Killafornia Dreaming

On December 2, 2016, an artist collective in Oakland, California known as the Ghost Ship, erupted into flames while a musical event was taking place on the makeshift second floor of the eclectic warehouse. 36 people lost their lives that night in what became one of the worst fire disasters in California history. Hear the story of what happened, how this happened, who is responsible, and a little bit about each person who went to the Ghost Ship that evening for a night of music and never made it out.

In the vein of this weeks episode on the sexual assault of Emily Doe in episode 62, for today’s bonus we are going to touch on a couple other very serious violent sexual predators that have been making news in the past several months, even in the past few days. We are going to talk a little bit about the Nor Cal Rapist, the Golden State Killer, and convicted rapist and predator Bill Cosby.

On January 18th, 2015, a young woman known only by the name Emily Doe attended a frat party at the Stanford University Campus with her younger sister. She would wake up hours later on a hospital gurney with no recollection of how she ended up there or why. Hospital staff and detectives informed her that she had been sexually assaulted, but she was certain they must’ve had her confused with someone else. When Emily made her way to the restroom, and went to pull down the hospital issued sweatpants she was wearing, she discovered her underwear was missing. It was then she knew something terrible had indeed happened to her. This episode is going to be a departure from our usual episode styles. On October 4th, 2002, Gwen Araujo, a teenager from Newark, California, was savagely beaten to death by 4 men when they discovered she was transgender. On April 8th, 2009, rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart of the Anaheim Angels made his season debut, and his 4th professional start for the team against the Oakland A’s.  He would finish the game, throwing the best game of his short career.  But this would be the last time he would ever be on the pitcher’s mound.  Following his stellar performance, he went out dancing with three friends - Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson, and Jon Wilhite.  After leaving the club shortly after midnight, their vehicle collided with a drunk driver who blew threw a red light just a block away from the club…listen now to find out what happened to these young people whose lives tragically intersected that fateful night.
