocative look at the changing CIO role from technology focus to business partner. We discuss the relationship between Shadow IT and the Rosetta Stone and how humility plays a role in failure. During our discussion, we push boundaries on how the CIO as a technologist is no longer a differentiator and how the CIO evolves to the COO and CEO roles.
