Is there a difference between self publishing and independent publishing? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:21

Is there a difference between self and independent publishing? Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we discuss the different types of publishing. What are the different types and what are the differences between them? Does one have an advantage over the others? What is the difference between self and independent publishing? Listen on to hear what our guests think. There are some freebies up for grabs, so listen to the end (and see below) to find out more details. Guests on today’s show are: Sherry Meeks, Ethan Howard and Adam Sherman To summarise, here’s what was covered: There are so many terms in publishing that sound quite similar. From indie publishing, self publishing, vanity publishing, hybrid publishing, independent publishing to traditional publishing. Before you decide on the type of publishing to go for, you need to establish what your goals are and have SMART Objectives set. Traditional publishing gives you royalties in advance With vanity publishing, you pay the publisher You are classed as a publisher if you own the ISBN for your books, so you are an independent publisher You are self published if you do not own the ISBN for your books So the main difference between self and independent publishing is with regards to who is classed as the publisher of your book.  The Segilola Salami Show – Amazon book ranking | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:06

Amazon Book Ranking Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we discuss Amazon Book Ranking. First of all, what exactly is Amazon’s algorithm? How does it affect a book’s rank? What can a author do to reach top 100? Listen on to hear what the guest authors think. We also discuss the self published book Minnesota: Her Account, Her View by Nick Knardirell. There are some freebies up for grabs, so listen to the end (and see below) to find out more details. Guests on today’s show are: Nick Knardirell (twitter handle @nickknardirell) and Tara Woods Turner (twitter handle @ohtaratara) To summarise, here’s what was covered: * Books with less than 50 reviews get little attention as far as Amazon Book Ranking * A book must perform well and over a certain amount of time. Long term standing in the ranks has as much to do with longevity as it does with sales. Ratings has an indirect relationship to Amazon promotions when it accompanies sales. * Author’s should understand their market before they begin to worry about rankings. A nonfiction author in a niche market has different concerns than does a fiction writer in a crowded niche. Of course we all worry about sales and rankings as it relates to promoting and marketing our work but unless you understand what you are dealing with you will waste time and money chasing Amazon rankings that may not even benefit you. Giveaways: Nick – I would like to giveaway the Ebook version of Minnesota: Her Account, Her View. To enter for a chance to win, listeners should type WACKY RACES as a reply to the comment I will make to this video’s page on YouTube. I will choose the winner(s) at random Tara – I would love to host a giveaway here. I would like to giveaway a digital copy of Beyond Good Manners: How to Raise a Sophisticated Child as well as a complimentary editing package at BlurbPerfect.com, which helps writers come up with professional blurbs or summaries for their books. The giveaway will run through April 21 and to enter all you have to do is follow me on Twitter and mention you saw this on the Segilola Salami Show. My twitter name is @ohtaratara.  The Segilola Salami Show – Writing styles for authors | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:32:55

Writing styles for authors Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we discuss the different writing styles for authors. So what are the different writing styles for authors? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? When is best to use each type? There are some freebies up for grabs, so listen to the end to find out more details. Today’s guest is Tara Turner, she’s the author of Beyond Good Manners: How to Raise a Sophisticated Child. To summarise, writing style is a personal thing, so you have to find your voice within you. Think about the type of book you are writing too. If you were to write both fiction and non-fiction, would you use the same voice? Is it appropriate to use the same voice? You alone can make that decision. I read somewhere that a good writer is one who reads a lot. I think this holds true as reading a lot exposes you to a lot of other writing styles, thereby helping you find your voice. So please, do read up as much as you can before you make your book available finally. The Segilola Salami show is hosted by Segilola Salami who is also an author and a self publishing strategist. She provides one to one support to aspiring authors to help them self publish their own books and make a success of it. Her latest book is called Yetunde: An Ode to My Mother.  The Segilola Salami Show – How to build a street team | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:00

How to build a street team Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we talk about street teams – who makes an ideal street team member? How do you recruit members to your street team? When is the ideal time to recruit members? What are the disadvantages to having a street team? There are some freebies up for grabs, so listen to the end to find out more details. Guests on the show today are Alex Okoroji, Felice Cohen, Ling Zhang and Yolanda Tucker Here’s a summary of what was said: You can put together your street team at any time, however, it would be more beneficial to do so before you release your book. That said, promotion is an ongoing effort, so you can always start at any time, even after you have released your book. The members of your street team are your brand representatives. Yes even as an author you are a brand. So you need to make sure that the people you recruit can represent your brand effectively. Your street team can work online or offline or both. Initially, you may want to consider asking family and friends to join your street team. Then you can put up posts online on social media sites to try to recruit members. For online recruiting, create a form that people can enter their details in, most especially their name and email address. You can use Google forms for this. Once you have a few people in your street team, it is important for you to make them feel ‘loved’ and know that their new team if fun but organised. The first way to do this is to have a welcome pack ready. In your welcome pack, have a welcome letter that thanks them for joining your street team, tells them about you and your books, describes what is expected of them with the Dos and Don’ts and a calendar of your upcoming events. If possible, you can consider giving them a copy of your book. I definitely do recommend you doing so. I mean, how can one represent you effectively if they haven’t read your book? Finally, make sure that who ever you recruit is one who you are happy with representing you and your brand. If it all sounds complicated and you would like someone to talk you through what you are doing, you can contact any of the guests on today’s show or you can contact me for a one to one consultation.  The Segilola Salami Show – Monetisation Strategies for Authors | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:45

