Melonie followed a windy road to truth and Jesus, but today she is so grateful she walked it. Disenchanted with certain aspects of the religion of her whole life, Melonie wanted, more than anything else, a close and personal relationship with Jesus. When she was excommunicated from the Mormon Church - despite her testimony of Jesus, Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon, she found new freedom to explore truth and a closeness to Jesus she had always longed for. She learned of Jesus and his grace through worship music which God used to help heal her heart. Within a couple of years she was married in the temple, faithfully engaged in various callings, and starting a large family. Teresa continues her story of what it took to break free from the cycle of abuse she experienced inside her performance-based religion of Mormonism. It's a heavy and at times heart-breaking episode, yet filled with encouragement as she relates how her relationship with Jesus has brought freedom, healing and joy because she is a beloved daughter of God. Her's is a story of a lot of brokenness and bad choices, but ultimately God was working through her circumstances to bring both her and her husband back to Himself. Teresa's Mormon ancestry predates Brigham Young, and like so many we've interviewed who have grown up in performance-based religion, her LDS past is laced with shame and emotional and sexual abuse. In this episode, Teresa draws on both her personal experience and professional expertise to expose the cycle of abuse and explain why it is so easily and frequently perpetuated.  This is a tough episode but a necessary one, for without understanding and awareness it will be difficult to find freedom and healing from abuse. Our hope is that through Teresa's story, many will, like her, be able to find and experience a grace that heals.
