This week a guest host, Monica, talks about her experiences as a medical student who struggles with mental health and gives a wider perspective on physician burnout. This is a worthwhile episode for both medical students and pre-medical students, actually, this is an important episode for everyone to listen to.
The team is back to reflect on their week. They lightly touch on the exam, just kidding, they only talk about the exam. So if you want to hear medical student cycle between hope and despair (we had not gotten our scores back yet) this is the episode for you!
It’s about time we talked about management, err, time management. Chris brings in some new and familiar voices to talk about how they structure their week and how they try to complete the mountain of stuff required for medical school. They also talk about where they like to study and whether or not they can study at home.
The crew is back together to talk about their 4th week in medical school. They talk about the pressure as their first exam approaches and what they are doing to prepare for it. For the first time they get to see their anatomy lab and also reflect on their first time with the standardized patients.
In between undergraduate and medical school many students will take a gap year/years. In this episode some students talk about their experience with gap years either as resume builders or for self-improvement. They also talk about what it was like applying to medical school right after undergraduate and what they did to improve their application the second time around.
Some new voices bring a new perspective to reflect on the 3rd week of medical school. There is some joy about the slower pace of the beginning of the week followed by a soul crushing amount of material on Thursday. A new water analogy graces the podcast which, thank goodness, has nothing to do with a firehose.
For the second Topic Triage Chris brings in some first year med students to talk about their interview process. They talk about their experience in the day long Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and how they prepared, or didn’t prepare. They also talk about the struggles of interview travels in and out of the state.
The crew from episode 1 return to talk about their experiences during the second week of medical school. They reflect on the significantly increased workload, talk about their excitement for standardized patient experiences, and mention their change in study strategies.
Chris brings in some M1’s to talk about applying to medical school. They cover the importance, or unimportance, of the personal statement and what they decided to include in theirs. The absolutely insane cost associated with applying to schools and the equally insane amount of information required for the primary application. They end by answering some questions submitted on the student doctor network.
For the first ever episode of the MD Odyssey Chris and the team begin by comparing med school to law school. They talk about the joy of the white coat ceremony and the premature death of the MCAT subreddit. They compare their study methods, shout out to Firecracker, and discuss how they are tackling the workload of medical school. They end by talking about their favorite part from the first week of medical school and how much fun it is to be surrounded by a group of people who all have the same goal.