Monetisation strategies for authors Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we discuss the impact free books are having on the publishing world as well as monetisation strategies an author (or anyone with a website) can employ to generate ongoing passive income. We also discuss the self published book Sidereus Nuncius by Ethan Howard. There are some freebies up for grabs, so listen to the end to find out more details. Here’s a summary of what was said on the show: When you are starting out as an author, unless you are extremely lucky, you won’t be able to quite your day job within a month of releasing your first book. In fact, there are loads of authors, several years later who are yet to make a decent income from their writing. Just keep writing. There are some things you can do that relates to you as an author to bring in some money that is not directly from the sales of your books. Here are my suggestions: * If you have to do one thing and one thing only, get an author website. If you don’t know why this is important, do a google search. There isn’t enough time on the show to go into it. * Once you have your author website, make sure that it has a blog and you regularly post new articles to it. You can link your blog directly to your Goodreads page. You  can also link your blog to your twitter page. This way, you increase your chances of getting visitors to your blog. * Once you get traffic to your website, then you can monetise it. You cannot monetise a website that no one sees. Set up Google Adsense. It shows ads on the sides of your page and you get paid per impression CPM or per click. Check out the adsense page for more info. This is the most straightforward option. * Another option is to have banner ads on your blog. This way, you can manually add the banners of the companies you want. With adsense, you have no control over this. However, with this method, you may have to approach companies and convince them to advertise with you. * Regularly post videos on YouTube and monetise them. This is also quite straightforward to do. The main thing is to make sure you drive traffic to your videos. If no one views your videos, you don’t make any money. * Join an affiliate program, for example Amazon. Post affiliate links to relevant products on your blog. Every time someone buys something via your link, you get a small commission. That’s it, these are my top monetisation strategies in may yield results in the short term. No matter than the return on each is small initially, when you combine all, you will see a cumulative effect. But don’t just take my word for it, please do your own research. If you know of any other strategies that can give an author a payout in the short term, then please do leave a comment on my YouTube channel or via Facebook or Twitter or my blog. I would love to know them too. The Segilola Salami show is hosted by Segilola Salami who is also an author and a self publishing strategist. She provides one to one support to aspiring authors to help them self publish their own books and make a success of it. Her latest book is called Yetunde: An Ode to My Mother https://www.segilolasalami.co.uk/amazon-us/. Part of the proceeds from the sales of this book goes towards helping UK Charity Jigsaw4u. The show is about books, books and more books but specifically self published books. The show is in the form of a round table discussion.  The Segilola Salami Show – Audio books, ebooks, paperbacks and more | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:30

Audio books, ebooks, paperbacks and more Today on The Segilola Salami Show, we discuss the different formats books are available in today from paperbacks to ebooks to audio books. Does each book need to be available in multiple formats? What are the pros and cons of each of them? What are the implications for a self published author? We also review a most interesting book. Listen to find out more. Here’s the summary of what was said: Writing your book is the easiest thing you can do on this journey. My tip is you need to first establish who your target audience is and how suitable each format would be to them. So an example of what I mean is this: if you write children’s books for instance, who would do the reading? The child or the adult? How do you think it should be read? On an ereader alone or physical book? How about those who are visually impaired? You don’t necessarily have to make your book available in every single format the first day it is published. You can consider adding more formats as part of your marketing activities. Hopefully by this time, you would have had a number of reviews to help boost things The Segilola Salami show is hosted by Segilola Salami who is also an author and a self publishing strategist. The Segilola Salami Show – How to grow organically on social media and more | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:46

How to grow organically on social media and more Today on the show, we discuss how an author can grow his fan base on social media organically without having to pay for it. We also review a book by Jason Klamm. To summarise, here’s what was said on the show Firstly, go to where your target audience is. I cannot stress how important Goodreads is. I know I talk about Goodreads a lot but I have to put a disclaimer here. I do not work for Goodreads, I do not get paid for talking about them. In my journey as an author, I have found Goodreads to be more helpful than not. It is the social media for book lovers. Everyone on there likes books. Once you have an account on Goodreads, join groups. Be social, build connections then ask those connections to connect with you on your other platforms. Be willing to do more than you hope to receive. If you want your content shared, share a lot of other people’s contents. Offer to review other author’s books, post the reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and link your Goodreads review to your twitter account, so all reviews get posted to your profile automatically. Then share that twitter update with the author by adding their twitter handle. That’s all part of sowing good karma. And surprise, surprise, you will have people retweeting you that you don’t even know. Add everyone of them and you will see that some of them will add you back. As a newbie author, I know this is time consuming but it is a new journey and I think you should enjoy every step of it. If you are not willing to invest in yourself, how do you then expect others to invest in you?
